I wish someone would have told me to go out and buy 3-5 greyscale copics to start. You can create a full piece with those, and even though the color might be boring, it's the best, inexpensive way to try them out for the first time, rather than spending a bunch of money on a large set and having a bunch of colors I didn't have a use for.

My copic tip thing for beginners: keep a color chart. copic has a free one with all the colors. it helps to know what the colors look like on paper before using them and can keep track of the colors you have when you buy more

I just wanted to mention that I am not a native speaker (wow you don't say 😂😂) and sometimes I make big mistakes in pronouncing words, it happens. Crazy fact: I made all the videos for this and the next month (6 videos) withing one day (cutting, editing, voice over, add *suitable* music, export, upload, doing thumbnails, upload, editing the description box etc. lots of work)!!! Yepp only one day before having my flight to Thailand 😂😂 I was super stressed and had less than 3 hours of sleep that night. It's possible that more mistakes show up but I just want to say thank you for your patience bc it seems that people are bothered of me saying especially "suitable" wrong. I am sorry. I'm not perfect but I'm always working on it ✌🌼 Thank you for so much for all your feedback, it's so interesting to read your copic stories and tipps - it's inspiring ❤ Btw I'm currently writing you from Thailand hue hue 😆 I upload some impressions of my trip on instagram @Rambulicious 👈 follow me there if you want to see cute animals, food, Thai culture and more 🇨🇷

sanablue1 it's more like a sort of eraser! If you accidentally color a tiny bit out of the lines with alcohol based markers, you can use the colorless blender to get the color much lighter. you can also use it to get very cool effects with your copic markers. colorless blenders are basically just rubbing alcohol in a marker haha here's a link for a good colorless blender tutorial thingy ~ kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qcCTf9OL3pi8mHk.html

I have a tip for using Copics. When you buy markers, buy a few that could go in a color palette together, so you don't have a bunch of colors that don't look good together. Also, if you want to use alcohol markers, you can put down a base coat of marker and shade with colored pencils. That's what I do because it costs less.
@craftybit

Hi! Love your video! However a little warning, rubbing alcohol will ruin you copics so never use that instead of the colourless blender solution. The colourless blending solution contains a organic alcohol while the rubbing alcohol (or isopropanol) is a chemical alcohol. The chemical alcohol reacts differently with the pigments in the inks and cause your pens to clump up. So even tho cleaning the outside of your barrel with rubbing alcohol is totally fine never clean your nibs or refill your pens with it. Just a little warning, but thank you for sharing your beautiful art :)

1- always buy refills and keep your "old and dry" copics 2- Buy the right paper 3- You can mix your markers and use mix media (prisma, copics, color pencils...) just try it first. 4- Blenders= your best friend.

Copic markers are mainstream? O_o You are kidding me. Here in my country, copic markers are dream of every anime fan who love drawing. It is so hard to obtain them, not to mention the paper and their price. 😣 Normal people do not even know such markers exist here. 😑

I understand. But it still shocked me. I had no idea about existence of copic markers as kid. :D Same about anime and manga. :( I first learn about anime when I was sixteen years old. I tryed learn to draw pictures in same way but I did not understand how to do it or what kind of technique use. I saw copic markers for first time with my own eyes in my 22. I finally bought some last year and got right paper from my girlfriend this year at my 27th birthday. So hearing that kid through about copic markers as mainstream sound like from different dimension. :D

+Erik Nailo I only saw a lot of artists using them, praising them etc. I thought like everybody got them. I was like: colored pencils are cheaper and if you can handle this medium it makes you special. Not mainstream. Plus I don't wanted my parents spend money for it. There are always several reasons why somebody thought different in the past. I was just 12 I'm soon 27 😂 Now most of my money goes just for food and copics since 8 years ✌

When I used Copics with large areas, I like to mix in watercolours (Winsor Newton). I use a bristol paper, I use Strathmore, put down my washes and make sure my paper does not buckle by taping in down and not using a lot of water. Then I go over with the Copics and surprisingly the watercolours don't activate very much if the paper is not saturated with the paint. I am very mixed media so my markers would last longer and the paint is more light fast than the markers so washes don't loose too much of their vibrancy over time. And also you can do watercolour effects and go over with the Copics which is nice to do. 😄

