The caliber debate, what is best... really there is no answer. We've had much success with the 6.5 PRC though many still judge those who use the 6.5's. Here are a few kills with the PRC. Is it the ultimate caliber, no. Will it get the job done, certainly. Still have to make wise decisions and hunt within your own skill level doing your best to make quick kills.

You guys have literally made the 6.5 famous lol as it should be. I wish people knew how many people I've seen take a elk and moose with them, same as the 7mm08 way over looked round, I've seen rich boys come up with there 300 win mag and can't hit the side of a barn because they flinch before it even fires , these 6.5s are absolutely deadly, have been for a long long time, people that live around big game and have hunted them for lifetimes seem to have no problem using a 30-30 and 243 or 270 or some random country boy caliber, while all the outsiders think they have to bring a 7 mag or bigger usually 338 or 300 it's absurd to me. I can take a 6.5 and kill anything in north America and I'll bet anything on that

Thanks. If I had a dollar for every time an internet KZfaq expert told me the 6.5 is too small I could retire. Perfectly capable of used at respectable distances. Not an 800 yard elk cartridge but in my opinion I tons think anyone has any business taking shots at game that distance or further. Shot steel enough that far to know too many variables too much can go wrong and the game deserve more respect than that.

@@BrandonandStacyHunt I fully agree I won't ever shoot anything bigger than a deer over 500 yards and that's honestly pushing it I like to keep it 350 or closer with any game and any cartridge, I have personally taken several big game at 5-600 and I'm a nervous wreck everytime simply because I personally can not stand to wound or loose and animal and it be my fault, to many variables past 400ish i.m.o and I won't do it unless I strictly need the meet and it's been a bad year, last year I took a deer at 620 yards with a 7 mag and I don't care if I had a 338 I just don't feel good about it me and my brother both was biting our nails it's just not worth it, under the 350ish I will sling any caliber at them and have killed many animals with a 6.5 and others. I'm getting a new Browning x bolt in the 6.5 prc and I'm going to slay the deer with it I've never understood people hating in it I've seen it over and over take everything up to moose and am honestly stoked I reload anyway and will probably have every PRC made you guys keep doing good work me and my little man (3 years) love the content

I agree. The best caliber is the one that you are most accurate and comfortable with. Through several comment sections in other vids dealing with this, I have often acclaimed and held up the example of Rob at deermeatfordinner. He went up to Canada on the Cree Nation and got a moose in a canola field, at some distance with Hornady 143 grain ELD-X out of his Howa 1500 in 6.5 Creedmoor. One shot and dropped. I have known others who say that you should not hunt whitetail with less than a .300 Win Mag. My rifles are all in .308 Win. For me, that is a cartridge I can handle with comfortable grain weights up to 180 grain. I am also a firm believer in recoil management. You cannot be accurate if you are flinching. And anyone who thinks that have to hurt after shooting a rifle is someone I will disagree with. Mightily disagree with. And look through these threads and you will find old fellars like me who have spent a literal lifetime hunting with a .270 Win, precisely because it is a long action and can go really far. So, it is a good combo for hunting deer on your aunt's 20 acres or hunting mule deer on the front range. I have a rifle I would easily call my 1,000 yard rifle. Others that are useful in other circumstances at 800 yards and less, and also good for resting on a bench. And my newest one shooting 1/2 MOA with a hot barrel and weighing less than 10 pounds, so it is my light hunting rifle. So, I can totally see 6.5 PRC working for just about any big game. And I know a number of people who think the larger straight wall calibers like .450 Bush Master, .350 Legend, and .45-70 Govt might be the way to go. And they are good, too. And have a specific use. Again, choose a caliber and weight that you like and can shoot well. And for a lot of people, that is the 6 mm and 6.5 mm variants, or their cousin, the .270 Win.

Well said. I just bought a SAKO S20 Hunter in 6.5 PRC and it is an absolute tack driver and a joy to shoot. A few weeks ago I shot a 1/4 MOA group at 300 yards with factory Hornady Precision Hunter 143gr ELD-X ammo. I am currently working up reloads for this gun and I cannot wait to test them on the chronograph and for group size. To your point, it comes down to what you are comfortable with and shoot well. I am so comfortable with this new 6.5 PRC gun and I cannot wait to take a whitetail with it.
@ronws2007

@@waderatcliff-ci6lg I am not sure about most states but in mind, the minimum centerfire on state property drawn hunts is .243 W. So, all the 6s are good. I think it just comes down to a minimum of frontal area and terminal energy. I am now working with my newest rifle, a 7 mm PRC to be my all around hunting rifle from whitetail upto the bigger game like mule deer and elk. Maybe even a moose, one day. At 1k yards, still putting out more than 1k ft-lbs of energy. Flat shooting. It is more recoil than a .308 but I have that handled with a slip-on because I have the rifle in an Orxy chassis.

