We went to New Hampshire for a weekend with 2 of our 4 sons and their families to the 25th anniversary year of Boogies N Blues Festival. It was great to hear so many blues musicians. And the kids had a ball! Ages 5-8. Otherwise we have a pool, so we have stay-cations here.

My summer vacations were to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico and also to Maui & Oahu, Hawaii. I made sure to pick up some yardage of locally produced fabrics so that I can come back and use my 3 Yard Fabric books to make some quilts to help remember these wonderful vacations. I love your pattern books because they are SO easy to make and to use! Thank you so much for all your wonderful fabrics. I have a goal to get out to your shop (I live nearby in Sachse, TX so I really want to make a short journey to visit your shop live!

Please remember, we are not a typical quilt shop. We only have offices and warehouse. So we aren't set up for visitors. If you are coming to Quilt Festival in Houston, I would love to meet you! Donna

John, that flower fabric you showed last, reminded me of flower-covered VW buses. Of course, that would be for a much older girl. :) Great tips from both of you....loved the video. My tip is to keep crazy glue in the sewing box. Really comes in handy when those blades 'attack.'

Love the chemistry between Fran and John in their videos. This was a good reminder that it's time for me to order another 3Yard Quilt pattern book. I've made all of the quilts in the Easy Peasy book and thoroughly enjoyed each one.

I found Donna's videos when she was just starting out on the Virtual Quilt shows there are lots of other KZfaqrs out there but I just loved the "Realness" of these videos. If Donna messed up she just laughed and was so honest about it! I like Fran and John and Hannah as well but I have one little pet peeve it's when John/Fran calls Donna "DONNA" we know she is your mother and don't need you to call her Donna. Please call her mom. Hannah Donna is right for you lol.

I have no problem with John and Fran calling their mom "Donna" in these videos because Fabric Cafe is a business. It seems quite appropriate to me as the purpose of these videos is to sell fabric and patterns first and foremost. The fact that we as viewers and customers also feel we know them more closely as a family is because we've seen and heard them interact with each other more than just a few times in these videos. But newcomers don't have that advantage. I could see that one of the reasons to refer to her as Donna is because she is the writer of most of the patterns. "Donna Robertson of Fabric Café" is part of their marketing identity - Donna is a product, so to speak. In an unusual way, they are showing her the respect of a senior partner of the firm. I don't think that lessens their love and respect for her as their mother. Another thing to consider is that although they're related, each of them has a different last name. By John and Fran calling her Donna in the videos, perhaps it makes it more comfortable for others at Fabric Café to also call her Donna versus Mrs. Robertson, and see each other as all being on the same congenial team in the public videos or in the workroom. It's all an unusual set of circumstances, isn't it? But I can see their reasoning for doing it this way.

Fran, thanks for the thread tip. I am just starting out quilting and kept hearing only use 100% cotton. My stash is polyester due to clothing sewing.so I was thinking I would need to buy lots of thread. Thanks! Kathleen

I've only been quilting (on a basic model Brother machine) for 5 years. I was doing just fine until last week when my stitches started skipping and my thread started making nests on the bottom of my fabric. I thought I should clean the machine (for the first time- shame on me). I had been afraid if I removed the cover plate I'd not get it back on correctly and I'd ruin my machine. Well, I opened it up and was appalled at the amount of lint in there! I cleaned a handful out- using a soft, thin, artist's brush and a pair of tweezers. The lint clung to the brush bristles, making the job easy. My machine works so well now, lol! I will never put off this task again. It really is true what a difference a new needle, a lint-free machine, and a new, clean rotary blade makes.

Thanks for the tip about the rotary cutter. The blade will be replaced tomorrow (it is almost midnight in Germany - it will have to wait until the morning ;-)). I just bought Fran's Fat Quarter book and am going to use my many fall fabrics to make the Trees Quilt.

I have ordered just recently from the other “Donna” on the phone. She is so helpful. I’ve order several kits to make the regular size and one will be a twin for my great granddaughter. I’ve had shoulder surgery just recently so I’ll be ready to sew up a storm. Again, thank you #1 Donna, Fran and John for all of your wonderful fabric choices.

I like your quilts and tips. The one about adapting the rotary cutter for lefties came at the perfect time. I've just moved close to our granddaughters and the 6-yr old is a lefty. This will help when we begin to learn how to cut and piece quilt blocks together. Thanks.

I really have to tell you that I finally have every book you have published!! I’ve had a few for several years, but finally decided to get all the rest. Plus I take screen shots in my iPad when watching your videos as a great reminder of the fabrics used in the quilt plus the new fabrics that are available at a certain time. I’ve been quilting since I took my very first class - hand piecing only - in 1979. Our fabric selections were quite limited in those days but we have so many choices today that sometimes it can be really confusing. Should I buy a certain fabric or should I wait in case something else takes my eye!!!! I usually just get everything😄😄😄. Thanks for your videos and I’m hoping to finally see you at a quilt show - I live in North Carolina and there just aren’t the big shows we used to have before Covid so I keep hoping one will come closer to me (closest is Daytona and that’s still quite a drive). Thanks again! Keep up the good work.

Thans for the practical aspects of what we do (or try!) Is it a good idea to mix quilting cottons with flannels? I have 1 yard cuts of both and wonder if that might work out well? THanks so much Cath J
@FabricCafe
@FabricCafe Жыл бұрын
Regular cotton and flannels tend to shrink differently. If you want to try it, I suggest you overcast raw edges and launder both types before you mix. Another thing to keep in mind, When designing, we plan to use 42" width after selvages are removed as our width of fabric. Be sure to check your fabrics to see if they are less than 42". You may need to add just a little more fabric. Donna

Ok..guys, I made a huge mistake last night cutting out some 5” squares and ending up slicing my middle finger on my right hand( I’m a left-handed) person, so..again as y’all say, you can’t be to careful with a rotary cutter. My fabric and ruler slipped, and there went my finger. Boy..did I ever bleed. But..I’m feeling better so as I heal, guess my husband will have to cut some fabric for me. I have to get back up on that bike and keep going. So..folks be..extra careful with all cutters, injuries are not require in trying to make a quilts. I was to keep injuries at a minimum.
