I buy ALL my frames the last decade from ebay and I pay anything from 1$ to 3$ maximum for the frame only. Then I take my frame to a local store and I put the glass crystal with the filters and all, and I pay like 15~20 euros per glass, thus 30~40 euros for the pair (about 35~45$ for the crystals I choose). And this way I have a beautiful frame that is almost free of charge and I have high quality of glass with filters for a reasonable price.

If Luxottica was american it would be surely claimed as an "american dream success". Everybody would be saing Luxottica's CEO is the eyewear's Steve Jobs. The fact is that it is an italian industry and it makes americans realize they are not the only country that can have a dominant position on their own market!

There are legal monopolies and they’re illegal monopolies this one is illegal because it was obtained not buy a superior product but by buying up the competition which should not have been allowed according to the Sherman antitrust act was also obtained by illegally selling your products for less than cost in order to drive your competitor at a business and or buying up the distributors and then refusing to sell your competitors product. The solution is Boycott Italian products like those from Luxottica and man Frodo and it’ll be even easier toy void giving them our tourism business now that the coronavirus has become rampant in Italy and just a matter of three days. Not so. Apple has Samsung and Google and other makers for phones. Google sells A LOT of Chromebooks and Dell still sells billions in computers. Then you have the software/OS. Comparing this asshole to Jobs is way off. If this were an American company, it would be broken up. They did it to AT&T and they only got to “get back together” after other long distance carriers and, later on, VOIP providers came along. It made things cheaper without quality suffering. This is all an illusion. Why do they make/decision Chanel glasses? It’s all plastic. Prices are up and people pay because they HAVE to, especially with prescriptions. “It is American. It’s an American Brand owned by Italians.” It’s not an American company and they aren’t made in America. This is a monopoly and it should be illegal.

Interesting... but only looked at from the perspective of the frame manufacturer - which I suppose is right given that the frame brands are most visible to people. But it really is only one part of glasses manufacturing. Be interesting to see a report from 60 minutes on the lens side of things (Essilor International S.A.). But I suppose the good is that it does seem like more work and technologies are at play in lens making...

I retorted to scan Ebay, about 7 years ago, and try to find plenty of B&L models, which had decent prices, and was lucky enough to get many of them at absurd prices, some of them at decent ones, and a few with high prices, such as a 1965 5022 which had a documented history. Made a group of them for a very good price, and even added a few equally cheap Luxottica models. And let me tell you, I still use the B&L ones every day, and the Luxo ones have gone to shite in different moments.

on the 70's-80's you could get a pair of RayBan and you was sure that the 2 pieces of glass in front of you where FKing top of the line made by Bausch & Lomb, the same company who was making optics for the military, microscopes, cameras! Now you pay over $200 for a set of glasses that maybe will last a couple of years, the glass will start showing signs of degradation and when you call to ask for warranty they will say "we don't have parts/we don't longer manufacture parts, but we can sell you a new pair"... Be smart and hunt a good set of RayBan made on the late 70's with the B&L logo engraved, get some broken frames for spare parts and as long as you take good care they will last you a lifetime! (I'm looking for some good ambermatic for range practice!)

It's really not that different from the high end fashion industry e.g. LVMH owns many of the luxury labels in clothing, accessories and perfumes. At least with glasses you get many years' wear out of them. Years ago an optometrist told me that most glasses frames come out of the same factory in Italy and yes there has always been a huge mark-up. So take note of some competitors and support them. Some great boutique brands now coming out of Japan e.g. Owndays who have a range of frames and lenses that fit and if you have a standard script, make up your glasses in-store in 20 minutes. Ausralia has some nice boutique hand-made frames too. But they are expensive and lenses in Australia have a big mark-up. Looking back on what I paid a few years ago, it looks like competition from online shopping overseas is starting to force local stores to lower their prices, and it's about time. Either that or it's simply that new technology with tough plastics etc. has made manufacturing cheaper.

I’m concerned about the quality of LENSES from market stalls vs those in departmental stores vs those in optical shops. Esp when it comes to polarized lenses or anti-UV ones, how do we know they are really good? Sunglasses can range from $20 plus to $200 plus. Are the $20 plus quality the same? Luxottica makes glasses for 0.5billion ppl so there are surely other companies making dubious lenses. How are consumers to know? The video mainly talked about the FRAMES which doesn’t even matter to eye health. Could someone enlighten me on how to source for reasonably-priced glasses with good-quality lenses?

