08:15 Notice Financial Trajectory
Once a month, every time I get paid, I sit down and do six things that help me stay organized and avoid any bad financial surprises. In this video, I share those six things.
1. Take Out Taxes
Whether you are self employed or employed with a company, it is important to make sure that you are setting aside enough money from each paycheck for taxes. This amount varies from person to person; however, it's important to take the time to make sure you're setting aside the right amount to avoid a large tax bill at the end of the year.
2. Contribute $100 To My Roth IRA
The next thing I do when I get paid is regardless of how much I make on a given month, I contribute $100 to my Roth IRA. And if I make more one month, I consider putting more in my Roth IRA. It is important to be in the habit of contributing a certain amount for retirement each month because eventually you will need money for retirement.
3. Pay Off Credit Card
I put most of my expenses on my credit card and run up the balance each month. I do this because it allows me to have one single bill to pay at the end of the month rather than having to keep track of multiple. Once I get my statement each month, I immediately pay it off and bring the balance down to zero. Credit cards are a great tool to consolidate bills; however, do not consider doing this if you do not have the self control to pay off the balance.
4. Pay Off Non Credit Card Expenses
I am unable to put certain expenses like my health insurance and rent on my credit card or I am met with a high fee. It is important to be aware of these fees and make sure you are not paying them. I set all of these bills on direct deposit and make sure that they were actually charged.
5. Move Money To Savings
Since I am self employed, I have to be very cautious with how I spend and manage my money. Whenever I make more, I do not spend more, but I set aside the extra money for a worse month. I personally like to keep my checking account at around $150 because I do not have many expenses that go through my checking and by moving all the extra money over to my savings, I never confuse saving money for spending money.
6. Notice My Current Financial Trajectory
The final thing I do on my payday routine is to zoom out and see if my account is growing, stagnate, or declining. This allows me to understand the financial path I am on and I can make changes if need be. No trajectory is right or wrong, but it is just dependent on your goals in life.

So much knowledge! Absolutely free! I was never taught anything about money, I am praying and working to change that. I am 46 no retirement no savings because I made a lot of mistakes when I started investing, trying to correct that now. Already have a few thousand$ saved up to invest for long term. I would like to know what advice you could give to start my investing journey. Listening to you gives me inspiration and wisdom. Thank you so much!

Just buy low sell high. Stick with a good company by either not selling when it’s going lower and/or buying more at that time. Almost always the good well managed companies will come back strong at some point. The other is to get yourself a financial-advisor that can provide you with entry and exit points on the shares/ETF you focus on.

Due to my demanding job, I lack the time to thoroughly assess my investments and analyze individual stocks. Consequently, for the past seven years, I have enlisted the services of a fiduciary who actively manages my portfolio to adapt to the current market conditions. This strategy has allowed me to navigate the financial landscape successfully, making informed decisions on when to buy and sell. Perhaps you should consider a similar approach.

Granted, I have Section 8, EBT, and I use Food Banks. But I have everything I need and then some. By being frugal, I can take mini vacations every now and then. I hope parents and young adults watch and learn from your videos! I agree and live by everything you talk about! Please teach this generation! Don’t ever stop! I live off $15K per year. I have 0 debt after paying off the house in 2007. I say this because I make less than you yet put the legal max in my Roth account ($6500 or $7500 for those over 50). Point being, I'd try to invest more than you are doing currently. Having more invested when you are young gives the investment more to grow on. I started investing at age 30. I should have started earlier and with more money instead of blowing it on crap. I'm not too bad off now, but could have been far better.

