The salt trick is excellent, not only it prevents the pieces from moving it also enchants protection and wards off against ghosts and spirits.

I actually applauded when I saw the nail-head used to mark the dowel location. Excellent tips. Every one of them.

My dads a sweet but old fashioned man and worked mostly as a carpenter. He never taught me much carpentry cause I am his daughter but between observing him work and your channel Ive built my own bedframe and desk and now hes more hands-on teaching me since he sees I can build. Gotta to admit, that trick with taping the nail down to transfer the marks is genius!!! Many times i need to do a dowel but I spent more time finding the darn jig.

Glen, this is terrific. The only thing stopping it from being in the Top Five woodworking videos of all time was that you didn't sprinkle salt from overhead, bouncing it off your elbow to get even spread. That would have been totally epic.

My Dad was a machinist. When I was seven, I began cleaning his shop. By the time I was in 8th grade I was working on a lathe. By the time I was senior in High School I knew I didn't want to be a machinest. Metal is unyielding and cold. I found wood to be much warmer and the grains were beautiful. Plus wood is much easier to work with all year round. I'm now 64 years old. Retired. I plan on buying a country home with a shop where I can make toys and furniture as a hobby. I love watching wood working videos. Your video was great for what I watn to do. Thanks

I almost didn't watch this because I have seen so many tips and tricks that are just lame. Well this was one out of the box! You addressed about every problem I gave been dealing with for years. Normally clamping glued wood for me means reach for the mallet, now it means pass the salt. Thank you so much! Every one was a gem!

Many "tips" on woodworking videos have been repeated again and again. This is the first time I have ever heard of the salt trick to deter slippage when gluing. Well done!

Let's see if I can shorten this up. The summer I was fourteen I worked for a moving company, I was assigned to help the box maker. Back then moving boxes were built on site. This carpenter beveled the edges of adjoining boards with a jack plane, marked dowel holes with the nail head trick, mitered corners, made every cut with a hand saw, blunted the tip of every nail. Now the point. This was my introduction to wood working and I thought that was simply "how ya did it". As an introduction to what I later learned was "a way to do it" it was a very good introduction indeed. I see that same distinction in your work. Keep up the good work.

Glen, you lived up to your ‘beginner’ statement. You didn’t start of using thousands of dollars worth of shop tools. Every tip was at a real beginner level but also useful to advanced woodworkers. I’m going to use your idea about spring clamps and rubber bands to repair some edge banding on a coffee table shelf. Had no idea how to secure it. Man, I’d love to be a helper in your shop for a month or two. It would be a speed course in practical woodworking. Many thanks!

Some Great tips. Thank You for Sharing. I well remember making a coffee bar stool at school. Six months later, all the guys are waiting for the school bus, sat nonchalantly on their coffee bar stools. I waited for the bus to arrive, dashed across the road, then jumped on the bus. The other guys asked me where ''MY'' stool was. I shamefully had to admit that I had made so many mistakes, the so called coffee bar stool was now a Foot Stool and was stuffed up my jumper. I have to be very, VERY careful when working with wood. I became a motor mechanic and measuring wood to a thousandth of an inch is not always advisable...believe you Me! It can and has! caused problems. I once talked about making a Dolls House for my Daughter. My wife quipped ....will you be starting on a FULL sized House. I really enjoy working with wood. You just made me remember a real construction professional....my father. He taught me the trick with the dowels and the screw back in the 70’s. I was just 10 years old. Now, I am a licensed home improvement contractor in Maryland. I was born in Nicaragua. In Nicaragua we have a direct influence from Spain when it comes to construction, more over, Nicaragua has the oldest colonial city in America (Granada) named after Granada in Spain. Nice video!

I knew about the salt because I use the concept while cleaning my cast iron pans but the other ones blew my mind especially the dowel thing with the nail. I’m just starting out trying to build a nice wood working area and hobby, In trying to find the cheapest way to acquire the tools being on a fixed income and your channel is helping out tremendously. Thank you so much for everything you do. Your taking away a lot of my fears.

I've been a woodworking hobbyist for over 30 years, and I grew up watching my carpenter father. I never knew about the rubber bands on the spring clamps. And the other thing that would have saved me recently when gluing up a cutting board is putting salt on the glued surfaces to prevent them from sliding. That alone was worth watching the 12-minute video. You have a new subscriber now!

This video's great! I've watched I don't know how many woodwork and craft pieces on YT, but I really enjoyed the simplicity and no-nonsense approach to the way you did this and the actual tips and tricks which I honestly have not seen anywhere else-they're very clever! Some of the solutions you provide make woodwork more possible for someone like me (I don't have the means in any respect - money or space) I have seen so many videos and whilst the host goes on to talk about their project or whatever, I am there just looking at all their equipment and realising, it's not possible for me and ultimately thinking I'm wasting my time watching, but you showed some good ways of countering the lack of equipment, which I genuinely appreciate.
