I started on a 600cc bike. Didn’t have a problem. Just don’t ride betting your limits and you’ll be fine. Don’t ride with guys that will force you to do things you’re not ready for. Respect the bike and you’ll be just fine.

Yeah age doesn't matter when it comes to CC's it comes to skills and respect. You can always start on a 600 but if you have no experience and no idea of what the bike can actually do. Starting on a smaller displacement bike for at a year is always advised. Unless your country requires you to start smaller and build your way up. In that situation you just have to follow those guidelines.

I started on an 05 R6. I put 42K miles on it in 2 years and I never went down. I think it's more about your mentality than it is about it being a 600cc. I think most people won't have the same disipline as I did when I first started, but after the 1.5 years, I was passing my friends with 1000cc bikes in the corners, I was scraping my feet, I was learning about good throttle control and body position and most importantly, I respected the machine. I learned it's limits. If you I could do it, so can you.

Before asking questions, yammie is referring to 600cc fully faired sport bikes and he stressed the type of bike multiple times during the video. Of course a 600cc dual sport, enduro, adv, naked or cruiser is a totally different story and every type of bike can be not ideal as a first bike for several reasons other than the power (the seat height or the weight for example.)
@frogger2011ify

I think the most important distinction is the engine type. Any inline 4 or 3 is going to be a very very steep learning curve. The largest problem a person is going to have with most big twins for example nos the bikes are huge and heavy, like you said any bike can be a bad beginner bikes for a person. It depends alot on the situation.
@watermalone5782

@@frogger2011ify for 3 cyls, they are not common, used in the mv f3 675 and 800, mt09, daytona 675. There are some others but those are the most known. The mt is the most terrifying and the 3 cylinders are more exclusive and a 2 or 4. The 4s are used in lots of bikes and have low bottom torque, which makes slow riding hard. That makes the rider go speed and that could get them killed. Most 2 cylinders are the best for the starters. No one starting on motorcycles are gonna buy big twins. Everything depends on the rider and how they learn.

Bernard Marchand that’s true but you could also say that a 2 cyl, having torque in way lower rpms than a 4 cyl, can make your bike lose control even in 2nd/3rd gear while accelerating in the middle of the corner (a beginner doesn’t have a lot of throttle control). On the other hand, a 4 cyl runs relatively smooth under 7-8k rpms, giving you some sort of power switch. You gotta have the “head” to use it properly of course. And you have to find a bike with way less than 120 hp. A 600 Hornet or a CB650R could be ideal.

There's a good reason Super Sports (600 and 1000) are so expensive to insure. Insurance companies crush numbers and those numbers tell them SS's crush their riders. And as an old timer I now realise low end power that gets you ahead of traffic is a lot more fun on the streets then top end power that gets you in jail or the hospital.

I got a 55 kW MT-07 as a starter. Only been driving it for a week but I really like it. Enough power to really feel it, but not crazy "you'll die in an instant" power. In late 90's my parent's friend bought a big displacement suzuki for his first bike when he was 28 years old. Everybody in that group of friends was telling him that he should have bought a smaller bike, since he was a beginner. After 3 days he had an accident at a very slow speed. A woman in a car hit him. He had internal bleeding and died at the hospital. Even if it wasn't his fault, he still suffered. The moral of this story is that no matter what, you are still in traffic where anything can happen. I personally recommend getting on a motorcycle as early as possible. I am going to be 16 this November and I myself am currently in the middle of completing A1 motorcycle license. At home I have a 50cc Tomos Apn 4 (moped) which I am going to drive as my first motorcycle. But anyways ride safe!

So I've been looking at alternatives like the Honda cb500r or Ninja 650, Suzuki 650sv Gladius, or honda's 700n dct. It's become extremely difficult to find a decent used bike under 5 grand in 2022. Even smashed up bikes most want s min of 4 or 5 g's. I think the government might be trying to phase them out for electric's which cost 2x or 3x more, which makes sense what they're proposing with cars, the shutoff button law enforcement & criminals have. Sorry for getting a little off topic but you get where I'm coming from. Would like your input thnx

8:30 ABS is a $300 solution for beginner rider panic-braking. You can still learn controlled braking if the punishment for locking the wheels is ABS-pumping instead of going down. I locked the front wheel my third day of riding a 300cc at 45 mph and I felt the ABS kick in. 18000 miles later and I've never locked the front besides that one time. If it didn't have ABS and I went down from locking the front (which I know is my fault) I probably would never have rode again 🤷 I'm surprised you don't preach about ABS more often because imo it's a better safety/dollar value than a riding jacket.
@BlytheToMeetYou
@BlytheToMeetYou 3 жыл бұрын
This man is speaking straight facts. Abs is almost heaven sent for modern sports bikes. I learned to ride sports bikes on a 98 CBR 600 and boy do I wish I had abs. One of the first times I took it out I saw a family friend in his 2ss Camaro and I followed up but when he stopped (I didn’t understand front brake use at the time) I locked up the rear and almost slid into him. Abs would have definitely helped that situation.

I have a bad habit of locking the rear more than the front. Have locked the front only twice, but both times were in sudden panic stops. The rear however, while I've been much better with it this year, my first two years of riding I was getting the ABS going off on that rear brake fairly often. lol While I was using both brakes, I think my issue was that I was just doing more with my rear brake than my front brake, hence always triggering the rear ABS. I eventually learned how much more I can push the front brake before the ABS goes off on it, so I almost never trigger the ABS these days anymore.

