Last time I got drunk I was sick in the street like a total scumbag, did endless shots with fake pub friends, woke up on a friends sofa (unsure how I got there) and had a 3 day hang over in which I thought I had alcohol poisoning. When I caught up with my daughter who I hadn't seen in a week, all I wanted to do was sleep it off. I haven't touched a drop since 5th April (longest stint since teenage - not even a mid week top up. Nothing). Got rid of all the booze in the house. I'm done. Since then I have so much more energy and I'm a better person. More focused and a better dad.

Hello everyone I’m glad I found the site very informative. I retired in 2022 and had a lot of time on my hands to sit around and do some drinking. I should’ve kept working. It got so bad that my daughter noticed my decline very quickly. She showed me a picture of myself one year prior and then showed me a current picture and it was drastic. I had to immediately go look in the mirror because I thought I still looked cool, because I looked 10 years older in one year and some change. I called recovery centers of America. Even my address went upstairs, took a shower, pack my bags and went away for 30 days. It was a great decision. It lasted for about nine months. I’m not as bad as I was before but I see I still got a lot of time on my hands so I have to make some changes. My start date is going to be March 8, 2024.

Did detox in 2017 was drinking at least 6 beers and 3 shots of vodka a night. Now slowly been drinking more and more from a couple to 5 a day. So last Monday I deiced to taper it off and try to quit again. Yesterday I started to get sick and nauseas, hope that goes away soon and pull through this.

Super helpful video! I have been a light drinker all my life and don't abuse alcohol. But if you're a problem drinker you need to quit or cut it down. The lower your weekly consumption of alcohol, the lower your lifetime risk of an alcohol related illness. If you're a heavy drinker, stopping suddenly or reducing your alcohol use too quickly, can lead to severe health complications, including seizures and even death. Consult your GP or a local alcohol counsellor before you try quitting. Thanks for the valuable and very useful information Doctor O'Donovan!🙌❤👍

If you are a light drinker you should consider eliminating it altogether. Do you REALLY get that much enjoyment from drinking a poison? Is there REALLY any benefit? Then why do it at all. I can ingest poison in small doses and it won't hurt me, but it surely isn't good for me.

Quick question (hopefully) - I want to cut down on alcohol for my overall health. I have one glass of wine each night (according to bottle, it is actually 2 standard drinks). It's my way of relaxing and winding down after a really hard day. I'm a mum to 3 kids, the eldest with special needs, and my days are incredibly stressful and exhausting. There is no off switch for me and no one else to take over the care needs of my eldest while I have a break. I can't even take one day off as some of what my eldest needs can't be done by anyone else, and needs doing several times a day. There is nothing else I know to do in place of that glass of wine to help me relax and unwind once the kids are finally in bed. I watch a show, have a glass of wine and try and switch off from daily stressors. What can I replace it with? I need one small thing that I can look forward to at the end of each day when I'm so exhausted that I don’t know how to get through another day. I know a glass of wine isn't a healthy way for me to have a few moments of down time, but I honestly don’t know what I would replace it with that has the same effect and is achievable. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After studying up on alcohol and effects, it became clear the latest research found there are no health benefits to drinking. Even one drink causes permanent bodily damage. Started out reducing the amount of drinking from a daily drink to one a drink week, then one a month, then only one on major holidays now at one drink a year. Had half a glass of champagne on our anniversary.

I Hit Rock Bottom Recently. I Quit Drinking On My Own. It Ain’t Pretty. You Will Feel Sick For About A Week. Every One Is Different However. You Experience DT,s, Vomiting, Diarrhea At First. That Does Stop After A Few Days. Then The Lifestyle Change Begins. I Found Keeping Busy Helps. I’m About 2 Months Sober Now. I Feel Physically Great. No More Worrying About Smelling The Next Day At Work. I Never Drank At Work But After Work I Hit It. I Would Drink From Friday Afternoon Till Sunday Evening. Plus Making Excuses To Not Do Things With Friends And Family Due To Being Too Shitfaced And Passing Out Then Get Right Back Up And Hit It Again. You Can Get Through Stopping Alcohol. The Craving Is Awful Sometimes. Plus You Will Actually Look Alot Better. Hope This Helps Someone Out. PS. I Didn’t Use Rehab That What I Meant I Quit On My Own I Had My Family Help Me The First Week By Staying At My Sister & Mothers Place. Huge Family And Friends Support.

I am quitting today. The reason I am quitting is because I can no longer control my intake. I tried cutting down and once I start drinking, I always want more. I can NOT limit my intake. Last time I said if I can not control my intake, then I need to quit. I can’t control it, so I need to entirely quit. I turn into an idiotic monster when I drink over my limit.
