I've got the Nestico book, the Berklee books, the Gary Lindsay book, Inside the Score... But one more wouldn't hurt.

I think the most important thing writing for big band i have learned doing it a fair bit now is, the most important thing is how the part looks. Is it clean, does the grouping of bars make sense, are the rhythms clear. Are there clear dynamics, consistent use of Sharps or flats. Those are the things that matter a ton that are not apart of the creative proccess. It's more of a craft thing really.

MrHestichs totally! This video and package is about how to actually write/arrange music for 13 horns and rhythm section, not about “copyist” techniques, though Steven does touch on that lightly as well in the package :)
@MrHestichs
@MrHestichs 5 жыл бұрын
@@ChadLefkowitzBrown Wonderful. I can recommend making videos about the coypist side too. Because there is virtually no information about that. You would have a monopoly for sure on that ;) For my case, I just wrote for the town big band where I play and encouraged all kinds of feedback.

Thanks! I'm a rock guitarist but I've recently grown to really like the 'sound' of brass in big band/swing/blues/pop music and want to maybe incorporate some elements into my tracks, but I'm completely clueless about arrangement (or even instrument sections). Very enlightening video (despite the fact that I'm not in the target audience of savvy music theorists!).

No musical training. I write gospel songs [sing words, work out basic chords and find the key, can write a basic melody line]. As a volunteer dj on a community radio I chose to play the jazz of a hundred years ago (approx) and wondered if I could fit my songs to the big band style so am trying to understand what makes it and get the "feel" of it. Unfortunately can't afford the Au$42 to by your material. Thanks. I will come back again and listen, something might start "sounding in my head" and give me a breakthrough.

That was a really fascinating insight into a musical form I have no experience with so if it makes sense to me then you've done a really good job. Looking forward to experimenting with some of these techniques now.

What's the ladies name playing Bari? When I was in HS we had an associate Jazz band director named Diane DeRosa, she was a great player, she too played Bari. Richie DeRosa is her brother, he played with Jerry Mulligan.

Chad, Great video again. Now I know this off topic so my apologies, but what is your mouthpiece set up there? Tip opening, chamber, baffle etc ? I know it's a SYOS piece but was wondering about the spec?

I'm having such a hard time in my Arranging big band class. I need help with Soli line, Brass writing, everything, drops 2's etc. Does this have it all? I have to do an arrangement of a standard for the whole orchestra; 13 horns and rhythm section.

When I write for sax solis, I use block voicing. It’s easy and I get a good result. I wanna try writing for big band but I always hit that cursed writers block. Combine that with my lack of knowledge of jazz theory and you get a person who has a hard time writes simple sax solis

@@TomEyeTheSFMguy Basically means that every voice is playing chord tones. Each instrument is playing a different note in the chord. Here's a video by Adam Neely that explains this exact concept: ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rdWIlshktZ7Xp4E.html )

Hello, beautiful work of what I was looking for, nevertheless, I will ask anyone of you with your permission to help me with arrangement of a song. I needed in a week time for a recording. Horns section: Trombone,sax, trumpet and piano, guitar, drums and bass. I will provide the main chart with chords of the original and a track of the song made before.
