Only thing I think this missed was a reference to the mental health benefits of bike commuting, nothing clears the mind at the end of a stressful day like that homeward bike ride … everyone touts the physical health benefits and they are considerable, but getting home chilled (and satisfied!) does wonders for you and family life!

Totally agree. My commute is very short, but if it’s been a stressful day I extend my commute, and get home feeling mentally better, plus burning those extra calories makes sure I get a good nights sleep

I had a job that was far away and I had to wear business dress clothes everyday which was too heavy to transport all the time. So I would drive in on Monday with my bike and clothes for the week, leave the car and bike commute all week. Then drive the car home on Friday evening. It really kept me committed to riding every day even in weather I really would have preferred to avoid!

Ahhhh yeahhhh great tip. I used to do similar actually. Leave the car there and that meant I would have to cycle in the week if I wanted to go anywhere :) I guess the car turned into an expensive wardrobe on wheels 😂

I'm 55 years old and I've suffered from depression for about 25 years, exercise has always bee a part of managing it for me, mostly running, short distances 3 or 4 times a week. I work in a hospital appx. 13 miles away and earlier this year after a lot of thought and research I sold my car (my wife kept hers so we still had a car) bought a btwin tilt 120 folding bike from decathlon and started cycling to my local station, 2.5 miles away, then train, then 1.5 mile cycle at the other end. I did this everyday, whatever the weather and have benefitted physically and mentally. I've just bought a hybrid bike through the cycle to work scheme, I pick it up next week and after watching your film I'm going to start cycling the whole way, to and from work one day a week and take it from there. Until now everyone said commuting more than 10 miles each way was really difficult, but you are right, if you want to do it , you can and will do it and, as you say, it doesn't have to be all or nothing, on the other day's I'll carry on with bike and train. It is healthier, it does make you feel sharper and more alive, it's saved me a small fortune and you don't have to search for parking spaces. Thanks Katie.

Pannier racks attach by 4 bolts. Don't take long to remove/install. Panniers are arguably the best option and ortlieb prob. The best. Tailfin is lovely but £££ and v.desirable to thieves. Good lights that you can recharge at work. Spare tubes @work. Carry tools and tubes/pump, easily accessible also disposable gloves. Reliable tyres. Can you take bike in work? Do so. Overshoes are worth having to keep feet dry. Handryers good for drying kit, server rooms even better.

Hi Katie I enjoy this series of videos so much. I have been taking my bike into town on the bus and doing some riding around town, then I catch the bus home later in the afternoon again. I am enjoying riding so much. If it rains I get annoyed a little bit as I want to go out for a ride. I am already starting to feel fitter and have more energy. Riding around town I do find it hard with traffic being so close all of the time but I am getting better with it each time I do it. I turned to riding because after a few k's of walking my feet were killing me due to me being overweight. Combine now cycling and walking soccer and some walking around the neighbourhood I am starting to lose weight and am feeling much better. I am addicted to cycling now I absolutely love it.

Keep a log. Doesn't need to be a formal one, but just track something simple, like money you saved each week in fuel savings. Its gives you something tangible to look at for motivation. And, you'll then realize how much money you spend in driving for things outside of your commute, and be motivated to bike in those areas also. I have a marker board on which I write down the amount I spend every time I fuel the auto. I try to make a game to see how little I can use each month. Shorter doesn't necessarily equal better. I could move closer to work. I don't want to. I like my slightly longer commute. Its my alone time after work. Its meditative. After a while, the commute is the part of the day you start to look forward to. Diet. Diet is important to get/stay in shape. You can't out train a bad diet. But also, your diet has massive effects on how you smell. Super important if you don't have shower access. Less meat and dairy, more fruits and veggies. Your (and your coworkers') nostrils will be grateful. Down a full glass of water when you wake up. You can have your coffee after if you need. But drink the water. I promise, it will make you feel better. Its ok to stop and listen to the birds sing.

I found one real help for me was getting the right tyres. I appreciate this is getting a bit technical really early but I just felt safer and more in control and therefore I enjoyed the commute much more. I commuted in London and although there were some busy sections I managed to find quiet parallel routes which were great. Starting the day with an enjoyable bike ride and a shower always made me feel chilled out but mentally fresh. Great video and thank you for encouraging more people to cycle.

