As a BMW fan since I was 4 and owner of an E34 ('95 5 series... yeah, I'm into classics), allow me to add some points to your complaints. 1. Fully agree on the dipstick, but don't blame BMW, blame the industry and stupid drivers. Tens of thousands of car engines seize up every year in Britain alone, just because people never checked their oil level. This led to lawsuits, customer complaints and expensive repairs. Many manufacturers gave up the dipstick in favor of sensor because they could check the DME and tell the customer "you ran with low oil levels for the past x miles, so no warranty claim for you buddy boy". And sorry, if I were in BMW's shoes, I'd do the same. 2. The fuel consumption gauge is a traditional BMW feature since the '80s, before you had the luxury of computers averaging out your consumption. This feature is very useful, especially when you are driving at steady speed. In the older models, the needle would pass the the maximum consumption mark and tuck under the cluster to the point it was not visible when you were at idle, this meant you have almost no consumption. The owner manual says the gauge is accurate to some extent, only after 20km/h and it tells you how economically you are driving. In my previous diesel E30 and E34, I actually found by looking at it, that I get better mpg doing 2500rpm than doing 1800rpm. In my now petrol engine, it shows around 9 liters/100km on the highway, and that's pretty much what I get if I make the calculation on paper, based on how much I put in it. So yes, it's very handy. The M models don't have that gauge, they have a oil temp indicator. Far more useful to me personally. 3. Maintenance is more expensive if you service it at a dealer and buy OEM parts for it. This is far worse in US for sure, in Europe, some labor and parts costs are not much different than a VW or Audi and some parts, especially non-oem are even cheaper than on some consumer cars made by the like of Citroen or even Skoda. Keep in mind that most BMW parts are usually of a higher quality, designed for less tolerances. Radiators are bigger than on most cars, the engines have better, more complex technology, etc. For example my 95 E34 has coil packs for each spark plugs and hydraulic clutch, dual mass flywheel and many technical advances which in many other cars like Toyota's and VW were not present at the time. Quality and that driving feel doesn't come cheap. If you think BMWs are expensive, get yourself a Mercedes S class or even some Alfa Romeos. Coolant DOES NOT have to be bought from the dealer. It's recommended again due to warranty claims and yes, it's true. Improper coolant CAN corrode your cooling system, leading in time to a critical engine failure. With that said, you can buy blue coolant from other brands, especially those which they list "BMW" on the back of the label. That's what I'm using without problems. For 10$ extra, like you said, it's not even worth it. 4. Wipers can be complicated... I guess, never tried an E90, but I never heard any of my friends complain about it. Even cars from the '90 had a secondary function to the wipers, where you could set the frequency of the wipers yourself, and they could adjust based on your road speed. Just read the owners manual, you'll find loads of tricks you never thought your car had. 5. Cup holders are a complaint, mainly from US, since in Europe we drive, that's it. It wasn't popular here to order a Big Mac with a large coke while cruising to work for a 2 hour drive.Not much attention was put into cup holders back in the day. Older models didn't have a cup holder at all, where US cars had them since the decades. I don't have cup holders, don't need them, don't want them, don't care for them. 6. Run flats suck. But again, don't blame BMW, blame the industry and customers. Why? because BMW needs to save space in the boot. Why? because many people say "hey, look! the Audi A4 has 460 liters of trunk space, BMW only has 420! I'm getting the Audi instead!" without considering that the Audi has a space saver tire in the back and BMW has a full spare, for example. This gets worse for BMW because they have rear wheel drive and large fuel tanks. This means they have to accommodate for large differentials on the rear axle, where other FWD competitors don't suffer from that. So yes, they went that direction as well, in order not to lose potential buyers. It's a shame, that's how it is. Run flats suck anyway. BMW's should be equipped with proper tires anyway. Cheers and hope you enjoy your car for many years.

