In this video, I go through the problems with the 6.5L Chevy Engine. I talk about the common issues, and inherent flaws with the engines design, and the modifications to fix these issues.
This is my real world review of the 6.5 Optimizer conversion, in my 2000 Nissan Patrol. I go through all the modifications done to my engine, fuel use, performance on & off road, reliability since ownership, maintenance schedule and tuning potential.
I have included full sound clips of this absolute beast, full 4" straight through exhaust. Unlike most 6.5 videos that leave out the best bit of these engines...the sound!

Yes great honest review, and so true about turning up the fuel, losing the fuel economy. I’m so torn. I have 4l80e auto with 3.9s behind mine and just love it.

Thanks heaps for the video. We've had our Optimiser for nearly three years. I am still optimistic about getting it right, however it has has some issues. Thanks for the info on where to get parts.

Great review, I recently picked up a land cruiser hj75 dualcab from Australia that has the Brunswick Diesel 6.5 conversion. Great explanation of everything about it. For me the 6.5 is much better then the stock 2h it originally had, out here in America our landscape can vary from smooth long straightaways to climbing 6 7 8 thousand feet. Plus with our highway speeds people fly out here. So it’s nice to keep up with traffic. My truck weighs roughly 6400 pounds.

Good honest review, I'm on my second vehicle with the 6.5, this one has the P400 and I'm loving it. There is just something about that note. Missus says it sounds like a Greyhound bus at idle. and you are dead right about doing your research. Overall, a great review...

great informative video at least the way it is you can travel AUST without a worry ,as soon as you start sticking big turbos and big boost on you have to start thinking of all the fail points on the drive line PS it sound great way better than my modified td42.

Hi, thanks for great feedback. It was definitely a work horse, happily plodding along. That was the plan to keep it reliable, saying that the torque took its toll on the gearbox so i had to rebuild it. Check out my other video on the rebuild, was a huge task. I do miss my Patrol 😪

I sent my 2015 GU to Brunswick Diesel in 2019 I have done 100,000kms in my 6.5L optimiser now and have never got the fuel economy you have spoken of, the best I get is around 16l’s per 100kms which is rare. Usually mid 17’s to 18’s and worse in city driving. I could really use some contacts to help with advice here in western Sydney, NSW there doesn’t seem to be many people I can chat to for help or any repairers familiar with the motor, any advice people have will gratefully received. Hi Phil, check out the Facebook groups Aussie 6.5l chev diesel and Australian 6.5l chev diesel owners groups. Also some good U.S Facebook groups to, just have a search. My engine must of been running very lean, the pump was still on the brunswick run in settings.

They come with a 3076 Garrett , I put a gtx 3584 (ball bearing) from pulsar turbo systems with a .63 exhaust housing, .82 is to laggy (new flange on down pipe is needed for vband ) and grabbed coolant from the heater, also had an upgraded injection pump from Brunswick. Ran great!

Bet it had some get up and go, mine must be running really lean. Gets great fuel mileage, but barely makes boost unless underload. 👍

You can add a pump and exchanger or small rad (and reservoir) for the interior cooler and it'll really drop the Temps and you can add ice to the system.

13.2 litres per 100km is good for the 6.5 on the open road at 108km. My 200 2008 Sahara with same accessories as yours at 3.8t was getting 15.72 litres per 100 at 110km with motor tune, lockup kit on trans, twin 3inch into single 4 inch

Hey Dave, yes it did pretty well. Especially with the 4.3 diffs, but the more I have looked into the more I realise the engine must be sitting bang on its peak torque. Around 2350rpm, at that speed. Would love to see the figures with towing a camper.

If you run the air dog or similar fuel delivery systems you get enough fuel flow that the PMD will not go bad mounted on the IP. The turbo definitely neds to be upgraded and the Harmonic balancer definitely needs to be replaced, I snapped a crank when my Harmonic balancer broke apart. These engines are good if you tinker with them. They are not work horses like a Cummins but are good for little 4X4's and jeeps plus get great milage.

