Title: Tracing the Origins of Japanese Swords: The "Ancient Swords" Series
The cradle of Oriental civilization, ancient Mesopotamia in the Middle East, marked the beginning of the journey with bronze swords from Israel and Syria. The legacy then passed through ancient China, the Wei state during the Three Kingdoms period, and from there, it made its way to ancient Korean Gaya and finally to Yamatai. The su-kan-to-no-tachi (ring-pommel swords) were brought to Japan in the 6th century during the Asuka period, when Prince Shōtoku played a significant role. This era coincided with the Shōsōin treasures, which included hoko (spears), chokutō (straight swords), and the tōsui-tachi (swords with spinous pommels) and entu-tachi (swords with round pommels), styles closely associated with the powerful Soga and Mononobe clans of the time. The "Ancient Swords" series traces the origins of Japanese swords, culminating in a grand finale.
But wait, there's an unexpected twist! "Please authenticate this ring-pommel sword's kashira (pommel)." A viewer of the Ginza Chōshūya Japanese Sword Specialty Store's "Ancient Swords" series sent a small package. Upon opening the wooden box inside, what appeared was-
A golden phoenix, still shining brilliantly after 1,400 years!! Witnessing the glimmer of gold that transcended time and space, everyone was left speechless by its beauty... "Is this real...?" The first impression that inadvertently slipped out was sharply addressed by our company president, Fukami, as he always does.
Don't miss the grand finale of the Ancient Swords series!
su-kan-to-no-tachi (ring-pommel swords): These are ancient Japanese swords characterized by a ring-shaped pommel at the end of the handle. The term "su-kan-to-no-tachi" is a direct transliteration of the Japanese term "素環頭大刀" (su-kan-tō-no-tachi).
chokutō (straight swords): Chokutō are ancient Japanese swords that predate the curved blades typically associated with later Japanese swords. The term is a direct transliteration of the Japanese word "直刀" (chokutō).
tōsui-tachi (swords with spinous pommels) and entu-tachi (swords with round pommels): These terms refer to specific styles of ancient Japanese swords, characterized by the shape of their pommels. "Tōsui-tachi" is a transliteration of "頭椎大刀" (tōsui-tachi), and "entu-tachi" is a transliteration of "円頭大刀" (entō-tachi).
Soga and Mononobe clans: The Soga and Mononobe were powerful aristocratic clans during the Asuka period (538-710 AD) in ancient Japan, known for their political influence and rivalry.
kashira (pommel): Kashira is the term for the pommel or end cap of a Japanese sword's handle. It is a direct transliteration of the Japanese word "頭" (kashira).