+mowglilp Just as an addition to your coments from my perspective, it took me a while to get used to the wiper stalk as traditionally you raise the stalk once for intermittent wiping and then again for continious wiping but on the F30/31 there is a button to press in for intemittent then you lift the stalk for continious but once used to it there is no problem. I had Bridgestone runflats on my F30 which were quite harsh but on my F31 I now have Goodyear Eagle F1 runflats which are far far better and much smoother, they are not the most pleasant on potholes though but the M Sport suspension doesn't help either. Not much interest in cup holders either but the side pockets are large enough to take large bottles. Personally I wouldn't service my car anywhere except the dealer until it got to an uneconomical age as BMW quite often help you out with major bills if the car has full BMW service history. That's useful as BMW major engine repairs can cost many thousands of pounds and I know of one E90 M3 owner who had an engine replaced free of charge after engine failure when it was out of warranty, without the full service history he would have been looking at £15-20k for an engine plus labour. Fortunately for some owners, on new cars there is no longer any obligation to get your car serviced at a dealer to maintain your warranty (as long as you can prove it's done to BMW standards so a potential issue there) but they won't help you when it runs out. Older models in the UK can still get good servicing prices by opting for the economy service and can work out cheaper than a specialist if you haggle a little bit. My car certainly doesn't have a large fuel tank, for a Touring it should in principal be larger but isn't. I remember BMW used to insist on their own windscreen wash for warranty purposes which has now been stopped thank goodness. Isofix points are not the best as they're too close to the centre and make the seatbelt really tricky to clip in on toddler seats, this is my biggest complaint about this car. Overall I would certainly be very reluctant to own anything other than BMW because they really are great cars to drive and I should point out my added comments refer to a car in the UK. I do hope on the next generation 3 series they improve the interior solidity a bit as it feels like it's a bit cheaper then the E90/91.

1. No dipstick: yeah that's dumb. My E46 has one. 2. Real time MPG: It's better with L/100km as that's what it originally was designed for. As for its usefulness... ehhh. It's been there since 1981's 5 series so it's probably just tradition 3. Maintenance: How often do you have to buy coolant? But yeah maintenance is expensive if you use the stealership. Do some wrenching yourself or find an independant mechanic you trust, buy the unbranded but BMW OEM parts online, keep up with *preventative* maintenance and it's not so bad at all. Either learn about your car or get taken for a ride by the dealer. In the past year all I've had to do besides an oil change is replace the 10 year old battery and top up the AC. Almost 190,000 km and runs just dandy. 4. Steering wheel stalks: I have no idea what you're talking about here lol. Might be different on an E90 but I doubt it'd be confusing. 5. Yeah the cup holders on the E90 are shit plain and simple. Even worse on the E39. The E46's are... serviceable, I guess. 6. Runflats: They suck.

Needless to say he did this video just for fun
@tobewankenobi
@tobewankenobi 8 жыл бұрын
Justin, I have a 2006 330i and I agree with everything you mentioned - except the wiper stalk, not confusing to me, push up = more wipe, push down = less wipe, push down when off = one wipe, but I always use the auto too! :) Some reviews mention the "mushy feel" of the stalks - but I find that they work well and exactly as designed. The ergonomics are that you can accomplish what you need with one touch - less distraction from driving. Signal lane change = one tap up/down => 3 blinks. Turn on wiper = one tap up (no knob to fiddle with). No need to move hand away from the wheel, just touch with the finger tip. Very few functions require holding the control in a position for very long. I would add these to the list of dislikes: Drive Off assist is too sensitive and engages when it shouldn't. It is active even on level ground, dealer says it's correct. Car always lurches when stopping and lurches when starting. No way to feather the brake pedal to a smooth stop. Separate A/C controls and no sync button to adjust temp with one knob. I have yet to figure out interaction between seat memory and key fobs. Also, wholeheartedly agree to always have car inspected by dealer before you buy one. Mine had a couple of expensive leaks! But I love driving it! (PS use Zaino polish to keep it looking sharp!) Also, I put on all season Conti DWS tires. Thanks for the vids. Toby

I've seen a similar gauge in some Mercedes cars. It's really just an engine vacuum gauge with gas mileage numbers on it instead of inches of Mercury. You can add a vacuum gauge to any car. Or use a ScanGauge. You can also get a boost+vacuum gauge for turbo/supercharged cars.

Regarding the G gauge... yes in US you have it like 1 gallon / X miles. (what is not accurate and hard to count, etc...) But BMW is from Germany, where we have metric system, so it shows how many litres of petrol/diesel it takes for 100 km. For us (metris system users) it is far more accurate and sometimes useful...

I sort of agree on the maintenance. The run flats are one of the first things I got rid of, the problem I have with the indicator stalk is it doesn't 'click' back when it auto cancels so you sometimes don't realise it's cancelled itself. The wipers have too many intermittent settings and I'm constantly fiddling with the wheel thing trying to get the exact right setting. Other than that, love it!

