Sailing SV Delos

3 жыл бұрын

You know that feeling when you’ve bitten more than you can chew? Winter sailing in New England is no joke, and it took its toll on both Delos and her crew. We find ourselves facing a gigantic project list to complete in only a few weeks before Karin's US Visa expires. After running aground 4 times we finally make it to a dock in Annapolis to begin tackling our list. Delos is now over 20 years old and she's in need of some love, and we're in the perfect place for us to get some work done. After writing our to-do list we both feel a bit stunned by what we’ve taken on, and things don't get easier as Brian heads in for surgery making him incapacitated for at least two weeks.
Thanks for watching and for all the love! Below are some links if you want to get even more emerged into our sailing life as a family. Many HUGS! Kazza, Brian and little Sierra

She has seemed extremely tired and burnt out since they came back. As a first time mom, that's more than enough to break anyone. Add everything else and it's understandable. However, it isn't great youtube entertainment.

I have been on board for 35 years three boats, wife for 20 years and daughter for 15 years. I know how projects always take longer then planed I remember when we sold one boat we were moving to the new boat when I broke my arm and had to go in for surgery! My wife was 9 months pregnant at the time. All in one week I had surgery, we had a baby, sold one boat, moved onto the new boat and relocated the work shop! I will never forget that week!!! It is amazing how it all works out! Love the Videos! Keep up the good work !!!!

I love how Brian and Karen always show us the good, the bad, and the ugly! Not to ashamed to say, "we ran aground 3 times just now!" Every true boat owner has! Not all will admit it! I love this channel! The content library is vast and rich! I have been following for years and still haven't seen all of the Delos adventures! I am happy to still have episodes to binge watch! 😁‼️ Like discovering an old hit Netflix show that has 10 seasons of content to watch! Gold mine💰🎞️🎥🎦🎬📽️📸🤳

@@svdelos Yes sir! Happy to hear that your hernia is repaired! Who knew, you and Delos would need a refit/repair after 15+ years at the same time! Age gets us all, but the time spent, and memories made are all worth it! Happy to see that the Delos tribe is able to help you and your beautiful girls during this time. May your healing be as Swift as Delos surfing down the waves on the high seas 🌊 ⛵🌏♥️‼️

I was going to write something after the last video but didn't get around to it. This is largely for Karin. You may already have read similar comments from other moms who follow the channel, but in case you haven't ... here goes. I was 41, independent, and working full-time when my daughter was born. I adore my daughter, she is a better person than I will ever be, and I would gladly give my life to protect her. But that does not mean that being a mom has been easy. It doesn't mean that it's been easy to sacrifice my own desires for her good. Other moms would say things like "enjoy it while you can, because it goes so fast." And now that she's 6, I know what they mean about it going fast. But enjoying something is not made possible simply because that experience goes fast. When she was a baby, I was always (and still largely am) exhausted. I gave her every ounce of love I had each day, and she always could have taken more. Most of the time, I felt like a middling mom, and a lousy wife, daughter, and employee. Much of what I enjoyed about myself - reading, projects in my workshop, skiing, surfing and sailing - gave way to the more pressing work of raising a healthy, happy, balanced child in a reasonably clean home. Once I became a mom, I found that was my primary identity in the eyes of other people. And while I resent that, for the moment, that's who I am - a mom. And as hard as it can be sometimes, if I am very lucky, that's who I will be until I die. All this to say ... This isn't easy. For all the rewards, it isn't easy. It can be brutal. And it's okay to feel that way. Kazza, you are not alone. You may be physically on your own as the only mom on that boat, but you've got all the other moms pulling for you in spirit!

For crying out loud, that’s called “life”. We live with the choices we make. Go back 200 years and examine the struggles they faced both men a women. This heroic mantle women put on their lives today is nothing but a bunch of hogwash. Knock us back those 200 years (which could and has a real probability of happening) and you would see what struggle is about.

Brian, glad to see in the comments that you’re recovering well from the surgery! Earlier in the episode Kazza mentioned that some of the nuggets books were ruined from all the moisture. If Sierra needs some new children’s books, I’d be more than happy to buy some & send to you all. If she needs new books just let me know where you’d like me to send them. With all the maintenance on Delos + your surgery, that had to be a substantial chunk of change. I just discovered you all a couple weeks ago on KZfaq & I’ve been blasting through all the episodes. Love them all & love that I can watch your adventures & for a couple hours every day I can escape from the stress of my life & live vicariously through you all. Thank you all so much for that! Much love, good vibes, & possibly some children’s books from West Virginia. 😁 Bob

Life keeps throwing you tougher challenges and the tough ones in the past harden and strengthen you to handle the current challenges and the ones yet to come. Wishing you all the best and love today and everyday.

Good Lord Brian and Kazza, don't kill yourselves. Whenever you do a big efit project like this you should beat the war drum and get volunteer help. If you tell the Delos tribe what skill sets you need...diesel mechanic, electrician, machinist, millwright, engineering, big bubba lifting power...I'm sure you would get all sorts of volunteers. I know you think it might be an imposition, but for the rest of us a weekend or two of helping is a welcome break from normal and a great way to feel like we are helpful. Plus you get local knowledge of the best places to go for services like galvanizing, engine parts, etc. Don't hesitate to ask for help. Fair Winds!

Fri-Yay Delos! Poor Kazza. What a mess! You have such a great attitude about it though! Oh well. Boat Life! Much love as always! Great video. Loved seeing all the mechanical maintenance. Boat refit and Brian refit. Haha. Kazza - do you sing the next line to Sierra? (But if you try sometimes... you’ll find... you get what you need!) Be well guys!!

We run into the moisture problem as well, in our camper. When we're doing cold-weather camping, and have the heat running inside, we struggle with condensation.

Considering using stone wool. Stole wool is fire resistant which can tolerate 1,800°F (1,000°C), and don't release toxic gasses. Even a very thin insulation would help a lot - and also dramatically lowering heating cost, but not if you forgot to insulate a very small area. That area would be a cold bridge (bridging cold to warm), which will transfer heat to the cold. Rockwool is one of many stone wool products. Polyurethane isn't a good material to use for insulation. Polyurethane burns violently and releases cyanide when it burns. Cyanide's toxicity has been proven on a site which entry sign reads "Arbeit Mact Frei".

Love the "real life" look at boat life! I'm blessed to have a relatively new home and still the maintenance and upkeep are enough to make me emotional sometimes. The feeling of being "aground" does suck luckily I get to sail vicariously through the Delos channel among others on youtube. Keep it up you guys rock. Also hernias suck, how was that first sneeze?
