The 65ksi max pressure is the key. That’s magnum territory. I would consider a .30-06 instead of .270 but they push a 150 grain bullet about the same speed with the same powder load and case length, and the .270 bullet is a lot sleeker.

The 280 Remington is actually a better performer but it had the already established 270 to contend with .

6.5 prc is almost identical to the 270. 6.8 western and 7mm prc have better ballistics then both

I hunt Elk and mule deer in utah I own only one High Powered Rifle a Remington 700 ADL its a 270 winchester I bought the rifle over 20 years ago when I got home from basic training earlier that week I looked at that exact rifle in 30-06 when I went to buy it they had sold it! I was really bummed out the sales manager ask me if I had ever considered the 270 Winchester to hunt with after a talk and looking at a ballistic chart I bought it and 2 boxes of cartridges and it's been a absolutely great weapon and cartridge I have learned to love it over the years I have only ever required one shot on all my mule deer and Elk that I have killed never second round it's preformed very well for me in hunting big game!

Yep, I own a Winchester in 30-06 like your .270. I guess I got yours. But about 30 years ago I bought a Remington auto-loader in .270 caliber. One of my friends that I was in a hunting club with offered to sell it for $200. I snatched it up before anybody else could. That rifle is a for sure do it all kind of rifle. It's more like a magnum round than anything else without being called a magnum. That was the best $200 I ever spent on any firearm.

I'm with you there. I inherited my dad's 73 Remington 700 several years back. I've taken white tail deer, mule deer and pronghorn and never had one go more than a few yards with one well placed shot. I believe I'll stick with it for awhile.

A .270 savage is all my dad has ever owned and he has killed just about everything with it, elk included. All 1 shot kills.

I bought my new Remington 700 BDL in 270 win almost fifty years ago. I have shot many mule deer with it and done a lot of varmint hunting too. I love that rifle and caliber so much that I recently bought a Tikka T3 X in 270 win. That cartridge has proven it’s self time and time again since 1925.

Interesting and well presented conversation and stats. I’ve shot .308, .30-06, 6.5, 7 mag and .270 calibers for big game. My .270 with.130 grain is one shot kills on deer and smaller critters. In 150 grain, it’s one shot kills on elk and moose. I’m sure caribou and a lot of African animals (never been to Africa) would succumb to my .270 as well. My favorite bullet is the Nosler Premium boat tail in both grain weights in my rifle. I’ve shot in 20 below up to 90 degrees F with no change in performance. Most kills were less than 350 yards. My .270 is a rifle I can trust when in the field.

I bought a Winchester Model 70 .270 in 1975. Its light, shoots flat and fast and packs a wallop. With a bench, it keyholes the previous round on the paper mostly. I met a guy with a 6.5 bolt action at a range in Houston a few years back. He thought he'd discovered gold or something. Silly. I didn't bother to show him MY gold. My1976 Smith Trophy 14k gold medal , USMC, Pacific.

I noticed during the ammunition shortage the most available bullets were the 3006 and the 270 that in its self makes those two look really good to me.

Unfortunately for me as a 30-06 and .270 owner, I am just now seeing 30-06 readily available again. The popular rounds were hard to find in my area.

.270 has been my choice for years! The 6.5 excites me because of the hype but it’s hard to beat my comfort level with the .270!

if you ask my shoulder which comfort level it would prefer, it definitely would say the creed. But that's because I have bolts & screws in it from falling out of a tree-stand. I do like the 270, but

I'm all in with you on that. I've had the 6.5 and it's a nice round to play with BUT, I never shelled out for the Dies to Re-Load them. My Best Buddy really wanted my 6.5 so let him buy it about 20yrs ago before all the regulations kicked in. While I still like the 6.5 I'll stay with my 270 and 270WSM because it's what I trust will get Meat on my table with total confidence. I guess the confidence level has a lot to do with anything in life.

My dad used the 270 for hunting when growing up and throughout his life. Got everything from rabbits to elk. I recall several pronghorn shots well out to 4-500 yards and dropped them where they stood. Flat shooting with lots of energy and versatile. Can't go wrong.