When I started with copics, I wish I knew more about pens and fineliners and all. Short version of this long story I'm bout to tell: do adequate research first! I started out using microns, cuz those were the pens I saw artist's using all the time and they weren't super expensive or anything. Plus, when a lot of people do art supply giveaways, they give copics with microns. So I figured they were the right pens for the job. But I didn't know that the microns weren't copic-proof. Anytime it smudged I assumed it was because the ink wasn't dry yet. It took me a while to realize. But thankfully I did most of that smudging when I was using my less expensive brushmarkers (I started with the Windsor and Newton ones) so when I moved on to copics I had already figured to just not color over the ink. I still messed up a lot though. But eventually I decided to look it up and switched to different fineliners. I use LePen now, but since they only come in black, I use the colorful copic multiliners too. Also, I like having different sizes of fineliners too. I normally use .1, .3, and .5 (occasionally a .05 for really small details) but it gives your work a lot more dimension than just using one size. I bought some deleter ink to try it out (with the g-pen and all) but I dunno. I like to line my work in different colors (like use the brown liner on brown hair, and blue liner on blue shirt. Thats the way I like to do it) so I dunno if I'd wanna go back to lining my arts only in black. We'll see though
@raapyna8544
@raapyna8544 6 жыл бұрын
Adriane Miller There are coloured dip inks, but I assume they are a bit more expensive than black. And some paints might work, like guash maybe? Can someone confirm if guash works with a G-pen and copics? But you should look around for different options and maybe if they're not too expensive, buy a little of one colour first to test.
@awsum_adri
@awsum_adri 6 жыл бұрын
Rääpynä whaaaaa? I didn't even think about colored inks being a thing!!! I kinda gave up on the thought cuz I've only ever seen them in black and white. But If they are a thing I hope they have a bunch of colors and they're all copic proof, I'd buy em all 😁😁😁

I recently git the ohuhu markers for my birthday, and im so happy that im trying alcohol based markers!, but I was saving for copics, i really love drawing but my mom doesnt understand the use for more markers because i have the ohuhu, i do understand her point of view, and shes right in a sense that if you keep practicing then you will get really good and you wont need fancy art supplies to showcase talent! So at the moment I am working on getting good! Instead of buying them too young I can get good first and I think its a good thing my mom sees the simplacity of just art! It helps me see that I dont need fancy stuff to be good :) i just thought i would share! (Though copics are litterally my dream art supply 😍)

I'm 22 and working a good job in software development, and I recently made a deliberate choice to buy an Ohuhu set over Copics after a lot of research :) Ohuhu are really good to get a feel for alcohol markers and will give you an excellent base set of colors to start with. Listening to others who own both Ohuhu and Copic, apparently the quality of the brush nibs are very similar. Try watching side by side videos of Ohuhu and Copic too - a lot of the time the difference is almost negligible! Using this base set you can start to learn which colors you like, how to layer and blend different colors to make new colors and learn a bit more about color theory - all things you need to know before diving into choosing a small set of copics if you still feel you'd like to have them. What I have done over time is supplement my base Ohuhu collection with one or two choice alcohol markers as I find I need them (Copic or Winsor Newton) - for example I wanted a paler couple of colors for skin tones and some pastels, so I yesterday I bought a couple of W&N brushmarkers individually that were 40% off at my local art store :) Ohuhu are not refillable (sad) but I have heard excellent things about their customer service. Apparently if you send the empty marker to them they will send you a new one in the same color for free - I am looking forward to doing this myself once I run my Ohuhus dry! Good luck

Totally agree on the Deleter ink :) I use black 4, and it makes such lovely crisp lines, and is completely water and alcohol proof when dry. Get a cheap Speedball dip pen nib holder and Nikko G-pen nib to use it with. I also just got a big pad of Borden & Riley Paris paper, which so far seems superior to Bristol for markers. It's a bit thinner, but still fairly heavy (the listed pound weight is the same, but not all papers use the same definition of a pound). The ink does still go through to the other side, but doesn't bleed outward as much as it does on Bristol.

@uwulysses
@uwulysses 6 жыл бұрын
You'll be fine. The only difference between the ciao marker and the sketch (I think that's what OP is referring to, unless they mean the copic originals) is that the sketch comes in more colours, holds a bit more ink, and can be used with the copic airbrush system- but I have seen people manage to get ciao markers to fit into the airbrush with a bit of work. The sketch markers also have the colour code on the cap, but in terms of function, they work the same as ciaos, so if you're starting with copic ciao markers, you've got nothing to worry about. If OP was referring to copic original markers, those have a square barrel, hold more ink than the sketch and ciao, and come with a chisel and a bullet nib (as opposed to the brush and chisel on the sketch and ciao). So if they'd gotten those instead of ciao or something, then the lack of a brush could have been an issue, but I don't know what exactly their situation was, so I'm not going to keep speculating or whatever.
@aqua490
@aqua490 6 жыл бұрын
As far as I know there aren't many differences. 1) Ciaos are round, these are square shaped 2) Original copics hold more ink just like the Sketch 3)Whole range of 358 colours, while the Ciaos are available in 180 colours (72 set A(or 36 a and B) and 72B( or 36 C and D)plus 36 set E) 4)I guess this is the difference Hanae was going for: The Originals *don't have a brush nib* , so you better purchase Sketch or Ciaos if you want that nib ^^ You could replace the bullet nib with a brush nib, but I wouldn't recommend that bc it would be still pricey unless you get the Originals for (almost )free. So no worries if you bought Ciaos, I have them and a few Sketch and they are totally worth it :D I hope, I could help you ^^