I think most of the people buying BMW'S don't really realize what they're getting themselves into buying these cars. Maintenance is key to these cars and most of the used ones at a "cheap" price or below average price are ones being neglected and abused and then sold when something happens to it and they can't afford the reapir(s) so they sell it for "cheap" and even though my 2001 BMW 330i is old I'm still OCD about it and constantly replacing and fixing stuff so I can ensure that my car isn't neglected in any way.

This is so true. My first BMW was a 1999 328i with 220,000 miles and an R title. That thing was BEAT when I first got it, I guess because the guy before me who had owned it for like 11 years eventually lost interest in it and just considered it an old car, so he sold it to me for only a grand. The car definitely looked like a 15 year old 200,000+ mile car with a rough dirty exterior, but it at least still ran amazing. I don't know if it was maybe just mechanically maintained well or if BMWs really are built tough and can withstand abuse and neglect, but since the car was new to me, I happily replaced the mass air flow sensor with a $200 OEM replacement to clear the check engine light (something the previous owner probably just wasn't willing to do if he no longer had the same love for the car that a new owner like myself had) and replaced the fubarded front bumper cover with a clean used one of the same color, and after a detailed wash and wax, that car surprisingly went from being a gross Ugly Betty to a pretty decent E46. I always wanted a 3-series BMW and knew from owning a few Volkswagens before that their maintenance and upkeep isn't the same as my first-car Chevy Cavalier, but I think the difference shows in the price point between how well these cars hold up over time (and even some abuse) as opposed to a cheap American econobox. Not everyone may have been as lucky as I was, but I've seen others buy older BMWs that have been beat on, and it's surprising how much neglect these cars can take.

Same here in the US. BMW drivers get a HORRIBLE rep - my own roommate even hates on them all the time knowing I drive one as well. That's actually why I make sure to be as attentive and aware as possible while driving, whether it's in my BMW or Jetta. I make sure to move over to let someone pass who looks like they need to move quicker than I am, and make sure to signal for every lane change I make, and even flash the headlights to let someone go at an intersection before me, all in an attempt to hopefully sway the stereotype of BMW drivers that not everyone who drives them is a douche. ;-) But I will admit that I've encountered people who are jerks on the road and are driving a BMW or Mercedes. The stereotype is true, but it's up to us to change it.

Wipers: Fairly easy really. Press up for normal rain wipe. Press up twice for fast (=crazyfast for monsoon rain!) continuous wipe. Press button on end of stalk to switch on intermittent wipe. The sliding wheel in the middle of the stalk changes the interval of the intermittent wipe (from gaps of about 1/2 second between wipes, up to about 6-8 seconds). Press down for a single set of 2-3 wipes of the screen (which will also cancel other modes). Pull stalk towards you for screen wash, which will also wipe the screen a few times. Or, as you say, just leave it in automatic. I don't have auto wipers on my car, but I don't see this setup as any more confusing than any of the other cars I've owned. I like the fact it slows down the wipers if you come to a standstill, then reverts back when you set off again. I certainly agree that the run-flats really give a harsh ride, and are way too expensive compared to regular tyres, however I suspect my view might change if I or the Mrs ever get a puncture on a country road in a rainstorm. Most other manufacturers that have ditched the spare wheel for weight saving/distribution or simple penny-pinching reasons just give you a can of tyre sealant for emergencies.

@r32gtr1994 Nah, man, it's just that he rises too many 1st world problems - the one with the instant mpg gauge for example. That's just a traditional BMW thing to have that gauge there regardless if it's useful or not nowadays; plus it's actually accurate on the highway or generally when going rather constant above 3rd gear. Another one is the wiper stalk thing being too complex. Come on man, just have a look at it, it really is not THAT complicated, it makes sense, you just have to pay attention 15 seconds once and that's it. I stopped watching after this one though :P

You missed out the biggest flaw of your E90 330xi: the keyless system. It's a public secret that you can open/close (and thus bypass the stock alarm) with 3rd party radio devices. Moreover, once the car is unlocked and the alarm is off, you can then duplicate the key (using the OBD2 interface), again with 3rd party devices. BMW flat out denies that this is a problem (at least in Europe), but the fact is that they chose to keep the OBD2 interface operable even without a key. It would have helped to at least have a option to make the OBD2 unusuable without a key, preventing criminals from copying it. I strongly advice all BMW owners with the keyless system to disable their OBD2; just tell your dealership how to enable it again, as of course it's needed for diagnostics. And unless you're tuning your car or do your own maintenance, you probably don't need the OBD2 at all (only the maintenance shop). I suggest your search the web or talk to a mechanic on how to disable the interface; there are many ways to do it, and one if slightly easier to enable or install than the other. Finally: i agree with your list, although for a few of your problems, they created the acronym "RTFM" :-) cheers.

