The Late Brake Show

The Late Brake Show

Күн бұрын

Welcome to The Late Brake Show. When is a Ferrari 250 GTO not a Ferrari 250 GTO? When it was built over 15 years (back in the 1990s) using parts of crashed other Ferraris. And when it is twice the power of the original 250 GTO, which still remains the world's most valuable car (the last one selling in 2018 at auction for $70 million).
Jonny borrows owner and builder Will Tomkins' (co-owner of www.project-heaven.com) Ferrari 'speciale', which was born from buying hand made alloy bodyshell, a modified chassis of a fire damaged Ferrari 400i and the V12 of a 575 Maranello. The latter would have had 515bhp when new in 2002, but Will modified the throttle bodies, ditched the emissions exhaust system and spent time dyno tuning it to produce 601bhp - twice the power of an original 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO!
Stop. It's time for The Late Brake Show.
Is this a recreation? Is it a replica? We call it the ultimate Ferrari hot-rod, with the looks of a 1960s racer but the 210mph performance of a millennium Modena product. Will built it to use and abuse, so Jonny drove the car on road and then on track (airstrip - he couldn't afford Silverstone) to breathe in the emissions and fever of a properly sorted race-bred resto-mod.
Thanks to Project Heaven for letting Jonny burn through 130 litres of super unleaded in under 100 miles for the purposes of video content.
This car is for sale for a fraction of what an original 250 GTO would cost you: vandp.net/sales/1608/1969-ferr...

I love how resto mods encompass everything that was great about a classic then add in some modern power which ultimately gives you a raggable collectable. Most 250s are hidden from view only to be seen by billionaire owners... This one is on the back lanes being given the beans. 👍

Brakes is the most important thing from a useability stand point, many classics have enough power even for today but the brakes on pretty much anything pre '80's were just not good enough to stop you fast enough if a modern car anchors up in front of you, it didn't matter back then the tyres were crap and everyone was in the same boat but these days, brakes, suspension and tyres need the "restomod" treatment more than anything else.

@@Jaxs2 that's fair enough. I think if it's a bit of a frankenstien to start with and the history isn't obtainable then why not go the resto mod route but a car with history and all parts present should be preserved.

@@Jaxs2 When was the last time you saw a genuine one on the road or track? That's what the point is, the guy wanted a 250 and now he has the closest thing he can get that he can rag the shit out of, he built it for himself, not classic car nerds.

I saw an ad for a 550 engine for $20,000 once and I get I could get a burnt Ferrari for another $20,000 and then go from there with parts. I take my '65 Alfa Romeo Spider out and whip it through the canyons at least twice a month, and she loves it. Don't care the paint has some blemishes, don't mind the carpet isn't original color, not concerned that the wire wheel covers aren't factory. So refreshing to see an owner of something special encouraging their car to be driven how it was intended. There's nothing sadder than seeing a high performance car (or anything for that matter) just sitting there or just used for a pootle before retreating to it's hermetically-sealed garage. More of this kind of thing please!

That is a proper interior if you take it to the races. Fluffy carpets and leather everything with in car entertainment is not what you want for the track scene. That would be wrong.

@Zanpaa 3 жыл бұрын
@@pdsnpsnldlqnop3330 And yet the 250 GTO is described at the start of the video as the last true race car and road car. And this isn't going to race anywhere, so the weight of door panels and carpeting won't stop it from winning. There's no excuse for not having an interior here. It's not a racing car.

@@Zanpaa This car will be on show at places like Goodwood. Trust me, cup holders, electric motorised everything, fluffy carpets and some big sat nav home entertainment system would be the wrong look. Whether it races at Goodwood or just sits looking pretty in the paddock barely matters, it is a car for that world. Plus it can be driven by someone who owns a real 250 but doesn't want to crash it. So it can make it onto the track even if it has no series to go in. Fun. Cup holders. Fun.
