60 Minutes, the most successful American television broadcast in history, began its 52nd season in September. Offering hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments and profiles of people in the news, the broadcast began in 1968 is still a hit in 2020. 60 Minutes makes Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 nearly every week and was the #1 weekly television broadcast three times last season.
The program still averages more than 10 million viewers, more than double the audience of its nearest network news magazine competitor. The average audience for a 60 Minutes broadcast is 150% higher than those of the network morning news programs; the audience dwarfs the number of viewers drawn by the most popular cable news programs.
About a million more people listen to the 60 Minutes radio simulcast in several major cities and on its companion podcast. Tens of thousands each week experience 60 Minutes online. The broadcast’s segments can be watched at 60Minutes.com and on the CBS All Access app. Its webcast, 60MinutesOvertime.com, offers content originally produced for the web, including behind-the-scenes video about the production of 60 Minutes stories and timely archival segments.
60 Minutes has won every major broadcast award. Its 25 Peabody and 150 Emmy awards are the most won by any single news program. It has also won 20 duPont-Columbia University journalism awards. Other distinguished journalism honors won multiple times include the George Polk, RTDNA Edward R. Murrow, Investigative Reporters and Editors, RFK Journalism, Sigma Delta Chi and Gerald Loeb awards.
60 Minutes premiered on CBS September 24, 1968. Bill Owens is the program’s executive producer. The correspondents and contributors of 60 Minutes are Sharyn Alfonsi, Anderson Cooper, John Dickerson, Norah O’Donnell, Scott Pelley, Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker and L. Jon Wertheim.

i was hired as a cook for a NW Vietnam vets party in marblemount wa many years ago. approximately 200 people. vets and spouses. most wore their gear. at least 20% were women in uniform. i had never thought much about all of the support it takes to put troops in the field. to see all of these tough sob's come to tears and show so much love and respect to these women had an impact on me. we all cried and hugged, paid respect to the fallen, and rejoiced for being here and alive. they earned their memorial in spades. thanks for posting this 60 minutes.

My father and I took my Vietnam veteran grandfather to Washington D.C. several years ago for the 1st time for him to see the Vietnam War Memorial Wall (as well as the women's memorial). He got drafted in the late 1960s, and he got injured by shrapnel from a land mine (in addition to getting shot), so he got sent home and received a Purple Heart. However, 6 of his buddies didn't make it back home, so before the trip he made a list of all of their names and where they were located on the wall. As he found each on the wall, he got very emotional knowing that he managed to come home (though injured), get married, have 3 sons, and live another 50 years, but 6 of his friends didn't.

I can't say enough good things about our military nurse's especially our Nam vet ones. They as well as all the Nam vets did a remarkable job under the most difficult circumstances. All of them deserve our highest respect. Now all I can say is a very, very, very, long overdue WELCOME HOME TO ALL! Thanks to all now serving, those who have, and those who will in the future. Awesome! Welcome home! I am a Vietnam Veteran who served on guided missile destroyers during 2 and 1/2 WestPac deployments. Seven months off the coast of South Vietnam and eight months off the coast of North Vietnam after the Easter Offensive of 1972.

I hit 75 this year, I was a medic in the AF from 1968-1972. Was at small hospital in North Dakota (804th Med Group), and worked with Captain Mealy. She had come back from Vietnam, an O.R. nurse that I really came to respect, more and more, over the years I was there. I was never sent over, so lucky in that respect, but the survivor remorse is still alive at times, when it's really quite, and I'm just sitting and thinking about different things that affected, effected and infected my life. I know I can't be the only one.

The women veterans from Vietnam deserved that statue, and the recognition, but should have had it sooner. I lost friends over there, and more died from the result of Agent Orange when they returned home.

Yep .. my tears flow too .. I was drafted as a Conscientious Objector .. served state-side working in a hospital at Ft. Hood, TX Orthopedic Tech, (bones) .. imagine what we do .. go to war slaughter a lot of innocent people in other countries .. and many of our own come back maimed for life physically and emotionally! We're worried about a virus .. and we shut down the economy .. and make plans for the next foolish war! What's wrong with US?

My grandfather was a front line Feild Surgeon in the US Army during WWII. They would sort the casualties into three categories, can't save, shouldn't save & will save. When I asked him about the "shouldn't save" he explained "when a soldier sets off a land mine he was trying to disarm, what can you do, no arms, no face, no eyes, what can you do?". They had the ambulance drivers inform the medics in the field to give the "can't save's" & "shouldn't save's" enough morphine to send them home so that the enlisted men at their field hospital didn't have to use morphine & alcohol to make them stop screaming. As for PTSD, my grandfather drank a fifth of rye every night to sleep for three years after the war...

I just finished reading Kristin Hannah’s book “The Women”; although it is classified as fiction, she clearly had done her homework about this same topic: young women going to war, living through unspeakable horrors and coming home to derision by an ungrateful, ignorant country-their country.Combat nurses were, indeed, the unsung heroes of the terrible that debacle that was the war in Vietnam.

How about we take care of the injured living veterans. You know, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. So clearly we should raise alarm about the way the VA doesnt take care of injured soldiers. We should save money and help veterans. Close all VAs and let veterans seek help from the private sector. I doubt any sane Vet would disagree with this.

While I feel it’s important to memorialize those who have sacrificed for others in the line of duty I agree we must do more to accommodate those living with the consequences brought on by service. Maybe instead of the current administration feeding the military an extra $50 billion that money could’ve found its way to the VA.

@@MerwinARTist I couldnt agree more. I think we should focus on America(n)s first. We have alot of people here who need help, we should focus on nation building here. That still doesnt solve the issue with helping Veterans that already exist and deserve our utmost respect and admiration for doing a job that many are unable or too afraid. I sincerely mean this when I say it, thank you for what you have endured and done for our nation. Every American owes you a debt of gratitude and appreciation. The least we can do is honor you with a quiet repose and healthcare.