@@huntermcnabb2791 I agree with your query! WHY use a .270 on a rabbit? What's next? Ground squirrels? LOL That's one damned expensive kill, LOL and likely a decent portion of meat ruined. The best rabbit round, even at distance is easily argued to be a .22WMR. FAST, light, cheap, and great energy on small stuff, and varmints.

Maybe the @PeterPounder moniker references Peter Rabbit and maybe he’s Australian so rabbit meat is not the point. 270 would render burial of the bunny bodies rather needless I’d say. Tough to gather the fur tufts as they blow around. 😂

During the ammo drought(s), 270 seemed to be the only thing still on the shelf, and in multiple grain weights, often as not.

Years ago when I was a kid I remember reading articles written by Jack O'Conner in the popular hunting magazines where he praised the virtues of the 270. He loved that cartridge and used it for everything.

.270 150’s has killed every big game I have gotten, elk and deer. The recoil is non existent when I’m hunting, as I’m not shooting 100’s of rounds.

Me, too. I subscribed to Outdoor Life magazine in the late 40's, as a young sprout. My first (and only, for 50+ years) big game rifle was a Savage 110 L in .270. Took well over 100 antelope, dozens of deer and elk, and who knows how many jack rabbits. Then.......got to old and wimpy for the winds in my Wyoming home and moved to the Ozarks. Only thing I saw through the old 4X Tasco scope was a green blur. So switched to an open site 94 in 30/30 (another O'Connor favorite) and have happily kept the freezer stocked since (cataract surgery helped with the switch). And, this bony, 83 yr old shoulder can't take even the downloaded 270 rounds anymore......so grandson in Nebraska is LOVING it.

I’m 38 my father raised me on ole’ jacks understanding of the 270.. I have both rounds, but when it comes with hunting in North America I grab my 270. Everytime

My dad gave me one of the early Ruger M77 round tops with the tang safety in .270 Win 22" barrel 1:10 twist. It's taken several whitetale, elk, black bear, antelope, and this fall I touched down my 1st moose with it. I'd handloaded a 160gr Nosler Partition to 2830 fps average and quartering away at 120 yards I put one thru his boiler breaking two ribs on entry, heart and double lung, and another rib far side stopping in the armpit. He started to run but only made it 10 yards before I fed another round thru his top vertebrae and thru the back of his head dropping him instantly. I couldn't have been happier with my .270.

I grew up with the 270, and being 74 years old I find I can still shoot it pretty good. I know what’s going to happen when I pull the trigger, no surprises . For me it’s up to the individual.

I killed an oryx 1 1/2 weeks ago with my 260 Rem. 310 yards, right through the front shoulder. It liquefied both lungs. She maybe made it 50 yds and fell over dead. Shot placement indeed.

As the military is about to replace several .308 and .223 rifles with 6.5 creedmore for certain applications (long range, low recoil, high rate of fire) The 6.5 will quickly become very saturated on the market. I've never had trouble finding 6.5 and it's cheaper than .270 ammo also.

@@ChadRazorback Id change that to 6.8 for the new military cartridge. 6.5 was tested and used in a few specialty guns but the new cartridge will replace the 6.5.

Great video. A friend of mine had and has had, a lot of animosity towards the 6.5 CR. He is a die hard, everything has to be a .308. He went out and got a Savage Axis II FDE 6.5 CR after I showed him this video. I personally have the same platform and absolutely love it. My freezer is full because of it.

257 Roberts ,same caliber ,medium action,ballistics almost the same ,reloading life better,i have seen both in action Thar and elk hunting in new Zealand , both good but i would buy a Roberts if i was buying ,i use a 222 or a 270 for deer hunting , cheers cressie

Love my 25-06. Deer killing machine. Have a TON of other options available and if it HAS to get done I always grab it. I DO realize though particularly for larger projectiles it is not as good as the 6.5 as they usually have 1 in 10” twist vs 1 in 8” for the 6.5...

