In this video, I attempt to repair a special edition COD III fat PS4 that is behaving very strangely and usually does not turn on at all.

What’s great about your vids is, you bring it to an end, even if you can’t fix it. That’s how you learn to find out this stuff.

Great work. I enjoy your videos and the good way you diagnose your boards. There are a lot of youtubers who are only able to look for short circuits and when they don't find they just replace common 'things'. I have seen Flux or other liquid risidue unterneath the christal oscillator can cause it for not oscillating.

The flux under the crystal has bitten me several times before. It was only in the last year or so that I realized what was happening after South Bridge replacements.

Crazy you had to post this video right now... I've been fighting with a slim unit that does just what you saw on the first start-up. Goes all the way to 100%, and shuts down during installation. NOR chip had the same "corruption", I had already tried to fix it like you did, nothing.. I had replaced the oscillator, still the same. Replaced SB, nothing. My unit (almost) always starts up, but I only get to that 100% during update, but always just shuts down... Now I saw this video and makes me wonder about the oscillator (again). I guess i'll try yo replace it (again), and this time with those caps included. You just gave me some hope in this battle I already thought lost! Thanks, keep those videos coming!!

The slims seem to act differently from the fats when that oscillator is missing. Don't forget to check the battery too!
@t3k2

@@ToltecMerc sure, don't even think I did not try a different battery before diving into replacing SB ;-) My kit is missing an oscilloscope however, would help to visualize that clock... There are some RTC related errors on UART output though, which initially got me into trying all clock related stuff. I'll update here once I get back to it, could be days. I do this as a hobby like you, so good there is no-one breathing in my back waiting.

@@ToltecMerc like said I would update on my slim, but too sad it is still a failure... I swapped the oscillator and this time both caps, leaving the area clean from flux and residue, but the unit keeps behaving the same. Funny enough, while measuring for the 3V battery bus close to SB, I noticed that the diode connecting 3v3 bus with it was bad (causing draining of 3V batt towards 3v3)... I was like hell, it must be this then, but still no; now the 3V batt voltage maintains ok, but it did not fix the issue... I did a bunch of other stuff too, bricked the NOR once in the process, etc, no good. It's just like the unit does not know how to reboot; trying the "reboot" option in safe mode does shutdown too (like 10sec white light + shutdown)... I think I'll just park this one until I get my hands on another working board of exact same model... Or just scrap for parts

A common problem with flat battery, can cause NOR corruption , in my past experience replacing the corrupt data works provided it is same os version, good job
@ToltecMerc

I see in some videos you measure smd components (resistors, caps) in circuit, how accurate is this, I wanted to do this to salvage smd components from donor boards but some people say this doesn’t work
@ToltecMerc
@ToltecMerc 5 ай бұрын
It really is impossible to get accurate readings in circuit. If I test in circuit, I'm usually looking for a shorted capacitor or a completely open resistor. You won't get accurate resistance readings but if you have the same circuit repeating (like around RAM ICs) you should get similar readings across them. Sometime you are just looking for something that is way out from the normal.

After this video I searched for NOR corruption in ps4 and it seems a common issue. 🙄 When you look at the warnings, how do you know from which offset to which you need to replace with a donor nor?
@ToltecMerc
@ToltecMerc Жыл бұрын
The NOR Validator will tell you the offset in the summary. In this case, it started at 0x1CA000. It wasn't a lot of bytes. Maybe a 100 or so that I had to copy.

I have a PS4 pro that I replaced the southbridge on works now but will not keep time and date. I replaced the cr2032 but that didn't solve it, time still resets every time I turn on the console. Could my problem be the 32k crystal, perhaps flux under it? Can I test it with a multimeter?

Have you connected to the internet and let the system update the time automatically? I think Sony did something in the later firmware to prevent the time from being remembered unless you let the system update from their servers first.

I run into this one about half of the systems I run into. It’s usually systems that I’ve recovered to 9.00 but I’ve also seen it with updated systems. The unit need to be updated to set via online. Sometimes that seems to make it hold. Even when unplugged. I’ve seen it with a factory SB, swapped it. Still won’t hold time. I’ve been looking for this answer for a while now. But I know it’s not the SB

@@ToltecMerc Yes I should have mentioned that, I did update the firmware to 10.01 and I connected to PSN. Sometimes it won't let me even sync the time via the internet, it gives me an error when I try. Very frustrating as everything else is working perfectly.

@@albertdavis1882 My ps4 was on 9.00 and I updated to 10.01 (don't want to jailbreak this one) and connected to PSN, even played online games, still looses time. Even in rest mode it looses time when I wake it back up. I can't find anything online about anyone having this problem which is strange.