Yes they are good on fuel and if well looked after will just keep on chugging. We don't get the electronic injection pumps down under, all DB2s. 👍

i have a 2003 chevy workhorse winnebago motorhome , first thing i did was move the PMD on a heat sink near the front bumper , the old girl has never missed a beat ,, 6.5 best fuel efficient v8 diesel out there , my rv weighs in at 8700kgs and i pull a 4500 kg trailer ,, still get great milage ons still overtake going up Mt Ousley , Rob NSW

That's pretty impressive, I agree for such a big engine it really does sip fuel. Have you had yours tuned ? Do you have the mechanical pump ?

sorry buddy i forgot i have the DB4 electronic pump , I have had to change it out after winnebago did a Tune up on the RV and stuffed it ,, They are very easy to work on ,,

When was this one put in I’ve just sent my patrol down for the same conversion an quote says electric fuel pump did they work out a replacement do you know?

Hi Juan, this conversion was done in 2015. They are probably referring to the Electric lift pump, you will get a db2 mechanical injection pump. 👍

I got my manual 2005 gu patrol converted to a brunswick diesel and love it.ive just done 10,000kms towing a combined weight of 6.2 tonnes of car and caravan...fuel consumption at 110kmph is 22ltr per 100. And around 21ltr per 100 driving at 100kmph. I also had a dyno a few thousand k's ago and it produced 584nm at the wheels.i was told as the engine wears in that figure will rise a bit.. Great engine so far and sounds awesome.

Hi Troy, that's great torque numbers at the wheels. Assuming it's stock on the Brunswick pump settings. These things just chug along pulling weight all day. Nice big lazy V8. 👍

I considered this conversion in my 105 1fzfe. Ended up doing the fte conversion purely due to lack of info on the chev. Running 185hp and 650nm at wheels. Did you consider doing anything with your 105?

Hi Dan, if I had my time again, I would keep the 105 and go with an fte. I quite fancied turbocharging the fz, however the reason I hated that engine was the high fuel usage. You can't go wrong with the fte.

Hi Craig. I am about to get Brunswick diesel to complete my upgrade on my GU with the 6.5 Optimizer. What would you suggest i get them to do while in there to save me doing it latter? Like the 4" exhaust etc.

Hi Paul, a fluid dampner would be good if they would fit one for you. 4" exhaust is not really necessary to be honest. The trouble with the brunswick 3" exhaust is the bends are not mandrel. The Carter Black 15psi lift pump is a great addition to.

Put an om606 from a merc in heaps more power not a lump Of pig iron mechanical pump as well wouldn’t pay 35k for that

@@keithy363 Need to be careful with a 606, they generate allot of heat and have problems on the top end when you turn them up. The 6.5 is a good smooth runner

@@Terk131 all I hear from every conversion is pain in the arse , I’ve seen all the conversions done on KZfaq and the stupid amount of money spent on 20’year old cars with f all creature comforts it just seems be easier buying brand new with warranty and being done with it no conversion seems worth it , or just buy a car that has hood potential for power ups , even worse are the dual cab chops 🤦♂️ just buy a ram or f truck that has bigger drive train , more power standard than any 200 or y62 could dream of

@@keithy363 They aren't to bad if you can fabricate parts needed. I have done many conversions and most are pretty straight forward. The 606 is a good engine and nice and light but generates allot of heat when cranked up but its a power house and I would use it before a cummins.

Hi Roman, its from Brunswick Diesels in Western Australia. They install them as part of the conversion, believe it's an adrad intercooler 👍

I’ve got an opportunity to get an unregistered 75 series bruns diesel I just gotta learn how old the bastard is and no idea about cruiser conversions I’ve only found patrols so far As I understand it it’s cause the patrol is way easier drop in and can use most of your guts in the conversion anyway But I’m not gonna be hauling much just doin firewood so maybe a 2h would be right But it’s about FUN

Turbo 6.5 or N/A ? Just make sure it's an optimizer block, for more reliability. You can then Turbo it in the future. A 2h will do the job for sure though.

@@FJaypewpew optimizer was made from 2000 upwards. You can check the castings symbols in the valley of the block. It's either a brunswick reconditioned engine or new crate optimizer.

This conversion back in 2015 was $36k but included other work. This conversion was done by Brunswick deisels in WA.
