Hello. thank you for these wonderful videos . I am very drawn to the idea of living in Mauritius but you didn’t mention the healthcare system, and good doctors and hospitals in Mauritius. (I’m not at all I’ll) but being an older person now I’m naturally interested in a good modern healthcare system. As well as sand sea and fun!! I know Mauritius well from my childhood, it is a beautiful place. Thanks so you much for answering all these questions.

Hello! There are a few good private hospitals here as well as government hospitals, but it's a known fact that if you need serious medical treatment, Reunion, France or South Africa are your best bets. I was lucky as I had knee surgery, and the island happens to have one of France's best Orthopedic surgeons right here. Otherwise there are some very good doctors in all regions of Mauritius. I hope that helps :)

He loves beach and island life and I want him to enjoy some beach life again. My question is , if Mauritius is a good place for a dog ? I am a bit concerned about the animal cruelty on the island. Hi there! After 16 years away, is there any chance that you’d come back? My kids struggled at first as they missed friends and family terribly. 3 years later, and now they are happy with the school and have adapted well to island life. Of course, nowhere in the world is perfect, but we make the best of what we have - and Mauritius is certainly a great option :)

Hi Lucy, Love your vlog - please keep up the great work. My name is Pat Lenferna de la Motte, married to a Mauritian and we are seriously contemplating immigrating to Mauritius to retire. How is the health plans there? Are the hospitals good - I see the specialist did a super job on your knee? Very impressive- oh well, please keep up the very interesting and informative vlogs - warm regards, pat
@LucyLeheilleix
@LucyLeheilleix 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Pat. Thanks for your lovely comment. There are some fairly good health plans here and the two main hospitals are Darne and Wellkin. I was lucky with my knee as we happen to have one of the top French surgeons living here, but healthcare in general is questionable - most people head to RSA, France or Reunion for serious medical conditions. Good luck with your move over here.

Hi There and thank you for this video. My family and I are considering moving to Africa but saw this video and this is a great place to start research. I am a surgical Assistant and was wondering would it be easy to find a job? What are the closest hospitals near Grand Baie and Tamarin. What is the cost of living there as well?
@LucyLeheilleix
@LucyLeheilleix 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Zermorah. I don't think it would be too difficult to find work as a surgical assistant. It's not my field, so you'd have to find out. The main hospitals are Wellkin and Darne, both in central Mauritius. Cost of living here is very high as everything is Euro / Dollarized and rent is high (as is food as it's mostly imported). Good luck :)

Hi Lucy, great vlog, thanks. We're looking at moving to Mauritius from S.Africa because of the usual reasons. Is the island also suitable for retirees? Looking at housing to buy: it's noticeable that more reasonably-priced properties are for Mauritians only.. How much would a couple in their 60's need to live/month? On the pet relocation forms I noticed Boerboels are not wanted! :-( I guess because it's safe one doesn't need protection from your home pets. I was there once in the 90's, have good memories. My wife's never been so we need to take a look, but it's so hard to find out when normal travel will be possible again. Any (insider) info on the situation for December or January?
@LucyLeheilleix
@LucyLeheilleix 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! You are right, local properties are vastly cheaper than for expats. Now with the new tax rate, this will have to change or many people will leave. Mauritius is an expensive place to live, so I expect the government will try to salvage the situation (and with covid) bring out more attractive offerings (like the new one year visa). Every household is different, so I can’t tell you what your budget needs to be. This also greatly depends where you live. They are strict with importing dogs, best speak to Mr Hurry: 23052568113 All of the best.

Hi Lucy. We are doing some research on emigrating to Mauritius and your video blogs are really informative. One thing I worry about is how dog friendly is Mauritius? We have 5 small dogs that are our children. Are they allowed at beaches and stuff?
@LucyLeheilleix
@LucyLeheilleix 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Lauren. Mauritius has a lot of street dogs, but there are people who are trying to curb the problem and who offer shelters and sterilisation programmes. It took me a long time to get used to seeing homeless dogs on virtually every street corner. It is possible to bring your dogs here (we have a dog) but it does require time and effort. The people at the quarantine in Reduit were so lovely....and yes, dogs are absolutely allowed on beaches :)

Hi - Excellent informative video. You have gained a subscriber. I would be interested to know in general where do most of the expats (ie those that spend a few months a year or those that may spend all year there) in Mauritius come from? I know there are many South Africans but are there many Europeans? If so, in general where to they come from? Would it be a good place to practice French ie do many people speak it in reality or is it mostly Creole and English?