I have Eyemed vision insurance and went to Lenscrafters which is one of their providers. After everything, exam and choosing my eyewear, the bill they tried to shove down my throat was $459.00 after applying insurance. In all my years of wearing glasses, from age 12 to now 57, I have never seen such a rip off in my life. I was flabbergasted at the cost. I had to argue with them to get the price down. I have never seen anything so ridiculous in my life. I'm not rich and made of money. I need a bargain. These companies are not for the average American or little guy struggling everyday financially to make it. This is not right, especially those who desperately need glasses and are not in the category of the "rich and elite " group. This sickens me !!

@@lisamarielund6292 Thanks for your response Lisa 😊. I told them I only wanted standard progressive lenses instead of the premium type that they were trying to push on me . I didn't need that . The standard are just fine for me . She spewed at me that "I guess you want pop bottle lenses then ", which was uncalled for . She was treating me horrible and talking down to me like I was dirt . I asked the eye doctor and she said standard were fine. I told the lady at LensCrafters that and she was angry 😠 because I was right. They couldn't make a ton of money on me . I told her I wanted standard or forget it . She was mean to me the whole time and argued with me. I got my way though and she hesitantly made out a new and lower bill for me. This is corporatism that needs to be brought back to capitalism. Good ol' competition, when replaced with what we see here, eventually becomes, well, what we see here.
@vanillaexplosion99
@vanillaexplosion99 9 жыл бұрын
alphanatrix "brought back to capitalism" you said. This is video is about capitalism. This is what happens after capitalism runs its course unregulated;Capitalism unabridged leads to monopoly after enough time. Usually you get two or three players(oligopoly) or even one in some markets(the winners then time 4 the spoils for the victors) in the end and price competition ends. Capitalism is not exactly synonymous with free enterprise. Capitalism is about who has the capital$$$$$(so this system rules out the common man as general rule). Like in most major cities for example try to start a taxi business with one car,a yellow paint job and sign and small capital;You cannot because you have to buy a permit and be given a badge for your car and that badge may cost you up to one million dollars(so you need a fleet of cars to justify a million dollar permit not one or a few or even a dozen). Large taxi companies lobby and lobbied for the city regs so no little guys can compete. Lets say you make great tasting potato chips and you want to sell them to convenience stores,well you need big money to pay for spacing for Frito Lay buys all the space allocated for chips and has deeper pockets. The convenience store wants to sell the space more than sell a superior product from a local that does not rent space. The days of small mom & pops running stores and small privately owned manufacturers with no multinational or conglomerate connection is virtually history in all industries. One giant business most overlooked as being locked down as far as competition is the US Federal Government. Yes two parties or two businesses(yes the government is a $$$$ making business for profit to redistribute for power) that have no other competition and legislate to keep it that way. In elections you are told by the corporate media that a vote for a weaker third party is a wasted vote. The two parties in many respects seem the same. Yes the USA has one more governing party than a communist country or dictatorship. If we live long enough maybe we can witness if Ayn Rand was correct in that monopolies cannot last the long haul because of being unflexible. I postulate that unflexibility can be overcome by crony capitalism;And a revolution is the only way to cure that disease.
@alphanatrix
@alphanatrix 9 жыл бұрын
vanillaexplosion99 Couldn't agree more. As a bit of a libertarian myself, I often follow along with Ron Paul's line of thinking, who in turn has quoted Ayn Rand as well, and agrees with her at least up to a point. Regarding same-sex marriage, his way of thinking is as follows: "I don't care if you marry a zebra. The question is, what has government got to do with it?". LOL - There's something to that! We have become so "Government first in everything", that it's the one hand often overlooked in the problem. Corporatism is the combination of big money from corporations mixed with big government to the mutual "benefit" of both parties involved. When, government, (the referee) is allowed to start carrying the ball itself, (such as in corporatism) it's the beginning of the end of freedom for everyone. And you better believe big money is part of that. But if, on the other hand, government is held accountable in the same way we wish corporations to be, then the back-scratching between big corp and bog gov would have to cease. True capitalism is exactly what I think you and I actually want. Real competition between small and large players wherein freedom reigns and government does its proper referee job and is not bought out by lobbyists. It's Lobbying that needs to be stopped in its tracks so that big corps can;t get the jump on anyone else in the field. I agree with you. It's a two sided issue. And to me I think it's a question of who is the more central player. Is it the big money playing puppeteer to the government or is it actually the legal system of law and government that is the great entity playing "Nice guy", all the while knowing these corporations have to have their "blessings" in order to accomplish what they desire. Which is really the deeper source of power in the end? I think it's government. I think Corporations know that they can buy from a corrupt system what they want because it is now corrupt. That's not freedom's fault and that is therefore by default not TRUE capitalism's fault. True capitalism is the natural by-product of true freedom. I agree with you in everything you said with the simple addition that it is important that we do not throw out capitalism (properly protected [refereed] freedom), when in truth we mean corporatism, the beast created from the combination of big government and big business. To me, it is government that need to be smacked up side the head so that corporatism can be ended and the little guys can get a fighting chance. Things would level out more properly and the fairness and "social justice" people who THINK they want socialism will actually get much more of what they want. It all.. starts... with... freedom!

