As requested in this video we'll be doing a some swatching and colour mixing of one of my watercolour palettes, the six colour limited travel palette in the portable painter micro. Limited palettes are really interesting to work with, both for ease of transportation but also to really push your understanding of colour mixing. With this palette I wanted to focus on a selection of colours that provide a useful range of mixing for the subject matter I enjoy, and also to be transparent and non-granulating. Pigment properties that are useful for line and wash illustrations, and illustrating/painting a variety of subjects. Don't get me wrong, I love a good granulating colour! Ultramarine and a burnt sienna/ultramarine combo both have solid places in my heart and on my other palettes! Its just not a property I wanted with this selection - plus it allowed me to explore mixing without ultramarine available to me.

Pthalocyanine turquoise is a gem of a color! I'm the type that struggles to decide what top 39 colors to include in a palette, so watching the range of colors you made just from 2 color mixes from your limited palette felt magical and inspiring! I know have ideas for some colors I want to include in a limited palette and I'm excited to experiment~ thank you for sharing!

Ooo have fun with your limited palette experimenting! It's amazing what a few colours can do, though I must admit I am a sucker for wanting several kinds of blue and earth tones on my larger palettes so I feel you there 😂

What a lovely video. I’m new to watercolours (coming over from gouache), wishing I’d seen this before I ordered some colours recently, love the choice of primaries especially as they are non-granulating. Saved for future reference. Thank you 😊

thank you for this swatching and mixing exercise - i do not have any formal art training and have been collecting watercolor because I love the idea of painting. I currently use colored pencil and definitely understand the color layering when using them however watercolor is very different. I have now decided i need to go back to basics - i have dug and found the pigments you referenced in my collection. I am determined to figure this out and appreciate you adding to my knowledge today.

Thank you so much for sharing your experiences. Watercolour can be a really beautiful journey, I hope you have fun experimenting and learning about colour! It helped me a lot when I was starting out to learn about colour theory and then apply it using a limited palette. I may do a mixing video or a how I learned colour mixing video to share those experience in the future. Have fun with your paints 💜

Gorgeous palette, especially the phthalo turquoise! It makes some lovely purples and greens. I find colour mixing really intimidating, but I've recently been trying to experiment more, and I'm starting to enjoy it.

Denise Soden created Denise's Green with Da Vinci, but not by using PY150. She's used a similar pigment and another great mixer - PY129 (Green Gold) - together with Indanthrone Blue

French Ultramarin from Sennelier is non granulating. Botanical Artists use these, e.g. Billy Showell ;-) If you want to add a non granulating one to your palette.

Regarding Indanthrone Blue (PB 60), you could also try Holbein. Their paints tend to be quite concentrated in pigment and don't come with some of the behaviours (e.g. streakiness) of M. Graham, in my experience. Holbein's PB 60 (Royal Blue), however, is cooler than Daniel Smith's. P.S. Pet hair = texture!

Thank you for the recommendation! I'm currently looking at trying Da Vinci Paint Co's PB60, but if that doesn't work out for me I'll look into Holbein's :)

@@daenafae Da Vinci is a good option and their PB60, which I also own, is similar in hue to Holbein. My only reservation with DV paints is that they seem highly sensitive to *any* imperfections in paper sizing. For me, their darker colors and Phthalos fairly consistently produce a white "speckling" in washes. Also, their earth pigments tend to be far more granulating than other brands, which may or may not be to your liking. Either way, I hope DV's works for you.

that red orange is so stunning!! personally, i think anything more than 20 or so colors in a palette would be too much, but i do enjoy the 16-20 range a lot. i often paint with limited palettes of around 3-5 colors, but im constantly changing the selection based on the painting and also my mood lol, so i like having overall palettes with a wider range. also as far as the green goes, there is denise's green (denise soden from in liquid color!) a sap green with py129 and pb60. i think it was for her earth friendly watercolor palette with da vinci, which i think she said is part of why she picked 129 instead of 150, but the two are very similar in that range of mixes so maybe it's what you were thinking of?

Yes, thank you! You're right it's Denise's Green but I misremembered the pigments lol. Palettes in the 16-20 range are great for me as well, I love my studio palette though it's a bit big to bring around with me!

I went through the same indanthrone blue dilemma and landed on Qor's version, it's the most saturated, even compared to M Graham, but I know it can be hard to find in some countries. If you can find it though you might like to try it!

I have a set of 18 Vangogh paints they were just my main watercolors I run out of 5 after 3 years so I would say about 6 colors I mainly use. Quin Rose, Burnt Siena, Burnt Umber, Ultramarine, nutral tint, sepia. This is a very dark palette.😅

I like to experiment per work with another limited palette and sometimes the mixing results suprice me if I find on this way very useful colorcombinations :) I´m thinking it is and was a lie , that there are only 3 primary colors and that´s why they call it color theorie and constuct for a better understanding a colorwheel model ... but there is a lot more between. for examble the ultramarin is awesome pretty and I don´t believe that someone can mix this spezial redish blue color with a CMY palette. my primary colors per artwork are what I use - 1, 2, or 3 colors are enough for a pretty colorwork in harmony and I have a lot of fun to play with different colors per work :D I´m thinking you will have also a lot of fun with your choice in this tiny 6 color palette :D

Question : this particular limited palette -- what do you plan to paint with it? And was your intended subject matter the inspiration for the colors you choose?
@daenafae
@daenafae Жыл бұрын
I use it for a mixture of topics in a mainly ink and colour style, so I wanted something that suited that range. I mainly paint animals, human characters, nature and fantasy which means the six colours have quite a lot to cover. I went with non-granulating pigments to accommodate for painting humans, especially in a line and colour style. I do love granulation in paintings, and granulating colours are a mainstay on my larger palettes where I have more room for a range of options. I also chose transparent, or as transparent as possible with what I own in the case of the red orange, since I love doing ink and wash. If I'm using the watercolour on top of the ink I want the lines to show through as clear as possible. Thank you for the question!

The red orange is the only color im scratching my head at..... while the brown red is prob not my first choice, i think it would be a nice dark in a limited palette. But the orange....why not just a mire true red that can make a orange with ur yellow?
@daenafae
@daenafae Жыл бұрын
Good question! I have two reasons why I picked that orange in the end. The main reason is that the orange is a pigment/paint I haven't had as much experience with and I want to practice with it more. Second is that the other choice for that spot (a warm red from Mission Gold but I can't remember it off the top of my head oops) was more opaque, so I chose the orange over it. I picked from pigments I already had because I'm trying to not buy new ones for now. Even if it's tempting to! If I weren't trying to learn one of my lesser used pigments then I would probably have used DS Pyrrole Scarlet, my go to warm red on my main palette 😊

Love your color selection 😍 Personally I dont have a preference when it comes to how many colors I paint with, mostly depends on, do I have an extra hour for mixing with a limited palette or do I need to paint this past with 40+ palette 😅😅😅

Lol you have a very good point! I love working with limited palettes for colour harmony and travel but there will always be a place for my studio palette! For me it's the variety in earth tones and blues that I can never get enough of 😍
