Variety is the spice of life, yet so many bassist use just one sound. Let’s be brave and branch out with some sounds that don’t get enough love.
Used in this video: Behringer Octave Divider, Supro 1304 Fuzz, Ibanez AW-7, Walrus Audio, Iron Horse V2, TC Flashback Delay, Digitech XMC Multi Chorus, Tech 21 Programmable Sansamp, Empress Compressor mkii.

Sounds like you are part of the minority that branch out. I know lots of players that only ever play one sound. Could just be my circle of musicians though. Thanks for the comment! I really did love demoing all of those sounds 😊

@@GettinBetterWithDave Perhaps. These are the 6 sounds that are probably most frequented by bass players that do mess with effects. I used to be a plug in and go guy, myself. That was until I was replaced by a computer doing synthy things, and then was asked to comp a synth part for another group shortly after. An Octave, a fuzz, and a chorus were my first introduction to effects and I've never turned back.

@@GettinBetterWithDave Yeah, it sucked, but it made me determined to never let it happen again. It's hard to pin down the genre of music, but it was all done by metal guitarists, a drummer that could do anything and a soul/gospel type singer. It was like a neo-soul/metal group if that makes any sense. That group sadly crumbled shortly after my departure anyways. I'm still out playing all the time!

Thank you for your feedback! My goal was to inspire players that have never tried these sounds before. Not to make never before heard sounds. If you use all these sounds I believe you are in the more creative minority of bassest. But that’s just my opinion. Thanks for the comment!

Chorus (+reverb) is great for fretless. Octaver can be usefull when playing high on the fretboard while keeping also a low-end. AutoWah for old funk. Distortion can be nice for a solo.

LOL! My default signal chain for literally decades has been Octave>Flange>Fuzz>Comp>Reverb. Just a touch of each. I also don't shy away from (auto-)wahs, defretters, and whammy pedals.

Good video about playing bass with effects and some tips to play with them but those are definitely the most common effects used on bass. It kind of feels like a video about basses that most bass players are afraid to use that includes a P bass.
@GettinBetterWithDave

I feel ya. I agree that these are the most common effects used on bass. The point I was trying to make is that the majority of the bass players I see at shows or have played with over the years only use one sound, straight into amp or DI and never try effects at all. Perhaps I should make a “part 2” video and try to get sounds that you’ve never heard before. 🤔 Thanks for the comment!

Great video!! I think its hard to utilize many of these sounds especially in a live scenario. Many effects either reduce or obscure timbral harmonics( dist, fuzz) or they restrict rhythmic control as in the case of delay and reverb. 99% of the time bass is utilized as an accompaniment instrument and it is generally sought after for these very features. Ofc theres exceptions to this rule. Music is artistic after all.

Thanks for the comment! My hope with this video was to challenge Bassist to try something new. I think these type of sounds can work, even in a live context, if dialed in well and used sparingly/tastefully.
