The plastering and painting of the pool walls is shown in this video. The application of the blue paint and the leveling of the floor are also shown. You can also see how I prepare the pool edge to be able to build edge tiles on it later.
Plastering a wall is quite hard work, so I was happy to be able to sit there now and then. The plaster mortar also dried out quite quickly. That was because of the sun and the wind. So I had to level the stucco fairly quickly after application and then correct it. At one point I decided to do some plaster early in the morning and late afternoon.
For the complete build of my swimming pool, see the playlist with all videos;

After I finished plastering I leveled the floor. Due to the rain damage, the floor was too coarse to walk on with bare feet. I also think it is always necessary to level a concrete floor, with or without rain damage.
During the drying time of the cement on the walls and floor, I had started to apply curbstones, parallel to the edge of the pool. Pool edge tiles are generally 30 cm wide. The concrete blocks are 20 cm wide. So I had to make the pool edge wider for the edge tiles. Hence the application of the curbstones which I have built on the wall of stabilized sand.
After the cement on the walls and floor had dried for a sufficient time, I applied the blue rubber paint. Finally, after this job, the swimming pool was no longer a large gray area, but it had the beautiful sky blue color that you expect from a swimming pool. That is why I especially liked this job.
The chlorinated rubber paint had to dry for at least 12 days before the pool could be filled with water. If during that period rain would fall on a day, 1 day of drying time must be added. Fortunately during that period it only rained on 1 day, so after 13 days I could start filling the pool with water which will be displayed in the next video.

About to do something generally similar in my backyard in the next year, but with a deep end and a bottom drain used for both the pump and emptying the pool for refilling. I appreciate the detailed documentation of this guide. I’ll have to do mine in what we call Georgia Red Clay instead of sandy loam - wish me luck.

Hi Martin, thank you for your videos. For the plaster I am confused, did you use special waterproof plaster? Or just normal plaster (that you would use in a house) followed by waterproof paint? Did you put anything under the plaster on the concrete blocks that was designed to waterproof them? Or just the normal stuff for non-swimming pool use? It seems like your main waterproof method is the paint. Is that correct? Thank you for your help!

Hi Joshua, The paint is indeed the layer that ensures that the swimming pool water is not absorbed by the walls. With the blue paint I basically put 2 coats of rubber on the walls. The plaster is a normal plaster but was suitable for outdoor use. The primer was necessary for better adhesion of the plaster to the concrete walls. Greetings, Martin.

I'm building something similar indoors but only a foot deep, its for washing area rugs in, its what we do. I will be doing pretty much everything you have done but will be tiling the floor and walls, will i need the 10day drying paint and then tile over or is there something else i need to do before tiling the floor and walls. any advice would be great. Breeze block walls, concrete floor, then self levelling compound, then i was just going to tile but ive been told i need to make sure the concrete and walls are water proof before tiling, what would be a good product to use? preferably something that doesnt take 10 days to dry. great video, very informative. thanks

Hi, thank you for the compliments. I'm not a real expert on the subject regarding your question. But I know that you can buy a special material to mix with cement instead of using water. That material will make the plaster water resistant. I believe it is not wise to tile over the paint which I used.

Hi Martin me again. We have finished the rendering and are just about to paint. Did you do anything special to the plaster/ render before you painted? Acid clean or prime ? Also how long before you have to repaint? Thank you for all of your help regards Deb
@MartinVledder
@MartinVledder Жыл бұрын
Hi Deb, I didn't do anything special before painting. The only important thing is that the stucco layer is completely dry before you can paint it. I took a period of 4 weeks for that. And I swept the walls and floor a few times so that I didn't paint over loose cement and dust. I vacuumed up the dust that fell on the floor. That's about it. I really don't know when to repaint. That will tell the future. To date, after 3 years at my pool, it is still not necessary. Good luck painting.

Hi Martin I do hope you and your family are well. I have more questions and I really appreciate your help along the way. We have started to render the walls and have been following the instructions from a renderer who advised us however some of the render has developed tiny hair line cracks. I have been wetting down the walls each day (it’s been very hot here in Australia) I am wondering if this happened to you and if so what did you do? I am tempted to skim more plaster over the top but my husband is unsure. Again I appreciate your help thanks
@MartinVledder
@MartinVledder Жыл бұрын
Hi Deb, thanks for your reaction. Everything is fine here. Very annoying that you have hairline cracks in the cement. I had maybe a few (3 or 4) hairline cracks at the time. But they were barely visible. They were also still visible after I smeared the blue paint on them. I wasn't too concerned about that. And that turned out to be right because it hasn't gotten any worse. In other words, it's not a problem for me. I understand that you want to put more plaster on it, but then hairline cracks can appear again and that's how you keep going.

Hi Martin we are just about to render. The questions I have are. Did you just do the one coat of stucco? We are concerned about not being able to render the whole job in one day. Did you have any issues joining the new render with the render you finished the day before? Can you give some advice about joining new to previous? Also how thick was the coat? Sorry about all the questions but appreciate your response. We are hoping to be able to swim this summer (Australian) it certainly has been a labor of love Deb
@MartinVledder
@MartinVledder Жыл бұрын
Hi Deb, I did indeed apply 1 coat of stucco. I certainly couldn't get the job done in 1 day. It's pretty hard work. It took me 5 or 6 days. I had no problems continuing from where I left off the previous day. It actually came naturally. Maybe it's better to do whole planes from corner to corner. But you are highly dependent on the amount of stucco you have created and the speed at which it dries. I noticed that at a certain point I had to stop because the plastering was no longer going so well. The next day I just started plastering again where I left off. And that went well. I planned a thickness of 1 cm. But in practice the layer at the bottom is thicker than at the top. That's because I always worked, strip by strip, from the bottom up. I applied a few strips of stucco and after a while I corrected the unevenness, smoothing it out with a clean trowel that I kept damp. Later again, when the stucco almost hardens, I did that with a wet sponge. That way I could get it fairly even. I had never plastered before, so to be honest I was a bit apprehensive about it. I just decided to start and learned during the plastering what went well and what not to do. A professional plasterer will be very critical of my work, but I did it my way and was quite pleased with the end result. Good luck with the job. Greetings, Martin.