@@bryancresswell1632 Had both a 25-06 and a 257 Roberts, both deadly accurate at any reasonable hunting ranges, though the -06 had a bit more reach. Sold both to friends that wanted them more than I did at the time. Wish I still had both.

At one time the .270 was the new kid on the block getting all the hype, it was the 6.5 creedmoor of its day. Both are very good cartridges. I have noticed that the 6.5 has a very large assortment of factory loadings that may be why a lot of people like it also.

I have both....I tend to gravitate towards the 270 but the 6.5 gets it done with the right bullets. The 270 have a higher terminal ballistic in my opinion. I always believe in bringing enough gun and that allows for farther ethical shots for bullet penetration. You can hunt elk with both but I’m much more confident with my 270 within 400 yards max...great video Ron! 😃👍🏻

The extra 300 fps velocity really helps. Until you get way past 400 yards the higher BC of the 6.5 doesn't overcome the difference in velocity.

I still prefer my 300 win mag over both. Loads can be custom with a huge range of bullet weights for specific application and velocities are never in question even out to 600 yards. 300 win mag hits hard (terminal) with excellent velocities and energy to confidently take even large game. Kick is a problem for some people but practice can easily fix that. Still love my 270 😃👍🏻 not hating a bit on either cartridge. Great conversation. 😉

@@HikeHuntHaul I used to be you. Only have a 7MM Magnum for the gun and not the caliber. You will never be able to shoot a .300 Magnum as well as a .243. Just a fact.

@@zorro456 it’s debatable....a heavier barrel fixes a lot of problems that shooters can develop; a better trigger fixes shooting problems too but “to each their own” 😃👍🏻. What works for one person might not for another. That’s what makes the shooting world such a fun and engaging conversation.

Interesting note: Look at the first paper on Drop/Drift/Energy. He looks to purposely make the creedmore look better. He compares the heaviest 270 to the lightest 6.5. Then at the bottom of the page compares the lightest 270 to the heavist 6.5. If you compare the heaviest of both you find the 270 beats the 6.5 in every category. If you compare the lightest bullets against each other the 270 only loses in wind drift and not by much (4in @ 900 yards). The 270 wins hands down!

@@danielsteiner7634 stop throwing around accusations. In the first one he‘s comparing similar weight bullets, which is one point of comparison. You could obviously argue that that’s not "fair“ because the .270 has a larger diameter so in the next one he showed a 150gr .270. If you compare the 143gr 6.5 and 150gr .270 (where the .270 still has a lower BC) the difference remains small. Yes, the .270 drops a bit less but not by much.

Exactly. If I was going antelope or mule deer hunting and some handed me a gun chambered in either cartridge, I wouldn’t feel the least bit handicapped.

The .270 is a fine round. The ammo available and price would make it the better choice. If you reload the 6.5 would be good choice. It all depends on your situation.

I agree I've been shooting the 270 for 40 years, killed lots of deer. The longest range around me is 400 yards, only missed by 1/4"

I've got all kinds of rifles but one of favorite for deer is the lowly .243. All my shooting is done inside 200 yards and our whitetails are generally not that big. I actually took one a few years ago with 7.62x39 out of a 16" barreled ak using 154 grain sp. Deer are pretty easy to kill as long as you don't gut shoot them. Most hunters would do better to focus on improving their skills, rather than their equipment.

i really appreciate the depth of Ron's explanation. Bottom line for me: the 6.5 is excellent but for hunters there is no good reason to switch from 6.5x55 7-08 260 rem 257 roberts 7x57 and 270 win etc. Unless you want the latest...

@@IamtheWV17 The 6.5CM is not the front foot. Its a different foot. The benefits of the 6.5CM over other comparable cartridges are only evident at long range - ranges at which the vast majority of people should not be hunting anyway. If you need a long range steel plate hunter, the 6.5CM is a good choice. There are better choices for hunting at 200-400 yds.

