Here's a tip for the pulley puller...don't just tighten it down until you deform the pulley, just tighten so it no longer moves. Then, strike the Pulley shaft with a hammer, which will force the shaft downward and loosen the puller. Next Tighten the puller, rinse and repeat until the pulley is loose enough to pull off with hands. Easy peasy and no deformed pulley in the process. Hope this helps!

Amazes me how many ppl don’t realize those three holes are for a puller to put bolts threw and pop it off lol

I was new to this and was having such a good time with the two outer spindles... Then the middle / double pulley. Here is my trick that RBMods did as well. I rented a harmonic balancer puller from Advance Auto (free as long as you return) The pulleys had either two holes or three holes that lined up with the puller. HOWEVER my top pulley had Zero holes... I took the puller and made a pattern. I drilled three 5/16 holes about 3/4 inch out from center, keeping my holes closer for leverage. I purchased (3) six inch 5/16 bolts and three shorter four inch just in case. The top pulley was easy to install bolts and nuts on bottom. I had sprayed with PB blaster product over night and with a little adjusting to make sure I was pulling straight up... it came right off without damage to pulley (do NOT pull from outer edge of pulley ... it will bend it ) The bottom pulley took a little more effort to put the nut on the bottom but I took a piece of tape and the open end of a 9/16 wrench and slid it under the holes, then placed the bolts though the puller and screwed them onto the nuts. A little adjustment and off it came. I sure hope this helps others. I took the Harmonic Balancer puller back and got a full refund on their rent a tool program. Just wanted to share and hopefully save your some cussing haha

I'm not gonna say any negetive thing about how you did your job. Sometimes we have to do whatever we need to in order to get a task done. It's a shame those pulleys didn't come off clean. Just something to make us spend more of our hard earned money. You stuck with it to get it fixed, Soo Good Job.

Im still wondering if there is a method to remove them without destroying them? Anyway, thank you! Hope you have an awesome day!

@@skipjagger George, I just did the job tonight that you did on this video. Your video was a real help my friend because I didn't want to destroy my pulley(s). So what I did was unscrew the nuts from the bottom and I held the bolts with a wrench and released the spindle housing until the pulley discs were resting on the deck housing. Then I took a hammer to the spindle and knocked it through the pulley. In other words, I pushed the spindle out of the pulley instead of trying to pull the pulley off the spindle....... Hope that makes sense for you and for others as well...... shoot back a response if I need to explain further. It may help you or other save a buck or two by saving the pulley wheel...... Thanks for your video bro....... blessings

I bought a $40 two claw pulley puller and it popped it right off i didn't have to hammer nothing and the other guys almost destroyed the key from hammering the spindles shaft

I have a grasshopper mower midmount 322d. Had the same issue and now I need a new bottom pulley. The top one came off fine but the bottom one I ended up destroying. It’s a very terribly engineered design flaw. Nice video man. I was gonna record mine but there would have been some serious not so nice choice of words plus I kept being interrupted by family members lol. 👍👍👍

R Miller hahahaha! I thought I was the one one who has to re-record stuff like 15 times!!! why is it that as soon as you start recording something some random friend, neighbor or family member appears out of nowhere to stand in the way, make some banging/shuffling noises, talk loudly on the phone, or just stare at you so you cant get your words to come out right???... Hahahah!!

The pulleys i done doesn't have holes but the puller gets it anyways. You said the spindles have the holes but i know you mean the pulleys

Don't pull on the pulley, drive the spindle down. Am in the process of doing this now and had one pulley that was stuck. Beat on the spindle with a deadblow and it came off.
@skipjagger
@skipjagger 5 жыл бұрын
I was worried about the spindle mushrooming over. Turns out it didn't matter since it was destroyed anyway?!? I have to do one of the other spindle bearings this summer, I'll try that out first for sure. Another fellow, mentioned an air hammer, if the bearings were good I would be reluctant, but if its destroyed anyway??? Might as well give it a shot
@sj1roese
@sj1roese 5 жыл бұрын
@@skipjagger I would try it but be sure to use a deadblow soft faced hammer. wont mar the spindle in the slightest. I think that if the pulley is really froze on there it might not work, worth a try though. Also I ordered some decent bearings and should be able to have it back together for like $30 for each housing assembly. Keeping the old housing and old spindle (obviously you needed a new spindle too), just putting in new bearings and new hardware for mounting the housing to the deck.

