We love using Language Lessons For Today (plus separate spelling at my child’s pace); but I appreciate this thorough review as a younger sibling might thrive with a different option. 🙂

Thank you for sharing! If course we're only halfway through PreK or maybe 2/3s through. But we LOVE My Father's World. They really do have everything included and so great for multiple kids. I know they make math and LA a little separate to the rest of their program from grade 2 onwards but we love how it's so neat and gentle and easy to use. ❤ let us know which curriculum you end up choosing for the new year 😊

We are struggling with spelling but if a curriculum doesn’t have it makes it easier for us to use it for the rest of language arts!!! We love using book studies and discussions!!!

I have both of these as well I am considering for my 4th grader. I decided not to go with LLATL (although I still love it) because I will be doing separate novel studies on books of our interest. This will be my first year homeschooling and after watching your video, I think my daughter can do 5th grade level (LLFT) since she is pretty good in grammar and 4th book seems like a review. Would you say they are lined up pretty well for the levels indicated? I don't want it to be too hard, but then again I don't want level 4 to be too gentle. Also, would you be doing something separate for writing with LLFT or do you think this is enough?

Ho early it’s hard to say because it really depends on her like/dislike of writing and what type of curriculum she’s coming from. For instance, my daughter tested for first grade math in master books but kinder math in TGTB because TGTB is a bit more challenging. My Fathers world reminds me a lot of Master Books in its approach so if she’s coming from a more rigorous curriculum I don’t see why she couldn’t jump to level 5 but I would personally go into it knowing there might need to be a change just so if there is one you can stay flexible and not overwhelm either of you since it’s your first year. I just checked on their site and I’m not even finding an assessment to link here. I just left our homeschool convention and listened to multiple classes from Andrew Pudewa (the creator of IEW) and after hearing all he said I probably would not add in a writing supplement but maybe a spelling/vocabulary curriculum and really good read alouds to read during the year. Especially if you’re adding in novel studies anyway. I think that will be more than enough. At least for my son since he dislikes this subject.

I was actually looking into some IEW curriculum (fix it, structure & style, and all things fun & fascinating)so I'm a little familiar with Pudewa -- but glad to know that!! I will likely start at her level since it is new to us and go from there. She enjoys to write, I just wanted to be sure there was "enough" writing (it might be because I'm comparing it to some other programs that specifically outline types of writing like expository and persuasive). Thanks again so much!

We used the LLATL Purple book for my sons 5th grade year. From our personal experience, it was actually maybe too easy and gentle and he is average when it comes to language arts. I also have to say the lessons were actually very short. Maybe 15-20 minutes max unless where was a writing project or some research 🤔 Again, that was our experience but thought it may be helpful to some.

Ohhhh really?! I hope that’s our same experience! My son would love 20 minutes! Some of it looked a bit long so I just guesstimated. I wish they included that in their parent portion
