It's so interesting to see what items people keep. I have clothing for over 15 years. The pieces are still in great shape and none were expensive. Truly believe the quality of clothing has drastically declined. We need to pay a good penny for just a little quality and it still only gives you a few years. ☹

My mom bought me my first piece of real gold jewelry when I was 16 or 17. I didn’t realize at the time what a generous gift it was. Two decades later, I am still finding new ways to wear it and style it. I love that it makes me think of my mom every time I wear it.

I have several items in my wardrobe that are over 20 years old. I have learned that if I buy quality, classic and comfortable items in natural fabrics and solid colours (no pattern) I will wear them until they fall apart.

When I was a working girl in NYC in the 1990s I bought a simple, lined black wool skirt at a boutique in the Bronx near my apartment. It is unadorned, fit me perfectly, perfect length for me. I wore it for decades and will be wearing it again once I get a small tear fixed in the slit on the back hem. That's more than 25 years of wearing this skirt. It's just a foundational piece. I also got the cutest crochet top at that shop that I wore until it fell apart.

Things I've kept: a pearl necklace from my Dad on my 16th birthday; a gold locket from my Mom; a gold signet pinkie ring from my Mom; an amethyst broach which belonged to my Grandma; my Louie bag, a college graduation gift; my black Lord & Taylor sling backs (resoled twice); a red wool blazer (YSL) which was my Mom's; 501 Levi's; my engagement party lace dress (now divorced & 25 lbs heavier) sentimental; Converse sneakers (I've collected 11prs in different colors & patterns & wear with everything/personal style choice) and finally a gray wool chesterfield coat with blk velvet lapels I bought myself with my very first after college paycheck 30yrs ago. It's too tight, but I smile every time I unzip the garmet bag it's in... felt so grown up & stylish & confident 😎! It was amazing and the most expensive thing I owned.

More than half my closet is 6 years or older! I have one sweatshirt that's 20 years old in great condition. I'm shocked when I hear YT'ers claim that an article of clothing is old if they've only had it for 1 year. I've been going through a style journey and I do have some pieces that are newer and I'll wear them for many years. Thank you for sharing these items!

I bought my first cashmere sweater on ebay last year after watching your videos. I always liked the look and feel of cashmere sweater, but never bought one as I live in Houston and the winter is not cold enough to wear cashmere often. But as you shared your experience that you tasted water by purchasing one on ebay, It makes good sense to me. I found a beautiful light pink Ralph Lauren cashmere sweater on ebay for only $25. . It was almost new , no pill at all, fits me perfectly, light weight and super soft. I love it and have worn it every time when the temperature went below 50F. My husband saw me enjoy it so much, he surprised me by buying a brand new red cashmere sweater for me as new year gift! Now I have two cashmere sweaters and they mean something special for me. I am sure I will be wearing them for years to come.

Things I've had for 6+ years: most of my clothing, tbh. One of the oldest is a broomstick skirt from Walmart circa 1998. It's totally synthetic, and the fit isn't the most flattering, but the colors are the best representation of fall I've ever seen. It sparks SO much joy and I've worn it at least once a year since then. Last fall I paired a blouse with it that I'd never tried before, so there are still new things to be done with it!

My ultimate basic that I never tire of and always replace with its nearest cousin" a simple black below-the-knee skirt. Never anything too narrow, an a-line suits me and is comfortable to walk in. It is suitable for visiting a Mosque or a date night or a business meeting. Can't live without it! Love your content.

I love your advice to pay attention to what you’re drawn to vs. trying to convince yourself to like something. Thanks for the inspiration! ✨

It’s easier for wools, silks, and good jewelry to last a long time. The challenge is finding warm weather clothing that will last. Like you, I’m in South Carolina and live mostly in linen and cotton. After a few years, the fabrics really fade…even in good quality pieces. I’ve had beige linen that looked so tired after four or five years, so it’s not just a color issue.

And let's be honest, if you live in a hot climate, you SWEAT. No amount of careful cleaning is going to keep that item looking pristine for years and years. (If there's a secret to this, I am all ears!) I'm in Virginia, and the amount of 90+ degree days puts me in the same boat. I end up having to create fashionable outfits out of performance sports and hiking gear... or just accept that my cotton and linen items won't last past 3 years.

I have had two wool blazer and a bow tie blouse for 40 years (I am 57). My parents had the blouse custom-made (bespoke) and the blazer was by a high-end designer and they still fit. They instilled good taste in me from an early age. The navy blue blazer is precisely the short style (to the waist) that we can see in Winter 2022-23 collections, and the other one is a classic black blazer.