I was giving myself all sorts of excuses to not pick up cycling (not having a bike was a major one) and desperately wanted to lose weight. I would scroll through KZfaq and Instagram for inspiration to get my backside off the sofa. I came across Katie's channel and the next thing I know, I was in a saddle! It's only been a few months since I had my bike and started commuting to work once a week around 10k each way. It was my 30th Birthday last week and I woke up in the morning and decided I was going to do 30 miles for my 30th (what a treat!). I completed this little self challenge and was buzzing for the rest of the week that I smashed my longest ride yet. All it took was for me to set my mind right and to just keep going. I actually really loved every minute of the ride. Just wanted to say a huge thank you to Katie for her channel and for having great content and advice. It's genuinely inspired me and I look forward to where I can push myself next.

Nice tips. I have another 2 areas every bike commuter need to look into seriously. First is the traffic, unlike racing on the track, the road is open for all sorts of cars and buses and heavy trucks. Safety is the main concern as I have several closed shave with private buses. My solution is to divert my route to residential area which also increase the distance and time on the bike. The second is rainy days, and I have no solution for this. With or without raincoat is still the same, you are wet and smells. Since February, it rains so frequent that it break my schedule and now it is so difficult to pick up the riding habit.

I started commuting by bike every day a few years ago; great bike paths and a 15km each way ride. Love the mental break before and after work and now I take the long way home a couple of times a week. I'm lucky that where I work has showers, lockers and a towel service (not to mention an ironing board for us corporate types) but even in the absence of all of those I'd make it work like you said. Commuting by bike has been life changing. 20kg dropped and now a 100km weekend ride is a given. Great series Katie, come back to Australia again soon!

Another great video Katie. I never thought I'd say this but I'm really missing my cycle commuting since lockdown started and I now work from home. That regular daily exercise set me up well for the day. One thing I'd say about relying on your bike as a means of transport is you need to be able to fix flats and other mechanicals by the roadside and components wear down much quicker than you think.

Full length mudguards, they changed my commuting life. You and your bike are kept so much cleaner and drier. In the UK you can get caught out at any time by rain. They don't weight too much, once they are fitted you can keep them on all year round. Also overshoes to keep your toes warm and dry when the weather is poor. Over time i have built up a range of clothing for all seasons, but a good jacket and gloves to start with are invaluable. Top tip from a 12 year commuter....mudguards though. You can even extend them with a cut up plastic bottle to give you extra flaps to stop even more spray, just cable tie them onto the ends.

Pre pandemic Die hard mountain biker here. Started a new job in September last year which took me off the building sites and into an office environment which then gave me the option and chance to commute. This pandemic has now got me into the world of Lycra and panniers. A lot of people have decided they want to mountain bike in the local woods and trail centres but don’t know the etiquette especially on shared trails so they are tearing up trails and annoying local people. So I recently bought myself a adventure bike (Sonder Santiago). Game changer. What a difference in the mileage I can knock out now. I went for a blast on my mtb the other day and absolutely smashed every pb I’d ever set. So having spent the last 15 -20 years stoically saying I will never be a roadie. 😀 I am now a fully fledged bi cyclist/commuter and loving it. Training for my first audax too. Waiting until I’m comfortable doing 200k before I enter one. As for commute I get changed in a server room under a fan. Nice in summer and chilly in winter. Keep a towel at work and changes of clothes and a can of deodorant. Your right about giving yourself plenty of time. Nothing worse than being late and having to go straight into a meeting while dripping with sweat. Really like your videos.

On the subject of gear, I'd second the travel light philosophy, these days a tablet/laptop, odds and sods of clothing in a courier bag is pretty light and manageable and not as bulky/sweaty as a rucksack. I'd also 100% endorse a Buffalo Cycle Shirt as the perfect commuting gear, after many years riding I'd not now be without one ever, follow their guide about wearing it (sizing, layers, etc) and its unbeatable, it shrugs off wind/rain and I'm never cold … now my knees on the other hand ...

