In this video I talk about how the 6.5 Grendel, .223 Remington, and 5.56x45mm NATO compare to each other.
I think most shooters and hunters, but especially those who like using Modern Sporting Rifles, probably agree that the .223 Remington/5.56x45mm NATO are effective cartridges in certain situations. At the same time, the shortcomings of those cartridges are also very apparent to many people. This has led to the development of cartridges like the 6.5 Grendel that are designed to improve upon the performance of the .223/5.56, but still function in an AR-platform.
The 6.5 Grendel is currently one of the most widely used of those cartridges. As good as it is though, the 6.5 Grendel is not perfect and there are some downsides to using it.
So in this video, I'm going to do a detailed comparison of the 6.5 Grendel vs 5.56/223 where I discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each one so you can decide which cartridge is best for your particular hunting situation.

I have them both. Love plinking with the .223/5.56 and love how the Grendel delivers out to distance. There isn't too much difference in recoil... but I have a break on my Grendel which helps a bit :)

I love both cartridges. I don’t prefer one. If I was going to hunt hogs or deer, and I could choose, I’d go with the Grendel. Although, a good Barnes 62-70gr TSX/TTSX in .223 is a good option. Of course if all things were created equal and 6.5 Grendel reloading components were as readily available then I’d probably stockpile Grendel. Since that’s not the case I have a large amount of .223/5.56 brass and projectiles. A lot of people say the Ruger 10/22 is the ultimate survival rifle, well I disagree, I think an AR-15 is the ultimate survival rifle. You can go with a lightweight 14.5”-16” barrel, separate the upper from the lower and it will fit just about anywhere you need it to be. The ammo is very light weight, and still effective enough to take game, stop threats, even dangerous threats. So if I could only choose one, I might actually go with the .223/5.56. I’m surprised you never mentioned the .223 Wylde chambering. Although I can understand why you didn’t. It is becoming one of the most common chamberings in AR barrels though,

.308 is the best round for survival, anything you need a 22 for, buy 10/22, the .223/5.56 is too weak to hunt anything bigger than a coyote, it will kill with a good shot but that deer will run, also idk where u live but if u get attacked by a bear good luck with ur 5.56, mag dump a .308 and you will drop it, cant say the same for 5.56. The fact is that it doesn’t have the stopping power, thats not to say u shouldnt have one, but the cartridge is too weak for hunting, much harder to feed yourself with a 5.56…

A .308 can take down anything in north america, with moose and fat grizzlies, yes it will take multiple shots, but a fast 22 wont do shit against these animals lol

Anyone recommending the 22LR as a survival option is taking into account the number of rounds you can keep on hand and the vast majority of survival foods in wild game are small game. However many Great Depression times folks used the 22LR to hunt everything do it's price and availability of the rimfire. No one could afford center fire cartridges during hard times. It's whatever you got that matters in the end.

Been wanting a Grendel upper for a while now. Sucks that the ammo is just not as available in the 6.5G here of late. Will get one though. For anyone wanting on hog performance. Carpe Sus uses the Grendel almost exclusively. And with a wide variety of bullets. Very educational for on game effects. Keep up the good work on the caliber comparisons.

6.5grendel ammo is back. Don't think it's as hard to find as some claim. Wolf, Barnaul , Remington, federal, Hornady, ppu, Sellior and bellot ammo is available and pretty cheap. And much much more available. Bulk cheap ammo website is great.

Love the review, agree with 99% of your analysis, but I do disagree that the Grendel is a reasonably popular caliber. The low availability and extremely high cost per round, I would venture to say it is not popular enough. Wish it were wildly popular so the price for brass-cased rounds would drop back to $1.00 or less. 😔

I've found the Grendel online for as low as $360 for 500 rounds and average was about $430... You just have to order the ammo online and buy in bulk...

It’s a fun round. I’d shoot this upper more but in normal times, 5.56 is cheaper and easier to get. Luckily, I can still practice with the same gun.