CrimzonStarz95x ciaos have less ink and are less pricey while the copic sketch markers or the classic ones have more ink,are refillable and umm...have more colours than the ciaos so don't worry bout it,it's not that much of a difference,doesn't make the quality less better

Thanks for a video about this! I've really counted on your videos about copics to help with the art markers learning curve! Your videos and your artwork are a daily inspiration. See you next live stream! ❤ P.S. The tip I have is really just building on one of your own. That is... Make a color chart with your markers! Devote (at least) a page of your sketchbook to testing your markers! Test how they look at one, two, and three layers of ink and LABEL THE COLOR! A color chart actually makes a GREAT first page for your sketchbook. It gets that feeling of need for perfection out of the way, and it's a reminder that, hey! this is an experiment. As the Frizz always said, Take chances, make mistakes, get messy! And most of all, have fun. 🤗

I don't know if this helps but with me I tend to only use the brush end and I found it's better to store the markers downwards towards the end of the end of the marker you use the most

I have been using copics for a while, but I always like to hear these sorts of things just in case there is some tip I have missed over the years. I love the illustration we got to watch come together in this episode a lot, by the way-- the girl's stuffed bunny is so cute, and the background and feel of the lighting is really beautiful! The one thing I wish I knew when I bought my first markers was the code for the colors and which ones would blend-- I bought them as singles at the art store near me back when I was in college, and I just tried to eyeball a good trio, but of course they weren't all the exact same line...

I dont know why I did this still but my first three copics were a dark rich blue and a dark brown..oh and a skin tone. Dark colors. "Oh no big deal its just the start of my collection" happy oblivious me said I made a picture to practice when I got home and used the terrible color scheme and everything was so d a r k layering thw colors made them look black i rarely RARELY used those and ever since ive learned to pick lighter colors to layer up on to get better effects. I wish I knew that when I started off...also the skin tone wasnt the best to use as a base for every character I had haha... I still have the blue and brown though, rarely using them I still havent run out of ink

One thing I wish I knew was that there were some people on YT that used copic and DIDN'T do anime style. I never wanted to draw like that, but my style geared a bit in that direction because I found nothing else to watch. I'm glad now that I've found YT's doing more semi-realistic styles and other comic styles, it gives me so much inspiration to see the VARIETY!

A tip if using non-marker paper. Use the colourless blender to wet the area you're working on and this makes it easier to put colour on the paper without too much ink being absorbed. XxxxX

You´re welcome. Oh my thank you so much for noticing it Ö//Ö! Yes, yes I drew it :) A bit more personalized because the old one was taken a few years back from the internet :) Probably I will draw one more to see what I want to keep :) Yes! Marker paper can be really thin, but I have found one that is pretty good. Its called "The perfect coloring paper" Its thicker than the usual marker paper, but still really smooth!

Rambutan Illustration just wanted to point out that marker paper can be thick,if u buy xpress it blending card or even copic marker paper,it will have the thickness and saturation(stuff like that) written on it so just try some and choose the one suitable for your art style

It's incredible how perfect you blend the skin tones! I am still working on that, even though I use the Copic marker paper, the colors get suck right into the paper, they dry extremely fast and I don't have a second to blend anything.

I really recommend learning the colour codes on the caps!!!! It is a fantastic system. Now I see only the code and I can imagine what colour it can be almost totally exactly!!! I wish i knew it before it makes it unbelievably easy to blend and find matching colours. :)

I like Micron Pigma pens for mine. Once in a while yellows (pesky yellows) will smear, but if you let them dry well, and maybe dab a kneaded eraser on the lines, they don't bleed.

I made the same mistake you did, I bought all Classic Copic markers when I started drawing and then I tried out the Ciao markers and was so mad that I had wasted my money on the Classics when the Ciao ones were much more suited to my taste! One of my biggest mistakes when I first started drawing was not waiting for the ink to dry before going over it. It took me a long time to realize that the color looks much different wet than dry!

when i colour with markers i always make sure that i colour an area in one go so to avoid having a join stain if stopped half way through. plus learn how to be quick with filling an arse to avoid ribbing. i use different types of paper i find that bristol paper has the least feathering when laying colour down other papers can be used as well i some times use cartridge paper but i never colour right up to the black out line as the marker ink can go over and then the picture can be ruined. i would say that i would ever really only ever need 60 colours max with markers plus allot of copics range you get colours where they are pretty much identical. this was a really great video by the way.

The moment I started to use colours from different colour families was the moment my art reached the next level :) the values improved a lot and I started to use the transparency of the colours to my advantage as well as colour theory but I think this takes time and if it is useful when you start out with copics depends on the art experience you gained beforehand :) but the most useful thing I learned is to experiment a lot to get the most of the medium you're using ^-^
