I really like the factory TRD skid plate for the 5th gen 4Runner. Here's an install and video review. Super easy to install.
*This skid plate will not work with the 4Runner's equipped with KDSS.

You need to clean the rear bolt holes from dirt, rust and grime that makes the bolt feel too tight. Other DIY videos show a gun barrel bore with oil to do the trick. nice video though, I like the way you explained the KDSS. Thank you

I have KDSS and what I did was cut the skid plate to clear the sway bars. I used the old skid plate as a template.

I have one with the KDSS as well, and was wondering how easy/difficult it would be to just cut away the interfering section of the skid plate/KDSS. Especially since the skidplate is just aluminum, shouldn't be too difficult.

Put mine on and it saved me some damage. Hit a bucket at 80mph and it destroyed said bucket, little mark & no damage underneath. Must have!

Hi great vid! Thanks! What is the black metal hardware on the unfinished side of the skidplate on the rear side, attached with allen bolts? Important?

Thank you very much! Those Allen bolts are support structures on the engine side of the skid plate.

The skid plate will fit but you have to be able to cut/trim the skid plate to fit the KDSS. I have a 2022 TRD ORP and I’m running the TRD Pro skid plate

Thanks for watching the video. This skid plate was actually for my friends 4Runner and I was actually thinking about cutting the plate. It would’ve worked but he didn’t want to do it. This skid plate is perfect for non kdss 4Runners.

Do you still take it to toyota for oil changes if so do they give you a hard time about it ? Im wondering for cost and other reasons

Thank you for watching the video. Yes I take the 4Runner to the dealer for oil changes and yes I had the same concerns. I forgot what the cost is and they didn’t bat an eye about the skid plate. Regardless they have to remove the skid plate to change the oil.

The rear bolt holes needed to cleaned out with a wire brush and the new bolt will screw in with no issues.

So the 22ft lbs is for all four bolts? The two in front with spacers and the two back ones?

It's easier if you do the front bolts first as you can use the spacers to align. After the front two are started, the real bolts are perfectly aligned. Also, like another posted suggested, just clean the back holes with a bore cleaner. They work just fine.

Thanks for watching. The original is part plastic and steel. This TRD skid plate provides full coverage… Who am I kidding… I put it on because it looks Saweet. 🤣 This is my wife’s 4Runner and she wanted to personalize her vehicle.

Is it just me or is it weird that the stock cover you originally had covered way more. There seems to be too much frontal exposure where the radiator is after installing the trd skid plate. Can that plastic cover go back on?

Thanks for watching the video. I went out and looked at the TRD skid plate… yes, there’s about a 4” gap between the skid plate and the front bumper. I’m going to see if there’s a way to install that OEM plastic plate. Maybe a future video if it works out. 🤷🏻‍♂️

After an year with TRD plate, I am going back to the stock plate. It keeps the engine bay cleaner. It does not expose the bottom so much. That TRD is just a show off thing, as you said "Gucci". I will try cut a hole, just under the oil filter, same like the oil drain plug, so I dont have to remove the plate every oil change.

@@LXPlore , some after market copies of the TRD plate have a small cutting with a removable cover, for the oil filter access.

@@axios76 I’m sure somebody has built a better mouse trap. Gotta love aftermarket companies… so much ingenuity and creativity. This is the wife’s 4Runner and she’s good with the TRD skid plate.

Can you reuse the bolts from the stock skid plate? I bought a used TRD skid plate but didn't come with hardware.

@@volt6008 yes, either have another person help hold it into place, or use a jack, or do what I did and use a knee. Just need to get the threads started. It’ll hold while you install the remaining bolts.

@@LXPlore nice, I actually work at Toyota quickLube. And my “experienced” goofball partner never gave me heads up…. About this skid plate because I know the other usually have a hook that it hangs on.