I’ve got lots of things that I’ve had for more than 20 years! They tend not to be so-called classics as I find that shapes and silhouettes for classics change but one off special pieces that I have never fallen out of love with and which transcend major shifts in fashion and style because they are unique.

I really enjoyed this walk through your 6 years plus pieces you love. I have a pair of, wait for it, gold sequined Adidas. And you’d think they’d be too much … they are not! They are almost a neutral, albeit a very fun one. I’ve worn them with every possible outfit, including a gown when I hurt my foot! They are getting a bit worn, and since I found them in Paris in 2015 … a replacement is not likely. I will never throw them away. They will forever be a part of my wardrobe … even if they become my housekeeping shoes! ❤️

For me, almost anything vintage or antique is timeless. For example, if you find a 1950s dress that fits you and flatters you, or a Victorian cameo, you’ll have them forever and they’ll always be in style. 😊

I have a cream zip-up cardigan in my wardrobe that was bought many years ago as part of my first-ever work-wear wardrobe. It's got a shawl collar that can be zipped right up into a turtleneck style, and I still wear and love it, despite its age. It still looks as good as it did when I bought it, which is amazing considering it's acrylic rather than being wool or cashmere or any other natural fibre. I probably (definitely!) have other things in my wardrobe that are equally old because I've never bought anything with the intention of wearing it and then discarding it. Everything I've bought has been with the intention of keeping them for as long as possible, so even if I buy from fast-fashion brands (mainly because they're cheap and I haven't always had the money to spend to buy something pricier), I've bought with more of a slow fashion mentality - and no, I've never sought to maintain a capsule wardrobe, or to become a minimalist. I have to say, though, that I appreciate everything I've learned from you and others about building and maintaining a capsule wardrobe, so I think my own wardrobe is slowly becoming more of a capsule, as I like the idea of everything going with everything else rather than just having one top that goes with one pair of trousers.

Things that I've had for over 6 years...too many to count, really! But among them, favorites would be: camel coat, beige trench coat, black straight-leg pants, navy cigarette pants, white linen shirt, black pointy toe ankle boots, cognac riding boots, seersucker blazer, white cotton-linen blazer, navy silk sheath, deep red cashmere turtle neck, and black leather zippered-top tote bag. All of these things have been in my closet for at least 10 years.

I've kept many of my items from the 70s, 80s, 90s, etc and I'm so glad I did. Ignore the people who say to get rid of something if you haven't worn it in a year (or 3, or 5, or whatever arbitrary "rule" they make up). Not only do most things eventually come back in style (hello again acid-washed jeans I last wore 30 years ago!), if it makes you happy just to look at it and touch it once a year, that's enough.

@@roomofmirrorsbest Hello, apologies for the delayed response. That is a difficult question to answer since I collect from here and there and sometimes even thrift However, for everyday wear, I love my trousers from Massimo dutti and Mango(always check the fabric tag). H&M also have good ones sometimes but I personally have not purchased one. If I am talking about shirts and tops, I totally love basic and neutrals and I have few from Armani, Isabel marant, Burberry and Lacoste for polos and few of my daily wear, i thrifted and how lucky for me, I thrifted a Chanel knitted top and wow, I wear it atleast once a week Regardless of the brands, the material/fabric is mostly to be considered while purchasing and since I am from a relatively hot climate place, I go for linens and cotton.

I grew up with poor quality shoes, so 3-4 years ago when I bought myself a pair of genuine leather flat black ankle boots, I had no idea I'd still be wearing them today. Now I need to educate myself on how best to clean and take care of them, but I will never go back to buying $20 shoes again. I also have a cream colored thin knit sweater that I've had for probably 12 years that I just pulled out the other day and paired with a midi skirt. I also have a Navy blue jacket, but from Talbot's with gold buttons. I have had it for years, I can't believe it still looks good and still fits. I will never ever get rid of it. I have light weight wool slacks from Talbot's that are pin tucked. They still look good and I will continue to wear them, although I had put them away for several years when pin tucked pleated trousers weren't in style. I had a Corporate job and had to look professional, so most of my clothing was expensive and has lasted. Unfortunately there are pieces I had to get rid of because, well, I am just not a size 4 or 6 anymore and never will be. I have several silk scarves that will always be in my wardrobe and several delicate gold pieces of jewelry my husband gifted to me that are perfect 20 years later. I have only started to purchase fast fashion during Covid. It is serving it's purpose and I do not feel bad if I have to discard them when the style or wear of them is gone. I have a lot of fast fashion Summer tops that I have cleaned out of my closet and each time I look at them, I say, "What was I thinking?" LOL (I am saving to donate when the weather warms up.)