Wish I had read this comment before I did mine the other day. 5 hours of hammering, heating, lubricating, more hammering, and prying with a jaw puller and I destroyed the pulley and it still would not come off. Ended up doing this in the end. Hitting the spindle from the top and letting the spindle shaft fall through the bottom. Lesson learned

It’s funny... you weren’t sure which pulley was on top...it’s your video :-), just scroll back and see which on had the holes ... turns out your were right in the long run. I’ve done a few of these but it’s been a while; I’m pretty sure I backed the nut off somewhat flush with the top, lubed up what I could and and hit it with maybe a 2x4 laying on it. Drove it through from the top. Thanks for the video.

Did you have to heat it up? Those things were on there tight!!!
@isostupedo
@isostupedo 5 жыл бұрын
I don’t remember how tight they were. Coincidentally enough, I changed one out on a 60” Lazer Z Next, yesterday and, you won’t like this, the pulley just popped off after taking off the nut. Also, on second thought, there’s no way to drive the spindle down without getting the pulley off first.

Actually, Lazer Z and Turf Tracer spindle setups are different. So it’s not apple to apples.

It took me a pulley or two before I learned heat, hammer around the spindle, repeat. The hammering makes the difference. It shocks it loose.

I would think not doing this before but if the shaft coins out the bottom you cold spray like pb blaster and hammer with a block of wood or brass punch and drive out the shaft and save the pulleys the key ways with keys was along the shaft you may damage the baring but your changing them anyway a air hammer might work as well

A bunch of guys have been saying to use an air hammer to remove the pulley. If the bearing isn't totally disintegrated and you are not trying to re-use the bearing, I suppose it may work, I would be surprised if it worked on my center hub, but maybe I have never used an air hammer worth its salt!!

@skipjagger
@skipjagger 3 жыл бұрын
It just kind of danced around, but didn't make much noise, the bearings were my bad so I think that may be why it didn't sound like a bunch of rocks in there! Hahahah the shaft must have had a little play in it, and wiggled around inside the inner race of that bearing and eventually wore a huge groove in it!!!???? That's where all that play came from

I gave it a few gentle kisses with a hammer and block of wood as well before I farted around with that puller (didn't record that because many people would have a problem with that! Hahahah), but no luck! Maybe next time I won't be as gentle! Did you replace the center bearing tower or an outside one?

Wrong way to do that bro. The three holes in the pulley are made for a harmonic balancer puller. You put bolt and nuts in there and send it. I pulled my pulleys two days ago no bent parts at all

Yeah. Angled pry bar - air hammer with bottom "tension" or 4lb "whammer" & nut back on top/ same under pressure/ and "WOMP" it (1st)... Destroy pulleys last
@skipjagger
@skipjagger 4 жыл бұрын
Are you saying essentially lift up on the bottom of the pulley and drive the spindle down to protect the spindle bearings? (In other words I am questioning the meaning of bottom tension, just wanted to to make sure I was understanding you)
@skipjagger
@skipjagger 4 жыл бұрын
I didn't record it, but I backed the spindle nut off so it was above the top of the spindle and give it a few good whacks with a piece of wood and a 3lb sledge. Unfortunately nothing budged either, but I also didn't want to destroy something so I probably could have swung a little harder.

How does a air hammer remove the pulleys?
@skipjagger
@skipjagger 5 жыл бұрын
I poked around and found a few videos. Wouldn't that damage the bearings? Not that most people would be doing that when there bearings are still good, but i woukd assume the manufacturer would have a better way to remove the pulleys.

toro pulleys are like whats found on a trucks power steering pump. Borrowed parts store power steering pump puller kit and mine came right off with no damage. Do not use this type pulley remover,get the right kit.
@skipjagger
@skipjagger 4 жыл бұрын
The power steering pulleys I have removed have a lip on the pulley Spud that the puller grabs onto. The ones on my exmark are smooth, I have a power steering pulley puller set but it wouldn't work with these stinking things! I wonder if your Toro set up is different from mine? Maybe a different year machine?
