Great video, Joshua. I love my Lee filter system and need to get back to more landscapes again. I focus mostly on birds. Are you on Instagram? Look me up mtamemory My biggest challenge is just getting to the coast. I live 4 hours away but I hope to get there soon. Thanks again.

Hi Josh, Yes, I spend 90% of my photography and videography on the coast and these are great tips you give here for those new to this type of scene. Another thing, which I'm sure you may have experienced, is the need to watch the state of the tide. I've been almost caught by rising tide in areas which would have required a swim to get back to where I came from! ;)

Thanks, Josh. Great tips, as always! I remember your old video featuring your wipeout on the rock and have definitely been in a similar situation with splashes hitting the camera, or drenching me or having to grab the camera and bail. I think the biggest technical struggle shooting seascapes is the salt spray and photobombers. lol. Composition is usually just a matter of trying different things to see what works and can usually be easily changed. I need to get some of those paper wipes, as the micro fiber towels and lens cloths don't remove the salt water too well. I've also found that some filters that have the hydrophobic coating, tend to wipe a bit cleaner. And as always, safety is very important by reading the behavior and changes in the ocean, looking up the tides, surf and weather to make sure your don't put yourself in an unsafe situation. -Cheers

I will be on the Oregon Coast next week for my first attempt at serious seascape photos. Figuring out where to go that is accessible for me is one challenge. I am old, overweight and not strong. Nor do I like being cold. I told me son this trip will be the big reveal on what is the biggest driver; my adversion to being cold or my hunger for great photographs!

The safety tips can't be emphasized enough. Paying attention to the tide table should be added. About a year ago, I was shooting on the Oregon Coast, not aware of when the tide was coming in. As the day progressed and I had walked around a rocky bend, I remember thinking: "This could be a sketchy spot to be if a big wave comes in." Well, as I was observing the waves coming in as time went on, I noticed they were definitely coming in deeper. I made it out all right, but it was a slow process of climbing to the next rock, waiting for waves to recede as I looked for the next safe spot to step. What felt like half an hour may only have been ten minutes to get back to safety. I beat myself up for putting myself in that situation the rest of the day and won't forget that lesson. (And now I also keep a towel and a fresh, dry pair of socks in my car kit!)

Oh I like this guy! Very clear, extremely practical, and well organized. He explains things very clearly, not just what to do with some formula, but with enough understanding to be able to actually implement it. It's great that he shows how each effect works with examples with and without the effect from the same scene and point of view. His phrase for what you want out of a photograph-- "dynamic, engaging, and practical"--applies as well to his tutorials. Thank you.

Hey man! I forgot how much I loved your channel. I've recently took a break from photography as I kept getting myself down about trying to get a great image and falling short everytime and then entering some into competitions and the images just getting pulled apart, it was brutal. Then a batch of the corona virus just left me floored and not doing any photography I'm getting back Into it now and wanted to watch a few videos (first in a long time) and yours popped up. I love your videos man, they really help me out and give me confidence again. I look forward to seeing the rest of your work but looks like I've got alot to catch up on! Take care Nathan

Joshua, I feel this was one of your best videos in some time. Your focus on technique instruction was something that drew me to subscribe to your channel some time ago. Your skills as an educator are your strong point. I feel you have gotten away from that to some degree with recent video content. This video was extremely informative. You explain things thoroughly with a degree of humor which makes your vids entertaining. Great job and thank you. After watching this video, I feel like finding a coast somewhere to apply your teachings. Thanks for the inspiration.

Hey Bob, thanks so much. Glad this video resonated. TBH, it's a challenge to continuously put out pure education and teaching videos. That's why I've been experimenting with some different videos recently. I want to share more inspiration and BTS as well, as opposed to solely education.

Great video, Josh. I just bought my first carbon fiber tripod last year and have to admit that I'm a bit reluctant to push it deep into the sand like you recommend. Any suggestions on cleaning/maintenance after sand and saltwater exposure that have kept your tripods in good working order?
@JoshuaCrippsPhotography
@JoshuaCrippsPhotography 3 жыл бұрын
I can my tripods afterward by fully extending the legs and giving them a thorough rinse in the shower. I also switched over from an enclosed ballhead to an open design from Acratech because it's 10x easier to keep clean and free from corrosion.

Thanks, Ralph! Normally I wear muck boots. XtraTuffs, specifically. The big problem with them is if water gets over the top of the boot. So for my next coastal trip I am going to try out a pair of neoprene canyoneering shoes.
