Thanks for the tips. I haven't done charcoal since I was in high school been 8 years for me. The only time I use charcoal pencils is when I'm sketching out for paintings. Charcoal will be something that I will get into later on after I get back into my groove in art. Been out for 4 years and it feels amazing to be back into it.

Teaching your brain to actually SEE what you’re looking at, is harder than it sounds lol. It took me months to realize I wasn’t really “seeing” my reference photo. Now that I can see, I can confirm that this elevates your work!

This is a good start to practice with charcol! This is my first time that I am going to practice with this mediums. I never use them, since I watch a Lisa video, and wonderful advice of how you can get easy results, with color pencils, or other mediums, just practicing with charcol first. And I buy it! 😅 Thanks Lisa for those tips!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰

I like your approach on charcoal, great tips and the rose is just beautyful. Personally I prefere very, very smooth paper (like Bristol) for charcoal and graphite and seal the layers with a fixative. ☺ Have you ever tried soft filbert brushes for blending? It gives the softest shadings and transitions. Your tip with the abstract shapes made my life so much easier, it's the perfect method for everything you paint.

What if you want to add color? Can you successfully mix charcoal with pastel or Conte pencils? Do you need to use sanded paper instead?
@Lachri
@Lachri 2 жыл бұрын
You can add pastels or conte pencils to the canson mi-teintes, but sanded paper would also work. You will have to try both and see what you prefer!

I haven't tried charcoal but I actually just bought a pack of generals a week ago! I am coming from illustrative digital art and pencil sketches after 15 years so I'm planning on experimenting with different mediums and mixed media. I purchased the charcoal because before I dive in to my paints and pastels, I want to practice drawing and shading and getting values correct and stuff like that...I felt like charcoal was easier and forgiving (and you confirmed it). I'm not sure if I want to do realism or semi realism yet, but I'm definitely doing what I did with digital art, and that's creating my own compositions, so I am not going to be copying photos except for referencing, I will be putting together my own designs, it's just what I am used to. The funny thing is that my main subject is flowers and animals, so the first thing I'm going to attempt are flowers like peonies and roses! I've already drawn plenty of flowers with pencils, I actually used to draw all my artwork by hand and scanned it in to digital rendering. I'm glad for this video it's really assuring my decision to start with charcoal!

Please, do you use hard charcoal often in your drawings? Can I rely to Soft and Medium that I just got, or I should defenately get a hard charcoal pencil too?

@@Lachri I've got a couple of Oncidiums. They're in an East facing window. There's a local nursery that sells bloomed out Paphs for a decent price..$15 or so, which is less than half of what the blooming ones cost. They'll be on sale in late Feb. Yeeehaw!!!!

Is there a difference between blending and transitioning? I keep hearing the word blending when I feel like it's more of a transition between two colors/tones.

This is a late reply, but I think the tips were good for beginners. If you try to draw a rose as a beginner, don't worry if it doesn't come out like in the video. It's just one good practice subject since the shapes and values are quite random and make you force learn to draw what you see. Other good subject that came to my mind was glass bottle with water. There can be lots of reflections and refraction of light etc. that you really have to pay attention what there is in the picture and just draw them as they are.