Austin I do the same thing with my credit card. I don't use cash, I charge everything to my credit card. When the statement generates I pay off the entire balance so there is NO Finance Charge. Even more importantly, all those purchases result in Reward Points. So whenever I buy anything on Amazon for example, I get it for FREE. I've been worried about using a credit card because everyone says NO, but I think I'm safe now that I see your comments about it. Thank you [Seattle WA]

That was an EXCELLENT video. Quite a serious presentation but so sensible. I hope your trajectory soars over the coming years, it deserves to. I'm self employed too so I relate to all this. My income fluctuates also, if I have any extra I just save more in a high interest account. I always live beneath my means. I love feeling financially secure incase something unexpected happens, like recently, I was very ill for two weeks and could not work, so I had no income at all, but rent and bills etc still left my account. You speak so much sense always❤

I spend the first half of the month being very frugal and only spending on necessities until I have enough to cover my regular payments, then the rest can be for if I want something else, like seeing a movie, having a decent meal out, or a small road trip, then I save a few hundred and leave about 100 in my checking account. Recently a lot has changed and I haven't had this hasn't been my MO, but I'll definitely be going back in a few months to that. It kept things simple and easy. I also have everything on autopay so I don't forget. Just keeps my mind clear.

Currently on a decline trajectory. But it is planned spending (saved for). Once the necessary spending is done, I will again be on a growth trajectory. I would count any positive movement, no matter how small ($100 toward an IRA) as growth.

I'm from Denmark and I find it so interesting following US personal finance. The US system just seems so complicated. I'm also living the minimalist lifestyle but it's much simpler here I think. There is no credit cards, no 401k, no Roth IRA, no need to take out money for taxes or pensions. Medical bills are non existent and housing is super affordable outside major cities. Taxes are done automatically, pension is done automatically and setting up index investing took 10 minutes and I haven't looked at it since. I pay my bills automatically so payday rutine is 1 step long 🤣 i clear my spending account so it has the amount I need for living expenses. That's it.

I am fortunate that, in the Czech Republic, I pay a monthly flat tax that covers my comprehensive health insurance and my social taxes. Tax time is easy for me: I have nothing to do. I always keep enough in my account to cover that and my monthly rent and utility bill, combined into a single payment, along with a generous amount that will cover our other monthly expenses. Additionally, I save ten percent of my gross salary each month when that is possible.

Great video, Austin. Here's a question: as a self-employed person with a variable income, do you have an accountant or do you estimate your quarterly taxes yourself?
@ElAgustin
@ElAgustin 10 ай бұрын
Hello! I personally have an accountant. They're not that expensive and I think they pay for themselves as they have so much more knowledge for things like write offs. Regarding quarterly taxes, I recently figured this out, but my accountant said as long as you pay 100% of your last years taxes in quarterly payments to the government then you are good and won't get fined. At tax season, you will settle how much you owe them and either pay more or get a return. This is my first year so I'll see how it all ends up!

Hi Austin. You mentioned things like rent and referred to them as direct deposit. I belive you meant to say direct debits.

Me too I prefer to put all the small bills or the recurring bills on my credit card. Actually me and my wife we actually use the same credit card. We pay it together. Why? Because it's going to be complicated to have another credit card and I prefer to use this time for something else. When you get around almost 50 years old. You will understand that time is precious. You can indeed do something better with your time then trowing it away for nonsense.

Great breakdown of where your money goes - you even factor in fluctuating income month by month. We even make similar income. I like to have a little more cash in my checking account though, I try to keep 1000 as a buffer, and then move extra money to savings accounts. Being a home owner, its nice to have a bit of a safety net in the checking account.

Good video. Exploring the world of finance through videos, I encountered a gem that sparked my interest. The hints about a well-versed trading strategy intrigued me. Thanks to that video, I delved deeper into the world of Tripple Capital, finding a partner that aligns perfectly with my financial goals.

II appreciate your transparency. I'm curious to what your $1k/month bills are. I'm sure that is not all food! Maybe a car note and insurance? LOL. BTW, I thought you could only deposit into a Roth IRA once a year. Do you deposit monthly?

It's food, gas, random spending, some bill. You can deposit as much as you want in a Roth, there is just a yearly limit. I do deposit monthly.