Been cycle commuting since the mid 80s. My standard commuting rig came through trial, error and bike tech advances. The first rule of cycle commuting that became clear to me is: "Never commute in your work clothes or work in your cycling clothes." That includes socks, shoes and undies. Wear padded shorts even if it's 5 miles. Wear mtb shorts, too in deference to modesty. No one needs to know that much about your business. lol Mudguards are a must. Planet Bike or Zefal. Either will do. Good rainwear is a must. When freezing temps hit use mittens not gloves. For tires Schwalbe Marathon Plus. Expensive, but worth it. I went 15 years w/o a puncture using them. Ortlieb Roller Classic Sport Panniers. Expensive, but TOTALLY worth it. Delta Universal Mega Rack. Best rack on the market. Surprisingly inexpensive. Oh, and your frame pump. The ONLY frame pump that matters is the Topeak Road Morph w/guage. The Mountain and Mini Morphs are good, too. They just don't have a guage. Just take it off the bike while working. Otherwise, it'll get stolen. Church, yo. lol Equipment wise don't cheap out on anything. Get good stuff. Your future self will thank you, trust me. Your experience, distance, terrain, work situation and routing will define your rig. For example my commute was 42 miles, semi-rural rt w/a 600 ft elevation drop in and the reverse climb on the way home. So, my needs were completely different than a 5 mile urban commute. This is a great starter video that doesn't dazzle you with footwork. It covers alot of the specifics of hygiene very well. Most don't. The suggestion about doing a reccie is spot on as well. However long it takes you on your reccie add 15 minutes. Practice changing out a tube. Learn how to fix a broken chain. Keep your bike clean and free from gunk building up on the drive train. All right that's enough. Enjoy your commutes. They will change your perspective a bicycle from a toy to a tool. Cheers. EDIT: Sorry, but this is important. Lighting and visibility. This has been an excellent series.Thank you! Appreciated the options you mentioned in this episode for getting your gear to work. One variation I’ve tried recently is a traditional saddle bag with a carradice bracket. Swift even makes a bag that can be attached to the saddle this way and/or used as a handlebar bag. Versatile! And it’s easy to take off the carradice bracket when you’re doing a sportive, etc.

It is great way to lose some stress and clear your mind after work. In the morning commuting is the best way to oxygenate your body and start preparing for a workday. Great tips Katie! I use saddle bag and sometimes backpack. Less carrying is a great idea. I am bringing on Monday most stuff and taking to wash clothes on Friday. I'm bringing the food (only lunch) from home.

My commute is not far, but have switched from daily car use to almost zero car use. Your video has great tips, I like my messenger style bag, and as UK weather is not great (currently fab), I use a proviz jacket which is warm enough and water resistant enough for most rides plus really reflective for low light riding.

I used to use the disabled toilet at work to get changed. More room and there was a sink to have a wash. I’m retired now so don’t have to commute. My longest commute was 21 miles each way, but I would only do that in the summer. In winter I’d ride 10 miles to the train station and catch the train in (getting changed in the train toilet!).

OK. Things I learned from the commute. (Yes I want a book). First problem is parking. Where to stick the bike. I was lucky in that they were OK with me storing the machine in the office. If not, then don't use the nice bike. The next thing is quite relevant about washing. You can get towels that fold up really small. I used those and although they only absorbed the water before becoming soaked, they did the job. I commuted to 2 sites. The first had a shower (Yeah), the second didn't. So I used wet wipes or a flannel in the toilet. Keep deodorant at work. That and shoes. The rest can pack down. I commuted with two bikes. The first was a Raleigh Royal with Reynolds tubing and a touring set up. This meant that it had a triple chain set.So if you have a lot to carry the granny cog helps with the hills. However, by keeping stuff at work I could use a backpack on its own. Due to mountain biking I have a reasonable Camelback. This has the benefit of the bladder, as well as lots of room for clothes, laptop, projector and lunch (Use sandwich bags, rather than a plastic container, as you can pack it in easier. The other thing about the Camelback is that they have put a great deal of thought into sweat and how it dissipates.. It doesn't do away with sweat, but id disperses easier. SPDs. Better for traffic. Another tip. Wear a helmet cam. Failing that, wear a matchbox painted orange or black. A helmet cam doesn't need to be on or even working to make the motorists behave. If you have a longer commute, take charging kit with you for lights etc. Dealing with motorists. You will never find a more selfish, entitled, opinionated pillock than somebody who is commuting to work and believes that you are holding them up. You need to predict what they are going to do and take action to place your bike in such a way that they are not tempted to squeeze past you at traffic islands etc. The golden rule is the more room you give them, the less they will give you. So don't gutter hug. In fact, practice something called defensive riding. Have a read of a HMSO publication called Roadcraft. They do them for cycles and motorbikes. Explore something called defensive riding. But expect the motorist to do something stupid and you will be fine. Anther useful tip. Vary your route so that you don't get board. If you have a mountain bike, take that in occasionally and make use of any parks, woodland or bridlways to have a bit of fun. Anyway, there is my two penneth worth. Luck

Having a choice of bikes means I have choices. 1 bike has a pannier and I call this my ‘commuter bike’ 1 bike is a single speed ‘mountain bike’ and I use a ‘rock rider’ back pack with bladder with this bike. 1 bike is ‘road bike’ and I use a backpack with this bike. It all depends on what’s happening after work as regards choice. My commuter bike has mudguards which are necessary and I will consider going anywhere on this bike. My road bike is just for the road. My single speed bike is my go anywhere bike. No worries about giving this bike a hard time. It can take it. One tip is to ride your commute route when you’re not working so you know what to expect time and fitness wise. Another tip is to get everything ready the night before your commute. Allow plenty of time. Mechanicals happen. Practice changing an inner tube in the comfort of your home. Remember… If commuting by bike was easy then everyone would do it. It takes guts and determination to get up 2 hours earlier than normal to ride into work and with practice that time can reduce. Realistically though it’s a choice between falling out of bed and into the car and getting to work ‘fresh and dry’ or get up mega early, ride you and get to work ‘hot & sweaty’. One more tip… Get Katie’s book. You won’t be disappointed.