I own a classic 1985 535i. Owned it since 2001 and still does not need brake pads replacement. If you do the repairs yourself you save a TON of money. Parts are not more expensive than a Toyota and I doubt Toyota parts last 25 years or more as they do on my car. I just replaced the water pump, the original one. About 300K miles on original engine, more fun to drive and has better acceleration than many new cars. Very reliable and cheap to own....yes from time to time I have to replace things like the radiator, battery, hoses,...etc. but overall, more reliable than most other cars and a lot more fun.

When that happens to cars who ever bought it from you just had their day made. Usually after 60k everything COULD break. It is the first service period and you did all the work. Now the new owner will probably have no issues. It is nail biting but every time I buy a used car I spend about $800-1,500 within the first month and then maybe one thing a year after that. 60k, 120k, and 180k are major intervals for all cars.

How's your cooling system doing? Usually a low coolant warning is an indicator of a failing cooling system. Probably a leaking expansion tank. Usually around the age of your car a cooling system refresh needs to be done as a preventative measure. Usually this includes replacing belts, hoses, thermostat, expansion tank, sometimes water pump. Might want to look into it if you haven't already. In the long scheme of things as far as BMW maintenance goes this is relatively inexpensive. Usually under $300 for the parts and easy enough that you and a friend could get it done in a few hours. If you are ever in a pinch and need coolant immediatly. You can either get some from the dealer or buy Zerex G05. Zerex G05 is the same as the BMW coolant (Zerex makes BMW coolant The only difference is that the Zerex coolant is yellow and BMW is blue. Really have to be careful with cooling issues on these cars. It doesn't take long to blow the head gasket on these engines. Sometimes just minutes of overheating. Yeah cup holders are always an after thought in BMWs. Germans don't eat or drink in their cars. They smoke cigarettes in them though. Go figure :) I have an E46 and there are only 2 cup holders and one of them is under the arm rest.

I own a 330xd e90 and after checking out wheels options I upgraded to 18" also ( BBSs ) for my summer wheels. However, after talking to several BMW specialists I chose 225/40/18 ( non-RF ) for all four wheels to avoid stress on the X-Drive systems. Still, during this winter I had the original 17" rims with 225/45 RF winter tiers ( GoodYear for front and Continental for back ) and it wrecked the X-Drive in about 10.000 km ( the mechanical parts in the central diff ). Based on my experience, I would advise you have a chat with a BMW dealership so you avoid a similar headache because of different specs in tires.

The mpg gauge is accurate, if you were traveling at that same speed with the same fuel consumption you can easily calculate current mpg. Takes a lot more energy to accelerate than to coast so when accelerating that is why it says 12mpg, and 60mpg when you are coasting assuming you can keep that speed with the same amount of work needed to drive the car. i dont have a bmw but i do have a g37, and the bar too goes up and down depending on how hard i am accelerating, its still useful to help choose the best gas throttle to accelerate efficiently without slowing people behind you as much

I bought a 2006 325xi in January. Craigslist $4800, incredible steal. Should have been nearly twice that. The runflats had been replaced, but my pedantic BMW buddy says no on those anyway. As far as cupholders? Yes, the two pop-outs in the dash are trouble--but there's a refrigerated holder inside the armrest and two that pop out of the rear armrest when it's folded out from the back seat--close enough to reach. The computer monitoring of everything takes some time to learn--especially since it had no owners manual.

Keep in mind BMW coolant is concentrate. The dealer also gave me 10% off with just asking so I paid $22.39 plus tax. Add a dollar for distilled water and you have 2 gallons with a 50/50 mix. Zerex G-05 would be the closest and $18.00 for concentrate at most part stores. I think if you dig a bit deeper into the vehicle maker formulary requirements, the coolant debate is way over blown and you would be fine with sticking with a same same formula (HOAT for BMW) however BMW coolant for a little over $4 more is a no brainer and will reduce selection anxiety. If you own a BMW, buy a gallon so your not forced to buy aftermarket when in needed due to the dealership being closed.

I have an e90 325i and I also share your sentiments about the dipstick and cup holders. I would also add that, my passenger cup holder, the one that comes strait out has stopped popping out when pressed. Additionally, the passenger seat occupancy sensor has failed, resulting in either a $155 seat mat replacement (not happening) or buying a dummy sensor box off amazon so that the airbag does actually deploy in all situations instead ($80 seems like a steal at this point). I have 98k miles and also have replaced the thermostat due to it being stuck open ($200? or so). The valve cover is leaking oil, not much, quarter of a quart in 5k miles, and also and will need to be replaced.