@@csjrogerson2377 I'm thinking more about my particular context. Live in Aus, will never use to hunt large game, can load light for tac driving pest control, can load heavier for long range target, will reach out and down a man sized target in SHTF better than .223.

@@IamtheWV17 I can see your point, but if I were doing pest control, I'd use a pest control sized rifle and calibre. Light loading a 6.5CM gets you a very short bullet with a much lower BC and the benefit of long-for-calibre rounds is lost. A man-sized target is medium-sized game and a 223 is adequate for humans to 450 yds (I know, 22 yrs in Brit Armed Forces), but few would use it got medium game past 250 or 300 yds, so it depends on your ballistics for a light loaded 6.5. Personally, I'd get a rifle for pest control, 1 for medium game and keep the 6.5 for tgt shooting.

The 6.5 perfectly splits the difference between the All-American .22 and .30 calibers, with a taste for heavy bullets. Short action. Efficient case. Seems like a very practical cartridge to me. I am really glad this caliber caught on.

@@RiverRat1953 Absolutely, Sweed 6.5 is a great cartridge! Grandfather of the amazing B. C. and accuracy! To long for the AR-10 platform. 6.5 Creed More chambered AR-10, tuned buffer and spring, muzzle break, produces very little recoil, rapid next shots on Coyote, Hogs & varmints.

Loved the opening moment with your beautiful pup! I have a CZ 550 fs in 6.5 Swede and it is a beauty! I've also deer hunted w/my 1912 Carl Gustaf Swedish Mauser. The 6.5x55 is only rated at that pressure because there are a lot of older guns that are chambered for it. It can easily take over 60K in a strong modern action.

GREAT CHANNEL! Gotta love this one, GREAT long range cartridges. Love my Sako finnlight in 270 win, what's nice is they don't beat you up like the magnums, ENJOYABLE long range shooting.I have a 338 win mag, it doesn't hurt but it sure shakes you up.

That Swedish Mauser that I have is definitely one of my favorite cartridges after the .308 and the .270 Win. That Swede is much more accurate than either the 308 or .270 at 300 yards, by at least 1/4" This is the second time I review this video and it is really a good comparison for these bullets. @@virginiascurti5036 That is a perfect example of selecting the right tools for success! The .270 win (long action) and the 7mm08 (short action) are just the 2 calibers I use. Both have very similar felt recoil to me. Both have about the same bullet diameter.Finding the "ideal" bullet weights and amount of powder to shoot the bullets? That is the key to overall success in your particular case. Good luck finding your ideal bullets!I just happen to have found "my" ideal ammo after several years of testing different makers and rounds best suited for my particular hunt and target shooting. Think about in terms of how you went about finding your ideal LOP and caliber. THEN start out shooting lighter loads and bullet weights. Work up your baseline to compare other boxes of ammo in your caliber. Take notes of the pros/cons of each shots after you have established some resemblance of a group. ALWAYS maintain a same routine at each outing to mitigate any variations in your routine. What's the best ammo for you will not be the best ammo for me. I cannot stress this enough! I'm big. Shooting faster/heavier bullets/rounds does not bother me all that much but can become annoying at the very least so what is exactly the best formula for you? That's all on you.

Loved my model 7 7mm-08. It went in smaller than my pinkie and out almost 3 fingers wide. I used a ballistic tip Once. It got ugly. Exploded on the shoulder and a piece went out through all the vitals catching the gut bag by the rear leg. Needless to say I won’t use the ballistic tip again. Too much damage. A soft point 140 does real well though for me.

@@virginiascurti5036 Hi Virginia! Sorry about taking so long to reply. So, The 7mm08 is a Weatherby Vanguard variant. I require a very long LOP so I've removed the factory buttstock and replaced it with a much thicker piece, then added another slip on from limb saver. This works reasonably well for my particulars. The .270 win on the other hand is a recently (10 years ago?) Winchester branded made by FM sometime back. It too has additional buttstock extensions yet, only required me to add another limb saver "slip on" type recoil pad. These 2 bolt actions do all my shooting/hunting chores while also being fun to punch paper with. I hope this clears up any questions you presented here? Good luck Virginia!

