6 strand round braid

In this tutorial I show you how to braid a 6- strand round braid. While this can be done around a core, I did it without one. From this part on, it is all about finding a proper color sequence to make a beautiful braid.

Thank you! Very helpful. I'm surprised by the number of comments asking how to start the pattern. You just take 2x3 strands and start with exactly the sequence described. I'm making a balearic sling like this and realized it's very hard not to mix up the strings in each bundle of 3 when braiding with very thin twine.

That's exactly what I was looking up how to do round braid for I am making another balearic sling my first one I just did a simple flat braid with the 6 strands in pairs of 2 so essential a 3 strand...p

You can get the exact same result by just braiding around the center cord in each set of three. You hold three strings in each hand. Take the top cord on the outside right and take it over to the opposite set of three cords and wrap it around the center cord. Then you return the cord that you started with back to the side it started on. Now that cord is the bottom inside cord on the side it started on. Then you go over to your top outside cord on the left side and do the same thing you just finished doing on the right side. That is all there is to it. You can braid it in the front or the back. I prefer the front.

Good day sir! Always enjoy your videos! Question on this one. You mentioned using with a core? I personally would appreciate it if you perhaps demonstrated that portion? Does the outside cords wrap behind the core and “over/under” with the cords on top or how do you do that portion please? Thank you in advance!

I read that you should get cords 1.5 times the length you want to end up with. So for 10 inch braided cord, each of the 6 should be 15 inches.

Mean Strom Thank you for the comment! The start is dictated by what you are making. This is a demonstration of the braid, so I simply tied the ends together. You could start with lark's head knots, a Matthew Walker knot, a turk's head terminal...it really depends on the project. Mark

Julio Cervantes ,start at the snap hook. Fasten your snap hook to something and then drape three strings over the side opposite from where you open your hook. When you drape three strings in the middle you now have six strings hanging down. If you want your finished braid to hang down six inches then you’ll want your starting strings to be three times that length plus maybe an extra ten inches. You’ll want that extra ten inches so you won’t have to braid short little strings at the end. You can bind it when you’re finished using two outside strings of the braid,doing a couple of what people these days call the “cobra” knot.

Steve,that start really doesn’t matter. It’s fine to just start braiding your pattern without any pre crossing.

Overreact much? You’re mad because a video posted 9 years ago didn’t meet your expectations? Don’t be so entitled. Your question doesn’t even make sense. Why are you trying to braid 6 strands? What are you making? A keychain? Then the start is the key ring. Dog leash? Start with the clasp. No one needs a random length of braided paracord. “How do I start braiding 6 strands out of thin air just to have a piece of braided paracord?” 😂
