60103 "Flying Scotsman" The Salisbury Express 21st June 2023

Wednesday 21st June saw Flying Scotsman haul the Salisbury Express from London Paddington to Salisbury.
Rather than the usual route of heading down the South Western mainline, the tour ran down the Berks & Hants route from Reading to Westbury & then onto Salisbury.
The footage starts on the return journey from Salisbury & lasts until the return to London Paddington. Unfortunately, due to some idiot, the footage is slightly faded from around Mortimer back to Paddington as you will see, thankfully no damage was caused to the engine or my camera.

Brilliant run and thoroughly enjoyed the scenic views and even the foul deed committed by some idiotic 'twat' from a bridge between Basingstoke and Reading didn't dampen my viewing.

Oh… well, if it was someone’s ashes……. who ever scattered them over the flying Scotsman…. Obviously didn’t know there was going to be a camera placed on the front of the train. If that’s the case… i take back what i commented earlier. Thanks.

A truly beautiful engine but please restore her back to her original number 4472 and give her back the apple green livery. Because that is her original garb!!!!!!!

What an absolutely delightful video! Thank you so much for sharing! Such a shame about the imbecile who dropped something from atop the bridge! I'm assuming it was done deliberately, so if it was - shame on them! But despite that, the view is still rather clear, and it's still a great video! 😊🚂

Fabulous video, aboard such a fabulous, iconic, beautiful steam locomotive, but WHY oh WHY does she have to carry those ghastly German-style (of ALL things), smoke deflectors?? YUK! I think that, if Sir Nigel could see his so-perfectly designed and proportioned masterpiece disfigured in this way, he wouldn't know whether to laugh or cry. I feel that it's comparable to some "bright" spark taking an A4, and chopping off everything around the smokebox, replacing it all with right-angled designs/box shapes, and proclaiming that it then looked perfect. Hmmmmmm. 75 m.p.h.?? 😉

Hi Roger, Thanks for the kind comment. The smoke deflectors are required to assist with the crews vision for keeping a look out & signals. This was how Scotsman looked back in the days of its BR reign so it’s not completely unauthentic, even more so as it has its double chimney.

Any idea of what speeds The Flying Scotsman achieved? She seemed to be really shifting along at times. Thank you for a fine video.

Scotsman is allowed to run up to 75mph so no more than that.

Hi David, Thank you for the kind comment. The channel has grown considerably since I’ve started doing these videos as I think it provides something very different. I’m very lucky to be in the position to do this with Flying Scotsman & also the Black 5’s so whenever the opportunity arises I try to capture what I can. As to getting the channel out there, I guess it’s just down to people sharing the link & the videos getting searched on KZfaq? Any hints & tips gratefully received though lol!

How Do you Do all this And if Someone wanted a Cab Ride on the Main Line with a Steam Loco Who do i Ask?

Hi LazerJet, I’ve been involved with mainline support crew duties for nearly 20 years now & had a railway background through my family so I’ve been lucky in a sense to be able to carry the tradition on. Unfortunately riding on an engine on the mainline isn’t an easy task as you need a PTS certificate which allows cab access & a sponsor for the PTS itself. The PTS is also renewed every 2/3 years too.

Absolutely silverwing & it wasn't until I saw the comment about it being someone's ashes that it really hit home that it could have been that. It was just a huge shock to see that happen.

It's a pity more don't seem to notice this! While the atmosphere contains just 0.041% CO2, man's contribution to the overall flux is less than about 4%. In other words, 96%+ comes from natural processes, such as decaying vegetation, animal life, volcanic activity etc. As a greenhouse gas, CO2 accounts for about 3% of the total effect, 97% or so being due to clouds and water vapour. But you can't tax clouds or the sun...