@@ronws2007 7mm PRC is a nice round and I have seen the ballistics on them. I think you will be very happy with that for big game. A little over a year ago I got a 28 Nosler and kind of wished I would have waited on the 7mm PRC. The 28 Nosler is a beast and a hot rod-but at the expense of barrel life. I am averaging 3,275 fps from a 175gr ELD-X with my reloads. It’s a little much for Whitetails but I plan on taking it elk hunting one day. My 6.5 PRC is my go to whitetail gun.
@ronws2007
@ronws2007 Жыл бұрын
@@waderatcliff-ci6lg The ballistics on 7 PRC is what finally convinced me to get it. Plus the SAAMI specs. Any rifle you get is going to be good because the free space (jump between chamber and bore) is so small, it is basically a precision rifle to start. I am glad I waited. Other times I thought of getting a 270 W, .30-06 Sprg, even a .300 WM with its punishing recoil. But I would back off because I could do what those were doing, except for the .300 WM, with any one of .308s (I have more than one of those.) .308 Was always my favorite round. But I have seen how it behaves in the wind and any of the PRC rounds are going to perform better than it and a lot of rounds, including .30-06. The one advantage of .30-06 and .300 WM is they can push heavy bullets and .300 WM is good in the wind to about 500 yards. My favorite and best book on long range shooting is the "Long Range Shooting Manual" by Ryan Cleckner, formerly sniper team leader in the 1st Ranger Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment for a number of tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. His was an M-24 chambered in .300 WM. He liked it because, out to a out 500 yards, and most of his active duty engagements were no farther than that and often quite a bit closer, he could dial elevation for distance and instead of calculating, simply hold left or right edge of target zone into the win and get 220 grains of ouchness into the zone. That also works for the pie plate on a deer and the baking dish on an elk. And 7 PRC can do that. Modernly, Cleckner really likes the .300 PRC and feels that the Rangers should adopt that, replacing the .300 WM. Currently, Rangers can get an MRAD that has the parts for .308 W, .300 WM, and .338 Lapua Mag. The Army special forces (Green Berets, SF, etcetera) can get the MRAD in .308 W, .300 Norma, and .300 Norma Mag. Granted, if I had access to a friend with an aunt who had 20 acres and just one bean field to worry about, I might grab my TC Compass II in .308 shooting .516 MOA on the first two shots of a cold barrel. But really, I want to work with the 7 PRC so that I am so used to that going after big game doesn't require any new training by then. I have a trigger that is pulling 2 pounds 2 ounces. Perfect for me.

How were your blood trails? The elk looked like he left one a blind man could follow. The moose didn’t “need” a follow up but good on y’all for popping them again I’d have done the same. I’ve killed a few deer with the 143eldx can’t complain a bit, I’m waiting for some 156 bergers to come in I’ve sold my 7rem mag because it offers me nothing but more recoil unless re-barreled to faster twist. I’ve said for years even big animals aren’t bullet resistant, just have to wait on the right shot angle. I still hunt deer with 243win most of the time shots are inside 300yd and have dropped as many with it than my buddies running big magnums. Thanks for sharing!!!

1500 ft-lbs is a good rule of thumb for elk. However 1200 will do the job with good placement. Know your caliber and the ballistics and you’ll do great with it. I’ve been checking out the 7MM-08 and it’s just shy of 1600 at 300 yards. So can I take an elk at 400? Maybe. Getting 300 or less is optimal. Nice video.

You might want to use a hunting caliber designed for large game: 25-06, 7mm-08, 308, 30-06 etc. You'll see more consistent results. It's much more humane than wandering around the woods tracking an animal because you used an inappropriate caliber.

The only cartridge you may have an argument with on your list is the 30-06/308 with 180-220 bullets. The 6.5’s speed out of a PRC coupled with its superior SD with heavy bullets will preform better at distances over 300 yards. The fact that you listed the 25-06 first is funny because the 6.5 prc sends a larger heavier bullet faster. If you wanted to make this point, here is a decent list. 30-06, 300 wsm/wm, 280 ai, 7mm mag anything, .338 anything and arguably 270/6.8 western. The theory your defending is a larger bullet diameter cases more tissue trauma to reduce shots necessary to cleanly and quickly kill the animal. However the difference shooting a 338 Lapua vs that 6.5 prc is going to be significant. I would say, if I was her I’d opt for something in the middle like a 300 wsm/wm with a great brake and can where legal. But another boring video with those cartridges won’t get you tube hits. Most of us are here to see if that little 6.5 gets the job done when we have all opted to shoot larger heavier recoiling rifles.
@404Jeffery
@404Jeffery 2 жыл бұрын
Why are you even mentioning the 25/06? A 120gr vs a 147 gr, no comparison. The 25/06 might be a great western deer cartridge but pretty light max bullet weight for Moose. Scandinavian hunters have been shooting Swedish Moose for years with 6.5 x 55's with complete success, so its complete rubbish to say that the 6.5mm is an inappropriate caliber.
@wesleyturner1979
@wesleyturner1979 2 жыл бұрын
@@404Jeffery just because the sadistic Swedes have been tromping through the forest taking 4 or 5 shots to finish late game off with a 6.5 millimeter bullet doesn’t mean that’s the proper way to go about killing larger game. Any man unless disabled or under the age of 16 should be taking at least a 7-08!out for game bigger than a deer at distances up to 300 yards. It’s not about what can do it but what should do it that counts!