I have a bolt action 6.5 upper for my AR15 from uintah precision. It gives sub MOA results with home loads and just makes minimum energy/velocity numbers to hunt all deer species in Scotland. 223 or 5.56 calibres don’t produce enough velocity and energy to be legal to use on deer in most European countries

how is the 6.5 Grendel more aerodynamic but also has less of a flat trajectory at the same time? doesn't make sense
@kvasir121
@kvasir121 2 жыл бұрын
I suppose that is because 5.56 has more velocity, so it will travel slightly further than Grendel before hitting the ground? IDK what is really meant by it either, just guessing.

6.5 projectile has a higher BC (more aerodynamic)...but the little .223 projectiles--being half the weight--leave the muzzle initially moving much faster. Drop chart values are fun to compare, but they aren't everything. It's all about trade-offs.

Gravity effects all things equally ... 9.8m/s^2. Drop is a function of time and horizontal velocity. So essentially if you fire both at the exact same time and the same vector(up/down aiming angle) they'll roughly hit the ground at the same time downrange(ignoring stuff like spin drift for a minute). The difference is that the faster bullet will have covered more horizontal distance in the time it takes each to hit the ground. That's what makes a bullet "flat shooting"... velocity. The aerodynamics measured in ballistic coefficient tells you how rapidly the projectile will slow down, as it tells you about the drag on it. So if you have two bullets that start off at the same velocity, but one has a better ballistic coefficient, the one with the better ballistic coefficient will retain more velocity and will therefore cover more horizontal distance before hitting the ground. It gets complex when you have bullet A, with more initial velocity but a worse ballistic coefficient, and bullet b with less initial velocity but a better ballistic coefficient. In this case, bullet A and bullet B will have a crossover distance where bullet A will have lost enough velocity relative to bullet B to give bullet B an advantage in trajectory/energy/wind shift...etc. In the case of grendel and 5.56, grendel starts with more energy and does a better job of retaining it downrange, so its advantage in terminal performance grows, relative to 5.56, the further out they get.

Do you hunt? A good size hog is harder to take down than a black bear which has a relatively soft body and besides what you read from folks that think they’re somehow bulletproof, it’s just not the case. I haven’t used my Grendel to hunt with yet but have done a ton of research and it’s interesting especially when you read from older hunters than feel that for some reason the 6.5 caliber just seems to kill better when hunting and then start in talking about the bc and penetration and from what I’ve read and seen several videos on it seems to be true, from what I’ve seen so far, especially with that video of a young girl taking a monster bull moose at a little over 390yds with her AR15 in 6.5 Grendel, and if you can find the site where they actually get deeper into it than what you get from watching the video, it’s pretty hard to argue against

As a matter of fact, I do hunt. A lot. I've taken a number of hogs and bear as well. Hogs are darn tough, but I wouldn't necessarily say they're tougher than a big bear. In any case, I haven't seen any videos of a young girl killing a moose with a 6.5 Grendel, but I have seen one of a girl shooting an elk with a 6.5 Grendel (which is what I think you're referring to). Sure, she killed it, but that video is hardly a ringing endorsement of the effectiveness of that cartridge on really big game. The 6.5 Grendel is a massive step up in performance from the 223/5.56 and I think it's great for deer and hogs, but let's not kid ourselves either by saying it's a suitable elk or moose cartridge. Will it work in that role with perfect shot placement and under the right conditions? Yes. Is it something I'd recommend hunting elk or moose with? Absolutely not.

I'd take cheap 6.5grendel over expensive 223. And with c products 26rd duramags feeding is better than mil spec. I got chrome lined so I can shoot cheap steel and use a fast match or binary trigger it's sub moa. . I think 16 to 18in barrel mid length is best nitride or chrome lined . Anything past that has minimal gains.

I prefer the 6-5 Grendel it does a great job on hogs which is much harder to kill than deer abused 223 on deer and Hogs dear are so easy to kill the 223 works great but really sucks on hogs

I've never had an issue with .223 on deer as long as it's Whitetail or Axis. I'd probably want a Grendel if I were hunting Mule deer... Never hunted hogs so your advise is golden to me.
