My tiktok reached 13.1M people and half of them were upset about the chore chart system I have in my share house with my roommates.
What do you think? Is is a great system or am I a dictator even though we all came up with it together?

I actually really like the chore chart, sure when someone else has to tell you what to do, some may take advantage of being in the position to have to tell someone what to do (if that makes sense) and then that creates a hostile environment but even if you live alone this is a good way to discipline

It just makes it so much easier because there isn't one person telling everyone what to do it's just there and everyone knows and has agreed - I love it

When I lived in sharehouses, I was the worst housemate. Turns out I had undiagnosed ADHD, and a chore chart would have been a godsend but my housemates were generally impeccably clean people who just knew when and how to clean everything. I was a mess. I love your system. (Only thing I don’t agree with is the not rinsing the dishes, even if the dishwashing water is super diluted- I notice many Aussies or their parents do this. My family is from Chile and we use a small bowl with concentrated soapy water and wash each dish and pile them into the sink. Then rinse each one quickly and set to drain.)

This simultaneously stresses me and and makes complete sense hahaha I’ve got adhd and a slew of health problems and the idea I’d mess up and have to do it all is so anxiety hahah but completely agree for the need otherwise it’s left undone and one person ends up doing it

Have lived in shared houses for more than 10 years! Sometimes I find it a bit over the top to clean something every week so one way to loosen it up is as follows: Every one has a task (like cleaning the kitchen), either it rotates or you are the one who always cleans the kitchen (while the other tasks are comparable). Then you have a traffic light system for letting that person know when they should clean again. Green is for clean, yellow for should be done soon, red for please clean now! That way it stays relatively anonymous, you don’t have to talk about it and it’s super easy to communicate when something should be cleaned. Always wanted to try it but we always had other systems

I live in a co-op, so similar idea just on a bigger scale, and yeah you need some sort of chore system otherwise like two people will end up having to clean everything and anything they don't clean will get awful. Think of it like the popular conception of the bystander effect, if someone isn't specifically told that this is their share and they're expected to do it, they'll just assume someone else will do it unless they're a specific type of person who will burn themselves out trying to keep up with over a dozen people's messes. The person at my co-op who is in charge of making sure people get chores that they can do (since some people, like me due to chronic hand injury, can't do every job, and things that need to be done particularly frequently can't go to someone who's going to be out of town for more than a few days) and keeping track of strikes is actually elected, like pretty much all official positions at the co-op, so if someone is being unreasonable and more than half of the co-op agrees they can be removed from the position. They're also does have to be an understanding that for some people, the standards that a co-op can be kept to have to be lower than their personal standards since some people have a higher expectation than others can / are willing to keep up with, so it's all about compromise for stuff like that

Hmm... very interesting concept. How does the bathroom get cleaned? And what is the implied "clean as you go" motto look like? Would love to implement something like this at home with my young adult son! 😂

Clean as you go means that you always clean up after yourself and maybe some extra that seems sensible (putting away all the dishes, cleaning the sink after doing dishes etc)

how do you get rid of a strike, like when do they reset?

I think it'd make sense to reset when they do the week chores for everyone after getting 3 strikes. They're giving everyone a week off of chores by doing all of them and that makes up for the other roommates having to take up the slack those weeks that they didn't do their own chores and got the strike