I've found a great solution for cupholder problems in any car. If it's 2.5 inch opening for the cup for example buy a PVC connector reducer/expander that will increase the diameter from 2.5 to 3 inches for example. Then you can make the expander taller with a piece of three inch pipe. Use epoxy glue on the pvc pipe. Get the PVC parts that get the best fit possible. Then spray paint the cupholder you've made to the color you desire. To make the part fit its best buy sticky rubber 8x11 sheets made of many colors from any craft store for about $2 and wrap that sticky paper around the base to get a nice tight fit. I keep a variety of holders in my trunk buddy depending on the shape needed. Using a PVC tee you can expand a single cup holder into a dual one as well. Also if you really want to be efficient buy a cup that you like that fits your design the best and pour your drinks into that cup. Realize it is impossible to make an inexpensive cup holder designed to hold the thousands of types of cups people like to use. So in the end unless you luck out and you want to drink beverages while you drive invest a little time with PVC and make the perfect holder for that car. One cup holder costs less than $10 to make before your labor. And then sit back and enjoy. Expect to get a lot of comments and requests for you to make one for your passengers car. It could be a good little business.

Wipers are extremely easy to use and I would honestly suggest looking at owner's manual to familiarize yourself with all of functions and how to use. German engineers make the best and to operate the best it requires best parts so yes more expensive antifreeze will be required. But then again please find a BMW with a cracked head gasket at 50,000 miles like happened to me on my grand prix. Old saying goes you get what you pay for and this definitely is the case with cars as well.

Good vid. My '01 Mercedes C320 (w203) doesn't have a dipstick either. There's a pipe coming up from the oil pan where the dealership pumps the oil out for an oil change (I just drain it from the bottom). I've seen an aftermarket dipstick online that replaces the cap on that pipe. It was around $80 though! You may be able to find something like that for your car and considering BMW has a much larger aftermarket it may be cheaper.

That instant mpg gauge might be more accurate than you think. The Olds Aurora that I used to drive had a digital one. Unless you drive like a total granny (which I actually tend do), seeing it dip down close to or below 10 while accelerating from a stop was not unusual. Foot on the floor will yield a solid 1 ;). It would shoot up past the max reading of 99, while coasting from cruising speed. Check what that gauge is sitting at while cruising on the freeway.

Cruising on the freeway the gauge stays around 30mpg which i guess is fairly accurate but freeway driving accounts for like 5% of my driving lol

Trust me, the fact that you cannot physically check the oil is a consideration for NOBODY when buying a car. It is something you might find curious or whatever, but it is not like 'god, I really wanted that car soo badly - but shame, no dipstick, no purchase...' That literally never happens.

I like this dude! He reminds me of Alyson Hannigan in American Pie. "This one time at band camp............". I bet he is wild AF! I love when I see textbook white looking people that don't look like they would be into hip hop music!

Justin Buice I'm serious bro. Shit is like National Geographic to me. I pissed my pants when I found out about Ben Folds covering "Bitches Aint Shit" by Dre and Snoop! Good info about the car by the way. I sent it to my lil brother cause he is thinking about buying one!

100% agree with every item you mention. Especially the waste of instrument space on the mpg dial.

the instant mpg is acurate,when you hit the gas it goes to 12 because it is using more fuel to acccelerate,when you slow down,engine is usinng far less fuel,so it goes to 50+,and it's called instant mpg because it show's you the mpg at the moment,and it's actualy usefull when you want to set your speed on a low fuel consuption.windscreen wiper is also easy to use...

The wipers are pretty easy to control. I've got a 2000 model 3 series. Basically there are 3 wiper settings going up. The dial on the stalk is useful in the 1st setting. It adjusts the speed of the wiper to deal with light showers that are a bit too heavy for the base L1 setting but too light for the L2 setting. It has one down setting (ie below the neutral or wiper off position) that moves the wipers once only then goes back to the off position.

I like my instant MPG gauge... it's a L/100km gauge, but does the same thing. It allows me to understand the fuel consumption of my car under different conditions. Maybe it's different on mine because it's diesel, but I keep an eye on that thing a lot...

Real time MPG shows the driver how different driving styles can immediately effect fuel consumption. It's a fantastic way to promote economical driving.