Hi Ross, Thanks for supporting the channel. Regarding your question, there are mostly South Africans, French, Russians and British people living here, but of course I also know of Americans and Australians too (and people from other countries). The main languages spoken here are French, Creole and English. My experience here is that speaking a bit of French and Creole goes a long way :) All of the best to you!

Hi Lucy. Been watching loads of your videos now.. thank you so much for making them! It's making our decision to move to Mauritius a very informed one :-) In a thread below, you mentioned the new 1 Year Visa; is this the new "Premium Visa"? Which seems to be aimed at digital nomads/remote workers? Because we are considering our move to Mauritius with our 2 children (1 adult child aged 22 and our 12 yr old) and my husband works remotely for a large multinational company. So we'd likely be applying for this visa and wondered if you knew anything about it..? Also; my son is currently home-schooled here in the UK and we'd like to continue this. I got conflicting reports for a while but think I have managed to confirm that home-schooling IS possible so long as we enrol him in an accredited online school eg Cambrilearn. Do you have any experience with this or know anyone on Mauritius who is home-schooling? Lastly; my son and my husband absolutely LOVE basketball! Do you know if there are any basketball clubs/courts/sports centres around on the island? My husband coaches the local basketball team here and he'd love to continue with this. Thank you.
@LucyLeheilleix
@LucyLeheilleix 9 ай бұрын
Hello! Thanks for the comment! Yes it is possible to home school. As you say, best to go with an accredited online school. The premium visa is a great way to get a taste of island life and then decide later how you would like to proceed. Basketball is available in many of the schools and gyms. Perhaps a question for mauritius in motion on Facebook? Do email me if you need further assistance 😀

Hello, can I ask you if you know something about average salaries at the IT sector on Mauritius? I mean is there a difference between working for an international company based on Mauritius or for domestic one? Is there a chance to catch job as a software developer or domestic companies prefer to hire someone from locals? (If they protect the job market for locals as a first option).
@LucyLeheilleix
@LucyLeheilleix 5 жыл бұрын
I don't work in IT, so I don't know much about it, but I reckon you may be paid better if you work as an expat compared to being employed by a local company. There is a certain element of job protection for locals, but if you have skills that are needed, there is no reason why you wouldn't find work. Mauritius is a good place to come if you're in IT as I believe they are market leaders in Africa.

I am a Software Engineer working in Mauritius (telecommunications). Salary have different ranges but a local can expect >1700 USD per month. But if you are an expat you will get much more, they will have to pay some allowances like housing etc. A good place to start looking for jobs is myjob.mu (www.myjob.mu/ShowResults.aspx?Keywords=&Location=&Category=39). If you can find a company outside Mauritius and allow working remotely you can get very good salary - cause income tax is 15% flat. Some of my friends does this and work with a co. based in US. Not sure this is possible for you though since you will need a local job as well. For your last question, there is a severe shortage of workforce for software developers particularly, companies take a lot of expats. A lot from Madagascar. I used to work with colleagues who was Hungarian and German.

I think it would have been much easier for me to get Mauritanian citizenship, if my wife had not relinquished her Mauritian citizenship to become an Australian citizen. I will resolve my thinking about living in Mauritius in the near future. My younger daughter could get a job without too much difficulty, she is a medical scientist and my eldest daughter is a lawyer, but neither is likely to want to live in Mauritius permanently. Anyway I'll work it out. What I like most about Mauritius is the food, chicken briani as prepared by Mauritian Muslims is maybe my favourite, but there is so much delicious food there. And acknowledged as the world's best pineapple, the queen Victoria pineapple also grown in Reunion and South Africa is a standout fruit.
