Now that we know that it's very possible to win a game of Warcraft 3 with pretty low APM, let's go a bit more into the extremes of this idea! The first game will have to be played at 60 APM, and for the second one, we're going into overdrive, at 600!
60 APM game and then 600 APM game - THE DIFFERENCE (Game played on 14-April-2024)

I was in a magic: The Gathering tournament about 15 years ago. My opponent was aggressively shuffling his hand by moving the left-most card to the right-most slot; repeat. It was kinda the equivalent of spamming a flag in WC3. One turn I was pondering whether to cast a spell for a good 15-20 seconds, as I was playing around a counterspell. My opponent was flicking/shuffling away with his 5 or so cards in hand, and they kept making this slick flicking/snapping sound. Sound like a playing card in a bicycle wheel. It wasn't so much that it was annoying, but it seemed ridiculous. I was thinking how dumb and pointless it was for him to keep flicking like that. So, as I'm thinking of whether I should cast my spell or pass the turn, suddenly a card flicks right outta my opponent's hand, flies into the air, and lands in the middle of the table face up; it was a counterspell. I passed the turn without casting. ;)

I made a comment earlier (which seems to have been deleted by whoever is managing Grubbys channel) that I made high ranks in FFA ladder with an APM rarely exceeding 100 in a full game. This was like over 20 years ago when everyone played like noobs. Anyhow I remember that my battle apm went much higher. I guess the mod thinks I am lying.

@@luckbox360same as me. Back then when TFT was competitive (like 20 years ago?😅), I also had like 50 to 80 APM during base building and creeping but during fights it went up to 300. I personally don't understand the pointless rally point spamming and building swapping and it does not make you better or anything. Important is the apm value where it is necessary like in fights where you really need to do a lot. But base build and creeping is super chill and actually boring after some time 😊

Try a challenge where you primarily use your mouse instead of hot keys (like us casuals). For example, instead of pressing the key to select the appropriate building to build, you have to drag your mouse over and select it. Whenever you try to select/regroup your army, you have to click, hold, and drag your mouse to capture/recapture your entire army. Right-click to move around the map, select attack with your mouse to attack anyone, select spells with your mouse to use them, and select your inventory items with your mouse too!

APM can tell you how much stuff can be done in a moment of high amount of tasks. In SC2 there is always something to do. Wc3 has some down times where your apm drops, because you don’t have nearly enough to do to stay on 500apm

I've always played a lot of strategy and MOBA games, and my APM is ridicilous low yet I reach generally pretty high based on what I like to think is 'Common sense''. When Heroes of the Storm was still around, it would show everyones apm at the end of the match. It was satisfying to see my apm below 90 and everyone's elses 150-200 yet carrying the team

These are so weird. Like on one hand it's fun and interesting to see grubby limit himself, but nobody was ever complaining that playing as the pro player with 60 apm would be slowing them down. The argument is taking your whole skill in W3 and just abstracting it into the number that is APM - if you're good, you can do a lot of good actions per minute. If you're less good, you make much fewer good actions per minute. Grubby optimizing in this way only shows how much better than us he is and how hard it would be to have to play against someone with this skill as a starting player.

Its about the hotkeys and control groups not the apm. You can mouseclick constantly and end up with 100 apm. But less apm is better if you know all hotkeys and can use multiple keys without searching the keyboard.

Something I did with DotA is I was super entranced by miracle invoker. I tried to emulate it as much as possible, even trying to match his apm. Then after a few years of having high apm, I tried to throttle it down. A lot of apm is wasted actions, and I think there's value in both having high and low apm. Once you're able to refine a high apm down, you're able to think much quicker and more precisely

I feel like for these challenges it'd be best to keep yourself much lower than the max apm by like 10-20 or something when you're not interacting with your opponent in any way, just so you have more freedom of microing your units a bit better when you do end up fighting them

Low APM is not only about slow actions, it's also about avoiding clicking random buttons 200+ times to get high APM, like pros usually do at the beginning to warm up. Can you try to play without this random actions and just click only when it's needed? I used to be one of the highest MMR player with 70 APM back in the days in HoN (MOBA).

Or on SC2's case, splitting away from banelings, widow mines and disruptor shots.

I respect it. Mostly because I know how difficult it is to fight against your muscle memory in order to NOT press hotkeys constantly. Also, it genuinely does take a solid 180 APM peak to play Warcraft 3 at a decent level, and that's without any sort of unnecessary hotkey spam. Sure, there's a lot of down time, but even microing against creeps and simply doing macro things is more clicks/actions than some people think. PS: It's an average, you 100% spiked over 60 when fighting the UD. PSS: Reforged actually has input repeat built in. You can legitimately just hold down your control group hotkey and it will repeatedly select the control group and skyrocket your APM to over 1k. Hitman used to do it all the time, in addition to his normal macro key that would spam stuff. (Like, this guy legitimately had a prerecorded macro key that would just spam 1-2-1-2-1-2 for him.) It's why he had a very robotic 800 APM opening then suddenly dropped to like 120 the second his hero came out.
