California has opened the Weingart Tower, a 19-story, $165 million high-rise in Skid Row, providing 278 fully furnished studio apartments for the homeless. Each apartment costs $600,000. Will this be a permanent solution to homelessness?

To my own research In USA, individuals living in cars due to partial homelessness result from a complex interplay of factors. High housing costs relative to income, stagnant wages, and income inequality drive this issue. Job loss, weak social support, medical expenses, evictions, and lack of affordable housing also contribute, while systemic problems and inadequate policies further perpetuate the phenomenon.

Considering the present situation, diversifying by shifting investments from real estate to financial markets or gold is recommended, despite potential future home price drops. Given prevailing mortgage rates and economic uncertainty, this move is prudent, particularly due to stricter mortgage regulations. Seeking advice from a knowledgeable independent financial advisor is advisable for those seeking guidance.

There is that, but that's California policies. They have very high taxes. It's not a state everyone can live in on a lower income. I've known that for years. People maybe need to move out of CA. There are shelters for people who can't afford things, as long as you're not doing drugs, etc. Local counties have resources available and you can look things up at the library for free.

You’re making an assumption and that’s what they want everyone to sit there and do. These developments are structured under a different assistance program whereby a tenant can pay 30, 40, or 50%. There are many programs under the umbrella of Section 8, not just one. I had a friend living in “affordable housing” and her unit was 50%. That made her still responsible for a monthly portion of over $900 on a fixed income. Why would the money go back? It goes to the landlord, the owner or owners of the building. Every penny.

A few years ago I worked on a section 8 housing with balconies most with the views of the flatirons( the Rockies). On the property we also built a retail slab that was leased to a convenience and a liquor store. They could have sold this property and it would have paid for all of the buildings. Also well over half were not build ADA compliant!

In the 90’s our corrupt government, nationwide, decided to tear down most of the housing projects and instead pay rents (section 8), bringing millions of renters into the rental market- one of many reasons housing is out of reach for a growing number of Americans, all the reasons created by government- The housing projects were well planned, they were near schools, bus lines, walking distance from industrial areas with work, they had health clinics/hospitals nearby, parks and recreation centers- But they were planned & built during a time when our government was semi decent, semi honest and sorta wanted to fix things, then the 90’s brought us what has become the most corrupt, most disconnected, most self serving government that even surpassed the corruption of the late 1800’s/early 1900’s that brought us the Great Depression and wars- This tearing down housing projects, turning them into lofts for the yuppies then building multi billion $ ‘solutions’ for the ‘unhoused’, anyone can see are failures is symbolic of our times

$600,000 homes (units)? Looks like they will be living better than most of taxpayers who are forced to pay for it. Might be interesting to learn which company is getting paid that $600k per unit and what their political connections are.

$166M TDC means at least $16M developer fee. Not to mention contractor profit and attorney fees since it took three years to get done. Private and CRA investors in probably LIHTC, TIF and a host of public dollars. The question is was the land already public owned, if not, most of that went to acquisition fees and someone got broke off! I get building to house homeless, but that sure has a market rate feel to it.

My downtown has the same apartments and it helped a little for the homeless who want to stay in the apartments but they like to cross the light without waiting for there turn. They need cops to patrol that area constantly so that the homeless are kept on check. Because it’s not safe and they are to high to realize

Pat- please present your plan !! What is your solution !! Here is one. California is so large, it still has the second-highest number of vacant homes - about 8.7% according to the report, or around 1.2 million empty homes. Deed these homes to the homeless after they put in 2 years at 8 hours per day labor under the supervision of construction contactors !! The State can donate the basic building materials. They must work labor to qualify !! No free lunch !!
