Today I want to share 6 of what I think are the best travel photography lenses for Micro Four Thirds camera system. After using Micro 4/3 for more than 9 years and after visiting so many different places in the world, these are the lenses that I frequently use for travel. For travel photography, it is important for these lenses to strike the perfect balance between size/weight and image quality/performance. I used to have the 14-140 mm lens. It was great in a number of situations; however, in Medieval Europe I found that it wasn't wide enough. I sold it. My favorite travel lens is the Olympus 12-40 f 2.8.

I had the 12-40 2.8 too, I used to travel a lot with my Lumix 12-35mm f2.8, but nowadays I prefer something with more reach.

14-140 + 56 1.4 sigma or 42.5 1.7 is all you need on holiday.

I've the Laowa 7.5, Summilux 15 f1.7, panasonic 12-35 f2.8. I've also the Panasonic 45-150 ( decent lens ) However I've recently reverted to the 14-42 kit lens because of its range and weight 📷👍

The 14-42mm kit lens is quite special in my opinion, I used to have it and was quite happy with the result that I got from that lens!

I find it hard to believe you got that shot of the bird @3:47 with the 14-140 f/3.5-5.6. Very fortunate as you had to have been fully zoomed in and at the tightest aperture. The crispness looks very fortunate; as that bird was in full flight, so you had to be panning with him. I imagine some crop; but lets face it. The closer he was the harder it would have been to get him on screen. Nice grab, as he had to be close to get the compression.

Thanks Gary some great ideas. Personally I love using the Lumix 12-60 f3.5-5.6 with my Olympus EM5 mk iii when away. It’s a great range and is weather sealed like the camera. I also take the Olympus 25mm f1.8 and the 40-150 kit lens.

Just back from a couple of weeks in Japan (and I live in Shanghai) : I love the Laowa 6mm f2. Superb lens for cities. The Oly 12-40/2.8 was my most used lens, such a fantastic lens (and mine is the older v1 version which is an absolute bargain) the 40-150/2.8 filled out my Oly lenses and that is superb too. Usage from my kit was Sony 10% Olympus 90% and Oly lens breakdown 12-40 60%, 6mm 15%, 40-150 15% Sigma 56mm 10%. Don't think I could improve the lens selection much (maybe the 25/1.2 would see much more use than the Sigma 56/1.4).

Thanks for the recommendation! I love your channel keep it going. I bought the 35-100 and was amazed with what the small lens can do. just to note, I updated the firmware from V1 to V1.3 and it allows dual IS with my GX9. It can even do dualis2 but I think Gx9 body doesn't support it. stabilization is still amazing. Though not recommended, if subject is not moving much it is possible to handhold sharp shots at 1/60s 100mm!

I was thinking of getting that 20mm! I ended up going for a 14mm pancake and probably gonna get the 25mm 1.7.

Personally, any relatively fast 35mm lens (equiv) on crop sensor camera work fine as only one travel lens. I had some trips using only 23f2 on Fujifilm camera (and recently, 17f1.8 on Olympus camera). Small and light, they work great in most situations from landscape to portrait without any need to swap the lens. They are also have good minimum focus distant. So with some cropping (or 2x digital crop on Olympus), they are also good for taking close up shot of small object and food too. Any 40mm lens (equiv) work great too if you focus more on portrait. It's slightly less versatile though.

My Favorit Travel Kit: OM-5 + Oly 12-200mm + Leica 9mm + Oly 20mm + Oly 30mm macro + Oly 45mm f1.8

I’m preparing for my holiday and have restricted myself to the smallest and lightest setup: gm5 and the kitlens 12-32. In total 285 gram’s… I will zoom with my feet…😂

My choice is either that GX85 and the 12-32 or the Olympus E-M10 Mark III and the pancake 14-42.

You might think this lens is an odd choice for travel, but I like to include the Olympus 60mm f2.8 macro in my traction kit. It provides a nice y telephoto focal length but comes in useful for shooting close in a lot of occasions. Especially around flowers or interesting small subjects. It’s reasonably small and light too.

14-140 Superzoom during the day, once it gets darker you switch to 25/1.7 cheapo prime and a cheap TTA 8mm/2 for $140 might be not as good as Lowa but its cheaper. Also power 12-42 pancake if you you need backup. Full set mixing used/nee would be around $500

If there is only one reason to choose MFT system, it would be the lens options. I'm impressed by the 20mm the most, it is tremendous

Only one? Oh dear. I have both Sony and Olympus - and there are many many more reasons to have an MFT kit. I love them both.

My fav lens is panaleica 12-60, i added also om system 40-150 f4, and panaleica 9mm, but i think i prefer a 10, but the laowa 10mm was a bad deal near the panaleica 9mm, so i went with the latter. This will be my kit for iceland on bike next month

I got the 20mm for my gx85 for a trip to Iceland. Hoping it will be wide enough for decent landscape shots.

Thank you Gary, i love mft. The problem with mft lenses is their lenses are so good even if you buy used and their prices are so damn cheap. Thus i have problems in choosing which lenses for me. There are Olympus, Sigma, and now cinema lenses like Meike.. let alone the chinese manual lenses like 7artisans TTartisans, Kamlan. These are more cheaper even if you buy new.. i’m having GAS Syndrome right now.

Hello, I used Alpaka Go Sling Mini sling bag as my "camera bag". It isn't a true camera bag, just a regular sling bag but since Micro 4/3 is small, I could fit my camera and lenses in that small sling bag. Here's my review of the bag: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7ufZtJ70M28qoE.html

You could have stopped with just the Olympus 12-100 F4 and the Laowa 7.5 F2. Why complicate things with inferior, slower kit lenses? Maybe another fast prime but that's it.

That's a good point actually. I actually prefer smaller lenses because I'm very used to it. I have tried the Olympus 12-200mm f/3.5-6.3 but it's significantly bigger and heavier than what I am comfortable to use for travel.

I didn't say 12-200. I said 12-100. Having the equivalent of 24-200 on a relatively light lens means there's little need to swap lenses as you're walking around. The Laowa makes sense when you want a very wide shot and potentially in low light. But even so, you could probably just take a few panning shots and stitch them together in post-processing.

@michaelblumfield3933 I forgot to mention that the 12 100 is bigger and heavier than the 12 200. Good point! I have similar setup when I visited Labuan Bajo a few months ago, with the Panasonic 14 140mm and Laowa 7.5mm plus Panasonic 20 f1.7, worked great as well. I think it really depends on the location, and the shooting style as well. Thanks for sharing!