I remember in 2001 in calgary there was a transit strike & my car transmission died. They told me it would take a few months to fix it. I had just got a new job. I called my new boss & he told me it’s my problem to get to work. So, I remembered I had bought a old bike at yard sale. I pulled it out & most of gears didn’t work, but I started riding it to work (18kms each way). No practise & hadn’t been on a bike for over 20 years. Our city is in the the Foothills of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Hills everywhere & steep. So steep you have to crank your head way back just to see the horizon. The first ride almost killed me. When I got to work, I went into changing room we had. I must have past out. Because the next thing I remember was the boss kicking me in the legs (took me a minute to realize I was on the ground staring up at the ceiling) and asking ‘What is the matter with you!! . I looked at him & pointed my finger to my forehead & told my boss to shot me right here, because I don’t think I can keep doing this. He laughed & told me to get up & get to work & don’t pass out in changing room again. I kept at it & even after my car got fixed I kept cycling to that job for next couple years, except in Canadian winters. Best cycling I had done.

These sound like great tips. For my arduous 2k commute I can disregard. I carry a heavy backback, because the ride is too short to work up a sweat. I‘m so lucky because part of that ride is through allotment gardens, so I experience a tiny sliver of nature regularly. I will consider prolonging my ride home though.

My Dad passed away about a month ago after battling cancer for about a year. During that year due to a combination of me travelling over and back (about an hour each way) in my car on a regular basis and lets face it some comfort eating while dealing with the situation, I went from someone who could stand to lose a few lbs to being a couple of stone overweight. One of the last conversations I had with my Dad was around my weight (not in a bad way) just that he hoped I could get it back under control and look after myself and he mentioned about me getting back to cycling. Prior to Dad getting sick I had been cycling quite a bit, the day he was diagnosed I was getting ready to do a sportive. So I've decided to get back into it but after a year away and being significantly heavier and less fit than I was I have decided to buy an e-bike for the commute with a view to it getting me back into cycling without the pressure of hills, or being put off by a lack of fitness. My theory is, use the ebike initially to get up and running, use as much assistance as you need and establish a routine, then as the fitness comes on, ease the assistance off. Once the fitness and confidence have built a bit, get the road bike back out and try commuting the odd day with no assistance, then try and make it more frequent and get faster. The past year has been a very tough one but I feel that hours on a bike rather than in a car will help me to process things. On the off chance that Katie will read this comment on a 2 year old one of her videos :) I have always liked your content (long time subscriber). While some channels will make you feel like you need to be wearing skin tight lycra and doing 60 mile commutes every day or there's just no point. Katie sells cycling for the joy of it and the benefits surrounding it and she has been through what most of us are aspiring to do. Its relate-able and the fact that she seems like a genuinely nice person with all the same restrictions (time mostly) that most of us face. Its nice to get her perspective on things. Keep up the good work Katie, it makes a more meaningful difference than you probably realise 🙂

I started commuting by bike just before lockdown (13.5 miles each way). Only a c couple of times a week, it was great and I loved it. The best tip I got from a friend was to leave some Jeans (or trousers etc) and a pair of shoes at work. This way I'm only transporting my laptop, food, underwear and a shirt to work. Makes it a bit lighter on my back. Also, roll your clothes if you don't want creases in them 😊

Most of these issues are non-issues while commuting on an e-bike. I don't have to worry about weight or sweat. I still get a workout in, especially during the colder months or of the year because I turn down the assist level to keep warm and reduce my speed to reduce the wind chill factor.

Loved your video. I am hoping to start commuting to work and you gave me some really nice suggestions. I've always been a a kind of all or nothing guy, so your tip about starting out riding just a day or two a week makes sense to me. My commute will be about 15 miles one way. One big obstacle is I work 12 hour shifts. Add to that commuting time of about one hour each way brings my work and commute time to 14 hours and 30 miles daily. However I would look at commuting time as quality time. Anyway thanks again for you video! Elvis Oost
