My food plots did terrible this year compared to last, and it was a huge difference in deer activity. Next year i will be planting earlier and will need the weatherman to actually get it right with his forecast!!! Lol

Thank you for small parcel video, I have a 10 acre parcel in SC with neighbors that just grow timber trees and never there and I get lots of deer including couple nice 8 points this year, more day than night deer activity, so small parcels can still have great success when you have best food sources around

I love how you combine private and public land hunters in conjunction with your information, it really does shine a light on those questions of how can I improve this over looked peace that seems to hold deer. To me a small piece of land, be public or private is somewhere in the 100-250 acre parcel.

Lots of good info here. I am on my own 40 acres here in Western New York. Had this property for 35 yrs now. I just sat with Muzzel loader this afternoon in 14 degree weather. Saw nothing but feel good for trying. I passed on a bunch of little Bucks this yr. Still looking for a shooter. I may buy some Switchgrass seed next year. I hunt western Pennsylvania in high pressure areas and I was able to shoot a nice buck this year following your principles. My brother and a friend each shot a nice buck on public land! I’m interested in taking the how to design your deer hunting parcel class. I was curious if after the class do most of your clients feel confident in there own design? On the fb group do people share there property designs? Im nervous making lasting changes without someone looking over my plan. Thanks!

Can’t wait to watch this I have a BIG access issue I think and I think the past hunting practices used by everyone in the area who hunted this parcel without worrying about access plus the lay of the land. I think there has been a well developed and ingrained mindset of the deer and there are “sentry deer” who when hunters access the first day of the season they instantly clear the whole area that I’ve identified as a bedding area. This are is about 5-8 acres, which may be oversized I don’t know. But I’m examining the topo’s hard and putting in some leg work once I get my knee repaired from this season. I need to find their exit points and entry points to the “bedding area” I found one “sentry bed”. The one big buck followed me in first day and found me and blew and blew and blew and blew and blew! Hunted the area was dead for months after that. Gotta avoid that guy this coming season. As he is still showing up on my cameras. I gotta figured out to access his travel route undetected

I think I’ll be moving my food plot next year. I have a rectangle 13 acre lot that borders public land on two sides. I walk through the property to get to my food plot. The property is surrounded by cedar swamp, the deer are bedding on the public land and traveling through the swamp to my property. I’ll likely create a new plot closer to the top of the property and turn the old plot into bedding.

I'm pretty lucky to hunt a 16 acre Reduction Zone area right about 100 yards behind my property. Only the owner and I hunt it. And he might go a handful of times a year. It's in-between a bedding area and a couple of ag fields. And there are 4 lane highways for deer trails. I have 2 hanging stands and I have a ground blind and a climber that I use for bad wind days for the stands. Gonna try to beat Chris Bee's 5 deer in 20 minutes record.

A few of your videos you mention to put food plots parallel to your borders.... so when the deer come onto your property, then travel further and stay longer on the property. Just curious 🤔

I have 8 acres in the middle of farm land. 4 of those acres I'm converting to a small hunting parcel. This past season I had at least 9 doe and 6 bucks ranging from spike to a 9pt bedding down during the night. By hunting season there is isn't a fall food source and my land lacks the cover to hold them. I harvested a few thousand box alder maple seeds to plant this spring as well as ordering switch grass and red osier dogwood to start building cover. This small parcel is for my kids to hunt for youth and rifle season. I expect a minimum 3 years before I start seeing results.

Hi Jeff, I have a question on the depth of cover. You always talk about having depth of cover but you don't really say how much is considered enough. I have 40 acres with some small food plots, total around half an acre, on the south border just in from the road and another one that is about one acre in maybe 75-100 yards from the road on the southwest side of the property. The whole west side and north end and most of the east side are all sanctuary and is low land that is really thick. There is a few does and a couple of young bucks using it now and coming out to the food plots at all times of the day. There wasn't a mature buck here this year, last year i had one that hung around from late Oct. to mid Feb.

I have 15ac that is an outside corner. I put food in the middle because it’s open ag on 2 sides. Is it ok to put a plot next to the open ag? It’d be fine when the corn is up but wide open when it’s cut.
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Жыл бұрын
I would likely not put food in the middle and only place the food towards the ag. But do much to consider! That food in the middle can destroy the depth of cover which is a critical tip for you...

How am I supposed to add enticing bedding cover on my land when my neighbor has a 10 year old 40 acre clear cut that never gets touched? Left all the white oak in it as well. I’m in a big woods setting so wouldn’t it make sense to let the deer bed there and just bring them to my land with high quality food?
@JayN4GO
@JayN4GO Жыл бұрын
I would build a late season spot here. Those acorns don’t last all year. In December, if you have plots further in on your parcel, access with good wind. You might also consider TSI or laying over some trash trees on your side to create bedding. Mature bucks like to bed next to food “within 100 yards” If not pressured. Beans and corn would be great on your side

A lot of public land isn’t hunted because it’s land locked and the surrounding private land owners won’t grant access to it from their property. I can canoe for miles to get to it or trudge for miles through marsh to get there. It takes a real effort, especially in the dark. Everyone hunts the parts that have reasonable access.

There is really no cover you can plant under oaks...it is best to cut a portion of them down. Also, apple orchards are a marginal attraction for deer except for when the fruit is falling. Even then it is rarely their main afternoon food source unless there are no food plots or ag in the area.

100 acres is a small parcel? People out here clicking on this are thinking you mean 10-20 acres... If 100 acres is a small parcel, I'll just pass on having the silver spoon up my ass like the people who can afford 100 acres already do... I've hunted since I was 7. Seeing all these people from out of state, and new to the sport hunter, angers me.

I kill more mature big ass bucks along fence rows and open fields than you can in the woods. Big Bucks will bed down along fence rows and open fields and hold does down out in the open. I keep fence rows along our farm just for deers.
