I don't think there are many counterweight reviews out there and this one is really good and insightful considering the different counterweights from different companies and very detailed, really helpful!

Thanks for the quality content, Josh! I'm really looking for a counterweight that won't be so brutal. I'm glad to hear the chainmail one won't damage the yoyo, but they seem to be hard to find. Any advice on where to get one?

Why does the counterweight fly around so fast I think its going to splinter the bones in my thumb,fingers, and wrist ?? I'm looking for a small rubber ball or something from Lowe's .. I can do 360, double trapeze, . "switch hands trapeze" ? I know a lot of 1A tricks. The Duncan counterweight I got free from YoYoSam in May is Brutal. I just started 5A like 3 weeks ago .. I cant justify hurting myself like that to learn a YoYo trick. That's why quit skateboarding a few years ago hurting yourself to have fun when your in your 40s makes way less sense .. That's why I took up YoYo .

I got a 10 cent Jacks Ball and ran a knife around it ... WORKS GREAT !! I think you can do more tricks with it because it will bounce of the YoYo.

I just started getting into 5A, and am mostly just using a 3D printed one I found on thingiverse. I DEFINITELY learned early on to no use one with a lot of edges...

Interesting insight about bearing counterweights - I was wondering if they really did anything, since it's like you said - the counterweight is free to spin when it's released, anyways, and the bearingized counterweights have barely any advantage over regular counterweights when you're holding onto them, since your hands will be touching the string and not allowing a ton of tension to go through very easily anyways.

$12 and up for a counterweight is too much .
