Miluji Českou republiku a váš jazyk! Žiji v Krkonoších v Polsku a již několik let se učím váš jazyk. V České republice mám přátele a navštěvuji vaši zemi několikrát do roka. Byl jsem v Praze, Českém Krumlově, Liberci a mnoha dalších městech. Plul jsem i na české plachetnici La Grace. Také miluji vaše pivo. S pozdravem Maciek.

The hardest thing about czech are the cases for nouns and adjectives. You really can't learn these except in context from spoken Czech.

To be clear, a cognate is when two languages have words that share the same root, regardless of what the words mean. So I don't think there were any actual cognates in the video haha They were all later borrowings I believe. Great videos nonetheless :)
@GypsieSeeker

There are many Czech cognates to English words in this video. Cognates don’t have to be inherited, they can also be borrowed.

@@GypsieSeeker LINGUISTICS cognate: (of a word) having the same linguistic derivation as another; from the same original word or root (e.g., English is, German ist, Latin est, from Indo-European esti ). The words in the videos are borrowings. There is a large difference, hence the difference in terms.

@@maalmi “Borrowing” and “cognate” are not mutually exclusive. For example, “informace” is a borrowing (through French?) from Latin īnfōrmō and is also a cognate to the English word “information.”

@@GypsieSeeker I didn't say they were mutually exclusive, they're just not the same thing. Father is cognate with padre in Spanish. They come from the same IE root *ph₂tḗr. Neither was borrowed at any time to my knowledge. Was information not borrowed into English during/after the Norman invasion? Etymology is not an easy thing and I don't proclaim to be an expert, but the majority of the words in the video were very recent borrowings. All you have to do to prove it is read Old Czech, they won't be there and they weren't formed later in Czech, because they show no signs of Czech word formative structure. They're borrowings. We're arguing about facts here. haha, but I guess it is the internet...
