[5K] How a train gets delayed & spotters: Enschede - Amersfoort CABVIEW HOLLAND ICM 6jun 2021

In the series "How trains get delayed" (see playlist), I use practical examples to show why trains are sometimes delayed. During this ride we come to a stop in front of Almelo de Riet behind a malfunctioning modern train. Drawing from my own experience, it must be another piece of software that has crashed, which means the train has to be restarted. What do you think of the modern software-driven technology where we massively accept that it just needs to be rebooted regularly? I'd love to hear what you think about that! The departure of the Cabview Holland Express is filmed from Enschede (1:05) by Cabview Holland VIP Treinen in Twente & Surroundings. At Hengelo (11:55) allround VIP Damian is ready to film the departure and at Apeldoorn (1:08:58) CVH Spotter VIP Emir makes another beautiful recording. We make an extra stop at Kennispark. Somewhere along the way you see a deer crossing the road. Very bad to see, I'm curious if you spot it.. Have fun watching!
In de serie "Zo ontstaat vertraging" (zie playlist) laat ik met voorbeelden uit de praktijk zien waarom treinen wel eens vertraging oplopen. Tijdens deze rit komen we voor Almelo de Riet tot stilstand achter een defecte moderne trein. Puttend uit mijn eigen ervaring zal het wel weer een stukje vastgelopen software zijn waardoor de trein opnieuw opgestart moet worden. Wat vinden jullie van de moderne softwaregestuurde technologie waarbij we massaal accepteren dat het nou eenmaal regelmatig opnieuw opgestart moet worden? Ik hoor heel graag hoe jij daarover denkt! Het vertrek van de Cabview Holland Express wordt op Enschede (1:05) gefilmd door Cabview Holland VIP Treinen in Twente & Omgeving. Op Hengelo (11:55) staat algeheel VIP Damian klaar om het vertrek te filmen en op Apeldoorn (1:08:58) maakt CVH-VIP Emir weer een mooie opname. We maken een extra stop op Kennispark. Mooie heldere video. Wat ik van moderne treinen vind? Net als met auto's, alles moet TE electronisch tegenwoordig. Nergens voor nodig. Waarom is de 1200-serie meer dan 50 jaar in dienst gebleven? Waarom zijn de Plan-V stellen veel langer in dienst gebleven dan gepland en later zelfs weer opnieuw ingezet? Waarom is de 1600-serie moeilijk uit dienst te stellen? En waarom rijden de ICM en SGM nog steeds in dienst alsof ze net nieuw zijn? Ik vind het verschrikkelijk dat alles softwaregestuurd moet. Ja de mogelijkheden zijn prachtig maar het is simpelweg veel te storingsgevoelig. Ik ben van mening dat de besturing altijd mechanisch moet blijven. Electronica mag helpen, maar mag niet de baas zijn!

Same here in our big city of Auckland New Zealand. May has been a slow trip but what a great train trip it was for us train spotters

At least there's a legitimate reason for trains unexpectedly stopping in the Netherlands. In South Africa trains stop due to lack of maintenance and malfunctioning signals, this is caused from corruption and lack of funds.

Thanks for another great ride. Saw some different stations for me on this trip. That bug in the centre of your windscreen was not gonna budge no matter how hard you tried. I did think it might have just moved slightly towards the end. I am amazed at differences in daylight from the different seasons. This was obviously your Summer or Spring. Great work, thanks again from Australia.

Leuk, al die software, sensors en alles wat een moderne trein gebruikt, maar 1 bug en je kan alles opnieuw opstarten. Je zal maar een belangrijke afspraak hebben op zo'n moment. Mooi weer meester!

It's major issues like software crashes and such that make us appreciate older technology rather than dislike it because it may be slower or less "appealing". In my opinion, newer technology is somewhat unappealing in many ways meanwhile older tech looks cooler. For example in Canada and the rest of North America for this matter has older diesel locomotives that look much cooler and have a much longer useful lifespan meanwhile newer locomotives may be more fuel-efficient and more cost-effective, but they certainly have a whole new suite of problems that have yet to be permanently fixed. What I'm trying to say is that newer tech solves previous problems but presents newer problems that may take a lot of time to fix. The same thing probably happened with older tech and the generation prior to that one. Anyway, awesome video as per usual!

Ik wil zo graag een keer in de boven cabine kijken maar weet niet hoe en of dat mag, ben al een tijdje geïnteresseerd in koplopers geweest, ben vandaag voor de leuk met een ICM mee geweest en geniet er elke keer van!

52:21 Remmen, a.u.b. 52:26 Ik zei gassen, meester! Het is leuk wat er allemaal kan met elektronica, maar dezelfde complexiteit die zij toestaat is ook haar ondergang. Ik vraag me af of er nog een beweging voor bewust simpele elektronica komt, die misschien niet alle mogelijke features heeft maar wel goed te doorgronden is.

36:27 - why was that train stopped? Was it waiting for the track you just left with the other station track occupied by the broken train? Out of curiosity how late did you get and how late were you at Amersfoort? I saw you working to catch up as much as you could. {^_^}

I imagine that it's incredibly frustrating for drivers to have their runs interrupted by software glitches, and having to let said train come to a halt and reboot the computer is an annoyance. I sympathize with our drivers here in Melbourne when it happens, as it almost invariably happens on our system when it's over 35°C and/or in peak hour. The pressure of getting a train restarted quickly when you have hundreds of passengers with no ventilation, let alone air conditioning or heating (depending on the season) must be something else. As a railway man, I liked our older non-air conditioned trains as they operated on a keep it simple basis, and were very reliable right up until their withdrawal.

We've also had lovely glitches with train control running on computers over the last 40 years. Thankfully not causing any accidents, but at least a dozen occasions when the computers have mis-identified regional trains as suburban trains and sent them via the underground loop that circles the city. The problem with that is that all our regional trains are diesel powered, not electric, and the regional operator uses fixed consists on all its trains that must face a certain way, and that means when that happens, the trains arrive at the main regional terminal facing the wrong way. This is even more of a problem now, as redevelopment has seen a former balloon track not far from the regional terminal torn up, so fixing that error would require either a raft of paperwork and waivers for the train to be permitted to traverse the underground again, or running the train empty for roughly 250km around a triangular route to get it facing the right way again. In 1711, an American poet wrote "To err is human, to forgive, divine." That's now been re-written as: "To err is human, but to really bugger things up, you need a computer!!"

Snelheid verlagen en stoppen voor de H. Geldt voor goederentreinen. Om te voorkomen dat de trein op de helling tot stilstand komt - en niet meer weg kan komen.

Nothing is wrong with modern technology, but everything is wrong with how we apply it. The pervasive thinking of it working 99% of the time is disastrous for longterm devices such as these, because the 1% scenarios tend to become more common over time due to the hardware aging. Worse, it is very common to apply cost-effective temporary fixes that are permanent in software. Nobody would accept a train where some bits are kept together by duct tape, right? But at least duct tape is both visible and subject to wear and tear as the rest of the train is, so it eventually gets replaced. But temporary fixes in software never get tackled perfectly, because hey, it is working! But the application of layers of digital duct tape is what makes these systems a nightmare in the long term. Specific fixes for specific customers or devices add yet another layer of mayhem. If development and maintenance of digital systems received the amount of critical attention and longterm love that the trains themselves do, they would be a lot more reliable. Alas, software is invisible, so why spend on it when it works most of the time? These issues are essentially the same things as using the cheapest suppliers for physical parts: the quality is simply less, leading to more wear, tear and replacements.