My dad had a 264 Winchester magnum and I had a 270 Winchester and my dad could out shoot many people in the area. Was raised in Wyoming and we were always deer, antelope, and elk. We never had any problems with either rifles. We also always reloaded our own rounds. Both rifles are very good rifles and I have no problem whatsoever with them.

Agreed. Every army that's fought it has highly respected the 7x57, if not those shooting it. (Boer war, American Spanish war, various south American wars). Yet it seems to have been forgotten because it was never in the service of one of the major powers in a world war.

Got me a nice 6x6 herd bull with a 6.5 creedmoore this year. 125 yards quartering away. Went thru the last two ribs, thru the liver, nicked one lung, shredded the other and the hide held the bullet from passing thru on the opposite side.

@@edgarlombera7066 6.5CM can get over 1500 ft/lbs energy out to 600 yards and 1500 ft/lbs has been the commonly accepted threshold for Elk for decades. My 375 Cheytac can do it past 2000 yards though.😎

@@hans-juergentroeh9163 More bullets with long track records of superior hunting performance. Several articles I have read from different sources all pointed out that .277 bullets are optimized for hunting, not target shooting. Pleyny of 6.5 bullets are optimized for target shooting. So not sure what bullets were used, but usually, those bullets with the 600+BCs are not hunting bullets. I do not want to cast aspersions on Mr. Spomer as he presents his information well, but I can't help but wonder if we re comparing deer or elk bullets to deer or elk bullets. If so, good to go. If not, the drop and drift numbers for the 6.5 are not going to be as good as with target bullets and loads. I pick my 270 Win loads for terminal ballistics at hunting ranges, not for 1000 yd matches.

My favorite small round is the 270 Weatherby. I use it for everything here in New Mexico and Colorado. Use it in Africa for plains game. It's flat shooting and hammers game. Great show amigo. You have one smart mutt - he's a star.

270 Weatherby is my go to . . . elk to deer to antelope. A relative of mine uses 270 Winchester for moose and swears by it. I imagine a 270 Weatherby would do just fine. 150 Gr nosler is hard to beat.

Thanks for a wonderfully informed history of 6.5 and related calibers. We should always consider intended applications. If the 6.5 is more of a target round that can be used for hunting, that's ok. Hunters needn't disparage 6.5 Creedmoor as a target round and target shooters needn't disparage the 270 as a hunting round. Both can work for either too, even if it's not their primary use.

Yeah, I think it’s important to point out that the bullet is the most important component when determining whether a round should be used for hunting or not. Put a hunting bullet in the 6.5 and the fact that the creedmoor was initially built for target shooting completely irrelevant.

Several years ago 7 to 8yrs. my buddy I deer hunt with brought a German made bolt action .375 H&H magnum with him for whitetail hunting. I have to say it was without a doubt one of the nicest,balanced and comfortable rifles that I've had the privilege to look at.

I just found this channel, and it's really starting to grow on me. I will say, however, on this gentleman's point on recoil, that the felt recoil of a cartridge is a product of the rifle. In the modern-day of technology, you need to address the recoil of a cartridge when you're selecting the rifle. Recoil mitigation in the firearm will make or break your experience with a cartridge. I understand why the numbers are cool to look at, but I don't think people should take those with a grain of salt. When you're shopping for a rifle, test out the ways a rifle will mitigate recoil (butt-pad, stock quality, etc.). I'm going to end up marathoning Ron's videos, so awesome work!!

I've always preffered hunting with 270 winchester. I've shot whitetails with various other calibers, but the 270 just "kills" like no other... And recently, with the newer high BC .277 bullets on the market, it can hold its own with just about anything.

