I’ve killed three good sized Montanan Mule deer bucks with my 6.5 Grendel with the SST out of 16” barrel. Kills between 150 and 300 yards. I’ve always been keeping an eye out for a better bullet and I’ve noticed the SST’s having a lot of fragmentation. Good video.

I’m with you on the exit wounds. Two holes always bleed better than one. And with that expansion on the gold dot, The exit wound hole should be fairly large!

The problem I've had with the gold dots in 6.5 Grendel Federal Fusion is they shoot straight through deer like a FMJ and just don't open up enough. It's rare that I get a good blood trail with them either. I've talk to a lot of people who are doing depredation work with the Grendel and they say the Hornady Black ELD-M is the ticket. They say it sticks together better than a SST, but will still fully penetrate while opening up a decent enough wound channel to cause a blood trail......
@robbrown36062 жыл бұрын
We've killed nine with SST. Always exit including going through shoulder blades. It is a soft bullet, but 123gr leaves plenty after expansion to make it out.

Having shot deer with both it’s hard to pick a winner. I hand load these to over 2,550 out of 20” barrel. The SST does blow up and come apart but the Gold dot penetrates much better. Shot a doe quartering towards me at 100 yards with Gold dot, entered between brisket and shoulder and exited through last rib opposite side, small exit hole 3/4” 120 lb. doe, over 18 inches penetration. Doe traveled 60 yards with little blood trail. The SST was broad side 80 yard heart shot, DRT, small exit hole, liquified lungs and top of heart. I like the SST, god accuracy, expansion, explosion but for larger deer, elk, I’d go with the Gold dot. Yes I’d be comfortable shooting elk with that much penetration, expansion.

Mitch, I hunt hogs in Louisiana, and have used the 6.5 grendel a lot. My experience duplicates yours. Both of these rounds are excellent, as is the 120 sierra pro hunter. The sst may not be as good as the other 2 for quartering shots, but is devastating on broadside side shots. I use an 18 inch barrel.
@AnarchAngel12 жыл бұрын
I use a 20" gun and I've found ELD-Ms to be very effective. They are very devastating for a "match" bullet. All of the deer I've taken were fairly ideal broadside shots. Got exits but it's pretty clear that bullet comes apart quite violently
@ferret197313 жыл бұрын
Both work perfectly for deer. An argument for each round could go either way, penetrating vs fast spending, but in the end, it all comes down to more confidence. If you're lacking confidence your ammo won't perform, it can easily affect shot performance.
@thegundungeon3 жыл бұрын
You are very right! Both are very effective, the only reason I’m siding with the gold dot is that little bit more of an ability to exit, and where I hunt, the terrain requires a good blood trail lol.
@ferret197313 жыл бұрын
@@thegundungeon I just did my own "test" with the Hornady SST. 230 yards, quartering towards me. Entrance wound just nicked the front of the forward shoulder, ⅝ exit wound in the opposite front arm pit, took it the top of the heart, without hitting any bone. Deer only traveled 40 feet.
@thegundungeon3 жыл бұрын
@@ferret19731 that’s fantastic! Congratulations on the deer!
@ferret197313 жыл бұрын
Update, I hit ribs both on entrance, and exit and still left the exit hole. I was actually shocked seeing that while processing. I'd of thought I'd passed through the ribs. Also, the entrance shoulder side had more damage than the exit side shoulder. I'm starting to think the SST is a little too devastating, even at 200 + yards.
@thegundungeon3 жыл бұрын
@@ferret19731 I think they definitely get the job done, you just may or may not get an exit consistently. That’s just my opinion of course. I’d love to see field reports of the gold dots.

If you look at videos with other gel tests with a wide variety of speer gold dot rifle bullets. They expand and roll back much farther to the point where the petals touch the table before the base of the bullet does. I believe this would be a perfect bullet for the 6.5 Creedmoor at a velocity range of 2800-2900fps. Or if there was a way to get this bullet going 2600-2650 in the Grendel it would be great. I just got some of these bullets to test in my Grendel. Im going to see whats the fastest I can push bullets and still get at least moa groups. If I can't get close to 2550-2600 I will be surprised but vary happy.
@phillipperkins27702 жыл бұрын
I’ve been thinking the same thing. I loaded 500 of the gold dots, 120 grain with 25 grains of AR COMP a couple of years ago when I got into the Grendel. I haven’t shot anything with them but paper. But my lifelong friend has and at 300 yards the bullet needs more speed. With research I’ve discovered I could load 27 grains of AR COMP. My loads are half moa. When you crank up the speed the groups spread. I have some 130 tipped SGK, some 129 SST,s, and some 129 interbonds. I need to get to the bench

ELD-Ms(6.5 Grendel), even though it's supposed to be a "match" bullet, are extremely devastating in my experience. They do dump a lot of energy quite early though. I've put several deer down on the spot with them, albeit they were fairly ideal broadside shots. My favorite load for taking deer is a 130 gr Nosler Accubond in .270 win. Load them with 58.0 gr H4831sc and they shoot sub MOA out of my stock R700 and hit deer like Thor's hammer but still almost always fully penetrate the deer no matter the angle. I'm talking big Midwest whitetail too

I’ll see what I can come up with. Reloading isn’t necessarily cost effective in itself, but can save you money on certain rounds, 6.5 Grendel being one example of that. I rarely load range 9mm or 223 anymore just because the cost difference isn’t enough to justify my time or components. I’ll see if I can put it all in a video for you.

Loading doesn't save you any money. With the tools and components cost if anything you will probably spend more. Though after doing enough loading to pay for the equipment. You do get to shoot a little bit more for the same cost. That's been my experience anyway. It was much better when I started and you could get 1k primers for 40 bucks instead of 100

@@mikehudak1727 Jessica has quite obviously never shot a rifle at long range. With the absolute best ammo, best barrel, best conditions and a flawless shooter behind the gun that's still not possible. I could start to believe 1 inch at 200 but even that takes excellent gear and excellent shooting under ideal conditions. That would make the rig a half MOA rifle (slightly better actually)