GREAT VIDEO! I love my "old" classic pieces that never go out of style! I think when a woman knows what best suits her body and personality---changing style really does not dictate---except to up-date what is already in her wardrobe, because it is still all about what best suits her body and personality! When you buy good quality garments to begin with---they are more than worth the years of comfort, wear, and satisfaction you get from them. This my mother taught me from early on. Years before the "skinny jean" was popular, I came across a pair of black sweat pants with a tapered leg---and fell in love! It was perfect for my body type and personality, and I still have them today---they look so classic and not at all like sweatpants! PERFECT for cold northern weather, when even Springtime can still be cold. When it is appropriate, I even wear certain pieces untill they are literally thread-bare before I actually discard them, or save them to use as a pattern to have made over! They are like old and faithful friends I can't part with!

They finally taught me that I needed to quit buying vermeil and just save for solid gold pieces I truly love that would be carefree and last like those two chains. I may have fewer pieces, but the ones I have I can put on and leave on and not worry about taking them off to shower or swim, and I know they will last a lifetime and beyond.

Hi Audrey, Really enjoyed your video,... I love how thinking things thru as you do makes so much sense, and also makes the most of ones time and efforts, when planning a wardrobe. You speak of a variety of items, yet in each case they are valuable as a distinct part of your wardrobe. Very cool!! Mahalo, mililani ❤️

As I started writing this, I thought I would be talking about one pair of boots. But then I kept remembering more and more items that I have had for many years, some for more than 4 decades! Those would be the designer silk or cotton scarves I purchased in London the summer I was 16 yo, plus a beautiful dark brown leather clutch with a real suede lining. I have a pair of hand-stitched cognac leather tassel loafers from about 1990. The boots I was thinking of are from the late 90s. I actually needed a pair of warm winter boots, but I fell in love with these unlined leather ones and bought them instead. Never regretted it. They have been to the shoemaker's a couple of times for resoling, etc. but they will be with me forever. Two coats I have, circa 1990, a dark green trench coat, and a double-breasted navy wool overcoat. My basic belt is a reversable brown / black one I have had for 15 years.

I have this black velvet embroidered blazer that I’ve had for 10 years now. When I originally purchased it, it was a huge spurge, even though it was 2nd hand. Still, every time it’s part of my outfit someone compliments it. When I’m wearing it, it feels so me! It’s a piece that’s classic, and I know I still have many years left.

I love my Bvlgari zero 1. Got the first set in year 2000. lol quiet a long time ago. Like you said, I kept on being gravitated to it, so as years go by, I collected more items from this collection. I really love every single piece I own and wear them often. I put on one set yesterday to a house concert performed by Jesse Blumberg. You might know him. NY times commented he is a golden toned baritone. He really is! I feel so blessed to be able to see him perform in person.

Thank you for sharing Audrey ✨ i have a dark purple alpaka coat with a silk lining which I bought around 10 years ago. It was half prize but still more than I ever payed for clothing and back then a bit too small. I have worn it very often and in day to day situations eventhough it is very chic. It still looks like new, no signs that it has been worn at all.

I admire how intentional you are about the items you invest in! Your talk about shoes reminded me about your video where you show how to recognize quality construction in shoes; that video was so helpful, as are all of your videos! ❤️ To change up the button color on your navy blazer, you could always try finding a button cover to fit overtop of it; that way, you can change the appearance whenever you want! Or you could always sew on a new button and save the gold one for when you want back again.🤗

I have two pairs of shoes that are now more than ten years old and that I still wear (sometimes more often in certain years than others): a pair of brown leather Born lace-up brogues that look great with ankle pants and jeans and a slightly slouchy pair of black leather heeled boots. I regularly moisturize, polish, and waterproof leather footwear, and I keep the boots stuffed with old socks and magazines to maintain the shape. I think I'll have these for a while yet. Great video! Thank you!

I've got a purple cardigan in an age 13-14 that is now at least 15yrs old! It originally had a fur trim on but I removed that and now use it as a basic cardigan. I don't wear it as much as I would like to but that is mainly because up until recently purple wasn't a colour I'd buy very often but I have since learnt it really suits me so the cardigan will be out much more once I'm back in normal post pregnancy clothes again :). I also have a camisole from the 1910s that has been passed down through the generations that can still be worn today however it has started to take on a yellowish hue and needs the straps replacing so that is something on my to-do list to get it back up to scratch again!