$150 for a pair of rayban sunglasses you have to be rich for that? if you makes 8.38 per hour whic is minuim wage and work 40 hours per week you can afford a pair in esse ten one week of work. you can actually aford a pair in 18 hours of working which is not even 3 full shifts, lets include playing taxes so lets say 20 hours so that 8 hours per day not even three full shifts since 8 times three is 24 hours and you can have a pair thats three days of working were is your logic good sir? and this is minuim wage the lowest you can make many people make more then that sir.

japneet singh ... if you make 8 dollars an hour then you shouldn't be buying expensive sunglasses anyways. You need your money for basic necessities. That's the problem in America and many other places, ppl spend money they don't have on things they don't need and then they are in debt.
@rizkiyoist
@rizkiyoist 6 жыл бұрын
No, if you make $8 an hour and in one day you work 8 hours, that means you make $64 a day. Obviously you need food and other necessities which will only let you save maybe $10 if you're lucky. You'll then proceed to save up for 15 days, only for sunglasses.
@heww3960
@heww3960 5 жыл бұрын
@@rizkiyoist If you have fixed expenses (including food) at 54 dollar a day when you make 8d per hour, then you have to high fixed expenses. Then the 150d sunglasses is not your biggest problem, it is your high fixed expenses you shall look at. But with that said, i do not really agree with japneet either. Just because you can afford if you prioritize it do not mean it is not a overpriced luxery item. The rich kids can buy without thinking about it, the poor has to prioritize it. Therefore it is for the rich, even many poor has it too.

Luxottica cheapened one of the most iconic American brands with their purchase of Ray-Ban in 1999. Consider investing in vintage Bausch & Lomb Ray-Ban sunglasses. You’ll find some of the best were made between the mid-1940s and mid-1970s. B&L’s craftsmanship, quality and advanced lens technology are unsurpassed (even by today’s standards). At least you’ll get what you pay for with vintage B&L Ray-Bans!

@jessicaupp5719
@jessicaupp5719 10 жыл бұрын
Desiree Randolph That is incorrect. The courts have adhered to a "90-60-30 rule" when defining a monopoly. If a firm has a 90% market share they would absolutely be defined as a monopoly, 60% would most likely be conisdered a monopoly, and 30% is definitely not a monopoly. Since this firm has a 80% market share they undoubtedly would be classified as a monopoly. To be considered an oligopoly the market would consist of a few large producers whose combined market share is 40% or more. I am referencing the 19th edition of Microeconomics: Principles, Problems, and Policies.

***** the problem with this which i think was not addressed directly at the end is that, we are willing to pay such a high price because it is the only way we can get glasses of that quality. If not we would have to go with glasses of lower quality. If there was more competition this would not be the case. I can see how all this can benefit consumers by concentrating resources in such a way so long that the head of the company has his heart in the right place. But how as, consumers, can we know that this guy is not making abnormal profits? So you are selling a luxury product, but still is it OK to make abnormal profits off people who are capable of buying a luxury product? The problem here is you have made luxury products more expensive because you have taken out all the competition, which in turn is not good for the consumer as you can set what ever price you like. This cannot be right, as if all corporations are like this, we as consumers will be enslaved, and have no choice! please respond

Not really. American labor costs just as much, if not more, depending on the industry. Oakley’s “Made in USA” sunglasses (produced in California) retail for just as much as most of Luxottica’s “Made in Italy” brands. The US hardly manufactures any eyewear these days, and when it does it’s premium-priced. China has its own monopoly on affordable eyewear…

I'll tell you how they get away with saying "Made in Italy" on the inside of the crap Oakleys you are wearing as well as all the other brands they own. They have all the injected crap plastic made in China along with the rest of the material and then ship it to Italy to have it assembled, hence "Made" in Italy. Don't be fooled. Ask yourself this, is there ANYTHING about an Oakley that looks Italian?! Think about a Ferrari, Lamborghini and even the damn Vespa. And the only way to get Oakleys made in the US is if you own a Delorean or you are buying vintage frames from the early 90's and earlier.