@@5000rgb The issue isn't support for higher BC bullets (Berger 170gr EOL trounces the high BC 6.5s), the issue is safe load data for the higher weight 270 loads AND barrels. Most rifle makers optimized their guns for 90-130gr bullets (though 150gr bullets are still within stabilization range), but the twist rate isn't quite high enough to support the bullets much heavier than 150gr. If you custom barrel your 270 Win for a higher twist, you'll outperform the 6.5 all day...except in recoil, but you can't trick physics.

.30-06 is my fav. I've seen elk one-shotted with a .243. I put one down that had been gut shot with a .300 winmag. It's not the caliber or bullet weight. It's shot placement. I have a 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser and would take it elk hunting if I did not already have a .30-06. This is a good analysis and history lesson. Keep it up.

I watched a video titled bullets and what they do to the human body. Compiled from tons of fbi and police stats, the final verdict was shot placement. They did say that some people have died from non fatal wounds and one took being shot I think 46 times before he has he out

Shot placement is key but I still wouldn’t feel right running a .223 like some guys do for deer. Here in MN that’s the minimum caliber. I starred with 12 gauge, moved to .35 REM, then 30-06, then finally .308. Both the .30 calibers are a little much for deer but they have great stopping power at field ranges and offer a little more wiggle room for shot placement. I went to the .308 so I could run a lightweight AR platform.

@@RARufus .30 cal being "a little much" for deer depends on the size of the deer. You can definitely blow up those little swamp whitetails that they have in FL. Long time use shows .30-.30, .308, .30-06 are all good for large bodied deer. I agree about .223, they are great for wounding an enemy in combat, but if you want to kill use a .30 cal round and make a hole.

Those idiots would do the same thing with a 270, gut shot or something. Berger sells their hybrid round in 153 grain for the 6.5 creed. With that weight it has more energy than 270 150gr after 250 yards and also passes 30-06 178gr eld-x after 400y. Of course under 250 the 270 will kill them harder lol. Imo both are great rounds, the 270 is to the 30-06 like the 6.5c is to the 308. Where creed shines is a 16" ar10 that's maneuverable and is still supersonic to 1100ish yards. Semi auto, 20 round mags and with a suppressor, about same length as a 270 bolt rifle.

6.5X55 was a smokeless cartridge, it was sloped for reliable feeding. Good on you though for acknowledging the 6.5X55, so many act as though it never existed.

If I was to go 6.5 it would be a swede, barrels last a long time it is very accurate and you can reload a good bit hotter with 98 mauser or modern actions.

A very informative and surprising video - two very different cartridges whose ballistics (with proper bullet selection) are not so different; one traditionally promoted for hunting and the other for long distance paper punching. My experience with both cartridges is that they are great cartridges and their traditional roles can easily be reversed by using the correct bullet design. If I had to pick one, the 270 would be it.

Great video Ron !! When I was a teen, I received a 30-30 model 94 with open sites as a gift, that was 50 years ago. The 30-30 was very popular back then and the ammo was dirt cheap. I got so proficient at shooting that 30-30 with open sites, I could put a round up a skunks butt from 200 yds. I still prefer the iron sites today and the 30-30 model 94 is still my all time favorite rifle. Now, to the video. I have a Savage 270 rifle that blows my shoulder off every time I shoot it, too much recoil for me. I don't have a 6.5 CRD but I do have a 6.5 Grendal and a few 243 rifles, both are very pleasant to shoot. But, the 308 is my caliber of choice for a few reasons. It is widely available, it won't break the bank, and the ballistics are very acceptable within 500 yds. On a side note: I don't know of anyone who has received a "Pirate Eye" using iron sites.

I love my 94 too, but after 25yrs riding a desk wrangling a computer, I'm starting to have problems hitting things with open sights. For hunting I use a Rem 760 from the 50s in .270 with a nice Burris scope, one shot kills every time, and with one shot kills it could be a 300 win mag and that one shot isn't going to hurt enough to really bother me.😁

A buddy of mine’s father shot a bdl 7 mag for distance. At 80 he could hit clay pigeons at 1000 yards 95%. Our Seals were always very impressed with his shooting! God rest his soul.