I only buy fine jewelery on ebay. The safe way to do it is to look for makes you can find in shops in your area and that you can recognize from photos. Unlike vintage bags, they are truly precious and the prices are lower than New not higher.

Audrey, this was super helpful. I own a pair of slightly wide, slightly cropped slacks and the light 💡 bulb just turned on. Why am I waiting to wear them to an “event”? The fabric is so light I can wear them with a simple bit of styling duh 🙄. It’s so hot where I live I forget to even think about black slacks. Lol. Your favorite items are beautiful and you’re so right prices are a lot higher now. I’m learning patience and I just started shopping thrift in my area to find nicer shoes. Happy Sunday 😎🌵🤎

Hello Audrey, your videos are really enjoying and I bend towards your style more. As year goes by the style you choose is more classy and fashionable rather than any new trendz. The colour palette is gr8 and because it's on a safe side, one can really invest in good quality and be minimal at the same time. I really appreciate your videos 👍 in experimenting and building my wardrobe.

Ironically the things that have lasted the longest in my closet are synthetic. I have a 10 year old faux leather jacket, and I love it and wear it to death. Every time I put that thing on, I get so many compliments, especially from the gf, she must like the bad girls lol But the other thing was a pair of 10 dollar faux suede soft ankle boots I got when I still shopped at Walmart. They've lasted for over 5 years and only now are nearing their end and that's only because I've abused them in winter. I would say it's how you take care of things that counts, but for me it's pure dumb luck. I thrift everything these days cept the delicates , and I've found some real hopefully life long treasures. I really appreciate the things you've taught me about fabric and construction, they're invaluable.

Wow, you're lucky. I've never gotten more than two years out of anything faux leather (always peels, or goes sticky, or just disintegrates). I've had good luck with other synthetics though (e.g., acrylic sweaters).

Love your style and advice, Audrey. Its so interesting listening to you because our styles are quite different but there's also many overlaps :) I have had SO many pieces in my wardrobe for a long time that I still love and will continue to wear for as long as I can. Probably the most notable are my cowboy boots. I'm much more of a boots person than shoes, and my Dan Post cowboy boots are 26 years old! They get better with age; I love them so much and wear them easily once a week, all year round. I have a pair of Frey Vera boots that are almost 10 years old and they're regular go-to's, as are my Frye Harness boots. Both my Frye's were pre-loved bargains; in new condition but for a fraction of the new price. A black leather biker jacket is another regularly reached for piece which is probably 15 years old, plus a beautiful black cashmere blend coat with faux fur collar that I was GIFTED (it looks great with anything). I have two denim jackets (one 3/4 sleeve and one full sleeve) that are 20 years old and I've never seen any other denim jacket as perfect for me (and they were both on sale!). I've never regretted buying higher quality boots or coats - they pay you back with years of faithful wear!

This is such a great video! A lot of things I’ve owned have been passed along or donated due to size fluctuations from having a kids, but some things I’ve have for multiple years are: - Barbara Bixby jewelry that my mom gave me 15 years ago.. the “Algerian love knot” necklace that BB designed for “Casino Royale”. - Semi-precious stones necklaces that I got at Middle East shops in Seattle when I was a teen/ young adult. I love a good gemstone necklace made of Aventurine or Jade. - a denim jacket that I thrifted 15 years ago and still wear as a layering piece - heavy Chico metal boho belts. I love throwing them over dresses for a boho chic look - silk scarves & pashmina scarves ... I wear a scarf nearly every day! - hats.... I have wool cloche hats, floppy sun hats, and wide fedoras. My most expensive one was a $150 Lack of Color (Australian wool) that I thrifted for $80. The one I’ve had longest is a study Safari/ Adventurer hat that I got at Disneyland from the Indiana Jones ride, 15 years ago.

Worn over a minimal dress I look like no one else and with an hourglass figure they bring in too.large waists.

When I was 15 to 20 I was fortunate to receive several high quality gifts, I didn´t realize then how precious they were. Some of them I kept and I still use: a pair of cashmere cardigans, one orange-brown and one wine colored, a pair of gold pendant earrings, a black baby alpaca long coat I bought in a trip to Peru, among others. All of these I-ve had for more than 20 years, they still look great! Audrey, I would love to know where you bought that cream and black sweater you are wearing around min 9.
