The JAS 39 Gripen is a well-known Swedish fighter. It entered service in the 90s in its first version, the Gripen A, and since then it has undergone several updates, the most significant of which gave rise to the Gripen E, the last and most modern of its lineage.
Although it is a relatively famous aircraft, many facts about the Gripen E are unknown to the majority of the public, so today we will look at six incredible facts about the Gripen E.

It is such a well thought out aircraft and affordable to fly and maintain. The fact it can land on a decent highway and be rearmed and refueled with the engine running by 3 to 5 personnel iis huge too. I wish Canada had chosen this to replace the aging Hornets. You can assemble and maintain it with the handy allen key included in the flat pack too.

The Gripen E is almost a new fighter compared to the previous versions having a larger fuselage with more mount points, bigger fuel storage etc. etc.

That doesn't really make any sense. If you are hiding what your aircraft can do, by mechanically limiting it then your pilots also have no idea what it can do and will probably crash when that switch is flipped. I bet it only unlocks electronic aspects.

The notion that something with a peace/war switch has not been tested with the switch a "war" during peace-time is just stupid. Of-course it has been tested. Possibly in radiation-secured spaces for eg radio-spectrum equipment. Most state-of-the art war equipment properties are kept secret to some extent. In some cases you want a capability to be well known, as a deterrent. In some cases you really want a capability to be kept secret, so as to minimize the potential enemy to devrlop counter-measures. A peace/war switch minimizes the risk of displaying secret war-time capabilities during peace-time.

I can see how this plane would stand well in a conflict. As it’s not stealth design per se, it’s smaller and has superb electronic jamming tech. Meanwhile it’s super maneuverable and can carry loads of equipment.

Issues with Stealth plane is that once figured out, it is useless. Gripen however can just make a software update.

Because of its potency/cost ratio, the Saab JAS-39E Gripen is literally the best fighter jet in the world, unless your country is called The United States of America and has am essentially unlimited military budget. For the same money, an air force populated with Gripens would be more powerful than an air force populated with ANY other plane, including the F-22 Raptor.

There are already advanced negotiations with the Philippines and Thailand, and additional units for Brazil. It's just a matter of time.

Agree. I hear Saab is already designing model F. Yes, stealth is nice, but limited in ordinance and high cost. Thats why the F-15 & 16 are getting makeovers.

Canada absolutely bought the wrong plane. The Gripen was almost purpose built for the needs of our air force and our primary defense mission. The protection of our northern border. We sgould have bought the Gripen E.

The Canadian reality is very similar to the Swedish one, from the climate to the type of threat. The Gripen would fit very well with Canada's needs.

Due to delays in the F35 productions. Canada should acquire enough JAS 39 E enough to have 3 frontline squadrons and training planes. This could allow Canada to retire the oldest CF 18 who are rapidly becoming obsolete.

Nice presentation. There was something here that you stated that I heard for the very first time about the Gripen E. We have heard that it will supercruise, but in this video you stated that "it will Supercruise even in combat configuration". You are the first source I have heard that from. Yeah that RCS... Even though the RCS is small, it its travelling in supersonic on radar. It could mean its a fighter or a missile... Although I prefer this Jas Gripen fighter coz its more cost effective in maintenance & operational cost...

It’s a long “i” pronounced more like the “ee” in “green”, so “Greepen”.

'Gripen' means 'the Griffin'. A 'grip' is spelled like this in Swedish for a reason, the 'i' is pronounced long, like 'ee' in English. If the 'i' should be short, there had been two 'p', 'gripp'. 'Greepen' it is. And, 'graipen' sounds like 'ripen', bananas.

Stealth is much more than radar. With the new infra red sensors Gripen will be able to see stealth aircraft’s.

In August last year President Zelenskyy announced that Ukrainian pilots had already started training on Gripen. It'll almost certainly be the Gripen C/D though. The production of the Gripen E/F has barely started and there aren't many of them in the world yet.

@@tessjuelZelensky was a little hasty, but halfway right. A group of Ukrainian pilots were in Sweden, at SAAB's training facility and had an introductory course, where they learned a bit more about the system, how it works in reality, not only through YT, so to speak. The pilots were impressed, and the talks about whether Ukraine would buy Gripen or not intensified. However, to be honest, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if a training program secretly started in a limited way not far after that introduction.

I think this plane accompanied by f 35 would be lethal...the f 35 is like the quarterback you always wanted on the football team its amazing in its capabilities and is stealth ...but it is a sexy plane that has a great multirole capability just imagine 4 f 35s and 10 grippens flying into your air apace man come on

In theory it is a 4.5 generation fighter. In practice it should be something like generation 4.75 (if this classification existed), as it has almost all fifth generation technologies with the exception of the stealth fuselage.

@@TruthSeekerAll Unless you want to attack targets inside Russia or China, a good electronic warfare capability is still sufficient for most scenarios and there is no need for a stealthy airframe.

We haven't even seen any Russian ones since we put up the specially designed "The Singing Sailor Underwater Defense System"; underwater neon signs reading: "Welcome to Sweden. Gay since 1944." and a picture of a man wearing only a sailor's cap and tight short, the light is blinking so it looks like he is doing the 'Elvis moves'. Simultaneously sending a Morse code: "This way if you are gay". Scares the homophobics off. Why 1944? The year homosexuality became legal in Sweden. 😂 (I don't know if that one sign is still down there, and it wasn't the Swedish military forces who put it there. In 2015 the Swedish peace organisation, Svenska Freds, put it somewhere in the Stockholm archipelago, hinting at the anti homosexuality Russian laws.)

A Gripen costs $4K per hour to fly while an F35 costs $40K per hour. That's a big advantage as is the ease of maintenance with just a 5 man crew. It's short take off is designed to allow it to fly from roads rather than airfields as these soon become targets. It's also produced in Europe which means we're not dependant on the US senate to approve supplies etc. Now Sweden is a part of NATO, we should be using (and building) this fighter across Europe.

Ummm... no. 1.2M is the top *cruising* speed, as in, *sustainable transit speed on just the regular engine* The top speed *with afterburner* is well over M2.
