Prelude FLNG (Floating Liquefied Natural Gas) is a floating platform for the extraction and production of liquefied natural gas. In fact, it is a full-fledged LNG plant housed on a ship. Its length is 488 meters, width is 74 meters, height is 105 meters, and its displacement reaches 600 thousand tons. The Prelude one is of the largest floating structures in human history, making even giant tankers, cruise ships and aircraft carriers seem small by comparison.
The ship was built by the Samsung / Technip consortium for Royal Dutch Shell and is currently operating at the eponymous Prelude field off the coast of Australia.
Thanks for watching!

Still not in operation AFAIK. A shore based LNG plant at James Price Point as originally planned would be up and running and returning a profit to shareholders by now. ( Yes, I am posting from Western Australia, where the state government definotely preferred the onshore processing). On another note, this guy sounds exactly like Sky from Skyships Eng channel. If so, I love that channel and recommend it is well worth checking out of you are into aviation, especially Russian aviation. Great channel.

The birthing pains of nascent technology. The _Prelude_ may prove trouble-laden but, the next generation of ships will be constructed having learned lessons therefrom. As a first son in my large family, I can attest that perfecting the formation of an adapted product (evolution) takes time, trial, and failure. Our family's youngest is a veritable financial wizard; a faithful and contemplative Catholic with a rigid code of ethics and principles; and a 6'4" monster of a body builder but, he wouldn't have been possible were it not for me.

It's hardly a new idea, the use of FPSO's in the Oil industry (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) has been around for decades. Most were not bespoke vessels, rather old Oil Tankers that were adapted for the job. They would sit on a well head and process the crude, then store it for collection by a fleet of tankers and this still happens. It seems totally sensible that the Gas production industry goes the same way, although more equipment is required for the liquification of the gas. This equipment is also required for the transportation of the gas in LNG carriers as the liquid gas if not stored below it's boiling point, will become a gas again and upset the storage arrangements of the carrier. It is obviously only financially viable for use in some of the more out of the way gas fields such as this one off the NW coast of OZ. Here in the UK we are lucky and have enormous natural gas reserves in the North sea oil fields so shore based processing facilities are a viable option. Indeed Shell operate one on the coast of Norfolk.

totally agreed ....the turret concept have been used for decades on FPSO's. If you want to look at a success story regarding the FLNG concept and in operation, look at FLNG Hilli Episeyo (Golar) - off the Cameroonian cost, maintaining a 100% commercial uptime since it first starting production in 2018.
