5DEV just released these cranks and they look incredible. 5DEV is the MTB component branch of 5th Axis, a machine shop that makes parts for the aerospace, medical, and space industries. So making MTB products is child's play to them. A rider-owned company, 5 DEV is hitting the industry hard with beautiful cranks, pedals, and stems, and this is just the start of it.

Wow nice looking cranks… I just checked out their website and unfortunately a little too much for my pocket book (can’t justify the price strictly being a hobbyist… and with other competing interest). But I was an “industrial electrician” manufacturing production line equipment for 22 years (mostly stainless steel construction of course) and worked with some great machinist (we had our own machine shop running 3 shifts at times) and can more than appreciate the craftsmanship and quality that goes into something like this :).

Not forged is a no-no on high-end cranks. Isn't this what killed Kooka? The industry realized letting design school grads go wild with CAD drawings and CNC machining wasn't necessarily a good idea! Time will tell with these.

My MTB was in the shop when this video first came out and I thought that after 3 years and over 2000 miles I had worn out one of those Wheels Mfg bottom brackets out but NO. It is still going strong. The issue wasn't the bearings and I've put at least 100 miles on the bike since then so I can personally attest that they are well worth the money.

You made reference to Raceface having the same length of arm and just moving the pedal threads for different crank lengths - don't know if you meant just for 165 vs. 170. I just picked up 170mm Turbines to replace my 175's and the crank arm length is definitely shorter on the 170's. I don't know what they do for any of their other cranksets.
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 2 жыл бұрын
Most 165 and 170mm race face cranks have the same arm length, they just drill the hole in a different spot. Some companies' 170s and 175s share the same length and they just move the hole.
@2scoops624
@2scoops624 2 жыл бұрын
I just replaced my stock 175mm race face affect cranks with the same ones in 165 and they definitely did not just drill the hole lower, the crank arm is shorter. Can't say the same for box components square taper, they drill the hole lower.
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 2 жыл бұрын
@@2scoops624 I've got two pair of race face cranks where they drilled the holes shorter and left the arms longer. I believe they're both 170s. On their higher and carbon cranks i wouldn't expect to see this.

The biggest issue I see is that these cranks with that have 30mm spindles. True they feel a bit stiffer, this was radically noticeable when I first used my Hope EVO cranks replacing my RF Next SL cranks. I think part of that was aluminum is just stiffer. With that said, the price of the bigger spindle is your BB bearings are smaller and they won’t last as much as BB’s with 24mm spindle crank sets. Perhaps if you have a T47 BB this wouldn’t be the case, but most of us have the smaller standard BB shells on our frames. The reason I’m bringing this up is because I go through BB’s like crazy on my single speed Mtn bikes. I definitely ride a lot and my trails are a hard loaded,mash cranking, out of the saddle climb to get to my descents. It’s dry where I ride but just a lot of torque applied constantly to my cranks and BB’s. I have learned a few tricks to get some extra life out of my BB’s and have used most of the best BB’s available.
@5DEV
@5DEV 2 жыл бұрын
We can machine any size spindle. We just haven't made a 24mm yet. It will probably come in time if we see the demand. Right now most are opting for 29 (sram) or 30.
@hardmtnbiker
@hardmtnbiker 2 жыл бұрын
@@5DEV yep, I believe all of the newer model cranks are 30mm spindles and in most applications the BB bearings are not an issue. But for me being a SS Mtn biker going years as only riding SS, I have had to deal with the short lifespan of my several brands of BB’s but short of the super expensive ceramic CK or new CC Hellbender 110. The ones that I have been using recently are those Wheels Manufacturing ac bearings, the White Indy ac bearings and the Hope BB. I definitely ride a lot and have 2 SS and one geared HT and my gravel. My geared bikes really are not an issue with 30mm spindles. Just my SS Mtn bikes.
