6 Things To Ask Before You Buy A Used Rolex

On this episode we discuss a bunch of things that you should know/ask before you purchase a used Rolex (or any used mechanical watch for that matter).
We discuss originality, lug thickness, polished vs unpolished, and much more. Keep in mind, this is just the tip of the iceberg as to what we can go into, there is a lot more to discuss.
I hope that this episode helps anyone who is considering a used vintage watch purchase.

I think i'ma step my watch game up to the Rolex Presidential Day Date watch they have out now. I started off in the watch game with Movado watches. My 1st watch purchase was the Movado Bold in gold. I love the way the light hits the watch bracelet.

All very important points...buying preowned or from auction houses can be an expensive experience ..Franken watches are commonplace and probably only an expert eye knows what has been replaced..always buy the dealer not the watch..

It always staggers me that someone may be prepared to pay as much (if not more!) as a 2nd hand car for a 2nd hand Rolex, without a "recent" Rolex service and associated papers to validate it as genuine! Doubt many would do the same with a car, no mater how old!!

Good points, Mike. I’d like to add that the 1530, 1520, 15xx, series of movements and newer are really well made, and don’t have parts that routinely wear out, like earlier movements do. The 1030 and earlier movements have parts that wear out, that are hard to find. That’s something to avoid, for most people.

spirg Cheapest used Rolex I’ve found locally was a Datejust and it was $8500.00

At 7K you could get some new ones. That’s getting into submariner territory. If you’re right at the cusp for upper tier rolexes it doesn’t make sense to go mid tier because some of the models are wonky and for a thousand more you could have a really impressive piece.

Yeah, I've asked those kind of questions for watches and jewellery in the past and recently, the seller told me not to bid on it 😂

As for question 2, that is most of the time impossible to answer. There’s no way to know if it was serviced by a skilled watchmaker and used genuine parts, unless you disassemble the watch which is costly and no seller will accept anyway. Better to assume it does not and pay accordingly. Spending much money on used Rolexes is idiotic to be honest, because of the reasons above, plus others.

Hi Mike, thanks for the comment. As to your questions, I think it depends on what you are buying and who you are buying from, as the saying goes with buying vintage Rolex, buy the seller, not the watch. A good seller, who is selling a vintage Rolex shouldn't take issue with a buyer asking for his watchmaker to inspect the watch. Also, if the watch is rare/valuable as many older Rolex watches are, the condition of the movement isn't as important as it being original. Like I said, it greatly depends on what you are buying and who you are buying from.