Geshmaal yes I’d like to know as well. I’ve started out here on a 2007 Yamaha FZ6 (the Fazer) and I feel like it makes a very good beginner bike (for someone who has some self control). As long as you aren’t driving it aggressively it is very mild mannered, with plenty of down low torque and comfortable ergonomics. However if you do want to get up and move it is very capable and willing to do that as well, just get the rpms up to around 8000 and the engine turns into a screaming little monster and takes off. I’d love for Yammie to try one out and see what he thinks.

I’m now on a 2014 FZ6R and like what Ryan said, the bike would be a great beginner bike if you take it slow but also has the capability to be a rocket. I’ve done sprockets, exhaust, PCV, and even went as far as changing the timing and cams. The bike has about the same engine as an R6 so if you put the work in it’ll be just as powerful and now I race my friends drag bike with my 6R

I do want to let you know the transmission is a little clunky, mostly between 1st and 2nd, but it’s not as bad as a lot of people online say. Also from 2007 and up they have a revised (and better looking, IMO) speedometer/tachometer assembly and improved fuel mapping.

I was deciding between that and a Ninja 400, but then I saw my 650 V-Strom, looked at the specs, and just had to have it. Love it soooooo much. Hard to start with, cause it's a little heavy for a first bike. Also, pretty wide and long. The traction control, ABS, clutch, brakes, sound, and feel of it really made me fall in love with it. I put some guardrails and a top case on it. Looooove how flickable it is, considering the weight and length. I definitely get schooled by most other riders through twisties, but I'm not really in it for the speed. If I had more skill, I could definitely keep up though. Just not quite there yet.

I started my license on a ninja250r and then a vtr250 and later upgraded to a fz6r and derestricted it and did power modifications and honestly comparing it to my friends cbr600rr it wasnt much of a difference if any after all my mods... He really only gets me on the top end as i top out around 240kmh. So my advice is get a bike like a mt07 or fz6r and then when you get comfortable and used to it or even bored then you can mod it, or derestrict if thats an option instead of jumping on a 600-1000 and learning nothing instead of becoming an instant death trap. Bought an R6 at 15. 8 months later I’m 16 now and I’ve never been pulled over, dropped it, or crashed yet sooo yeah it’s doable but I did have 9 months of dirt bike experience

I got a 750 as my first bike, I started riding at the age of 25, I always respected the machine and still do, and I haven't had any problems so far. But I do know that I had a few encounters that could have ended badly (due to other drivers) if I was riding like a manic and always speeding.

Sure. My very first bike was a Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 . Love it. I'm 6'4" and 310 & dont fit comfortably on small/short frames.

how much lessons do you need to take in the usa in the Nederlands we need at leats 20 and learn one a 650 cc bike
@graviity1603
@graviity1603 3 жыл бұрын
There is no requirement for a lesson in the usa. We have a written test and a riding test but it doesn't matter how you learned how to ride as long you pass both. Once you pass both you get your motorcycle license which covers all motorcycles. Most people take a one course called the MSF course which covers the riding test if you pass the course. After that you just have to go to the department of motor vehicles to take your written test and take a picture for your license.

Avond Alucard, in the USA they only have to take a version of our 'AVB' exams + written exam to get their license. The lack of expertise that gets you is so weird compared to what we (almost the whole of Europe I believe) have to pass for our license. But yeah, we learn on 600cc-ish bikes. But going full throttle on your own bike is still going to be different then driving for your exams. Stay safe!

Samuraii 1244 in Maryland the MSF covers both the riding and written tests. It’s a bit scary considering people with “parking lot certificates” can jump on 100+ horses as long as they have the funds.

I’ve been riding for about 5 months and my first bike is a 650 V-Strom. It’s not all about the cc in my opinion it’s all about what you decide on doing with it. You want to tour the country? Get something comfortable. You want to go off road? Get a dual sport. You want to play stupid games? Get a turbo-busa. You can definitely get a 600cc as a first bike though, it’s all about how you like to ride

Couldn't disagree more. 600s are great even for beginners. Just keep in mind that a super sport bike might be really uncomfortable on the road, especially on longer rides. Of course they are not slow, mine tops out at 140 mph (allegedly). I never tried reaching that kind of speed and probably never will, I can not imagine ever being in that much of a hurry. ;-) Remember: an idiot will always find a way to kill himself on any motorcycle, starting on a low powered bike will not prevent that.

It's still better to fully get to know your bike when you can go through all your gears and fully twist the throttle. Although it can be done it's just much easier on the new rider to start small and work their way up.

I got an 08 350z (last 2 years 07-08 had the most power) in manual with a broken traction control system when I was 16 or 17. The car is near, if not, the top of insurance company risk list for young males. Fast forwards to 21 and I'm still driving the car w/ a fixed race seat, harness, and other go fast focused parts as my only car with 0 tickets and 0 accidents. Not a 600 and not as fast, but basically the same idea in the car world. I've taken the car to 140 (top spd is 150) but only after driving it for 3+ years. I think people with real respect for "bad idea" vehicles should go ahead and get them if they want.

My first bike was a 2004 Kawasaki ZX-6R. Recently I got a 2019 Kawasaki 650. The 650 by far a hell of a lot more fun in traffic with its relaxed riding position. Did not miss the power of the 6R because that's not what I enjoyed about riding.
