6011 welding rods are almost like 6010 rods except they are designed to be used with either DC or AC welders. Students often learn how to weld using 6011 rods and that provides an opportunity to use AC and DC polarity and the effect polarity has on the arc.

it wont affect penetration but you might get porosity. And on thick steel or high strength steel, cracks can form from hydrogen being diffused into the metal. thats why 7018 and 7016 are classified as low hydrogen and need to be stored in a rod oven or new and sealed in a container. Hydrogen molecules are tiny and can find their way into steel microstructure and cause cracks.

I was explained that dig could be easily understood by comparing it to a twist garden nozzle. When you twist left the spray gets wider with less force to the right uh our stream gets tighter and digs deeper. It has helped me and hopefully it helps others.

Wow Jody, You make it look so easy. I can't wait for the bike frame vid. That's exactly what I'm looking to do with my welder. Maybe a pull behind trailer too. I have the 140ST but don't have the tig setup for it yet. Gonna see if I'm able to do this project using stick? Not as pretty I'm sure but as long as it'll work.

Jody, Thanks for all the tips! Question: I need to repair some bullet holes in a 1/2" plate steel back stop, at a rifle and pistol gun club. The plate steel is impregnated with lead, zinc, brass, and copper, from the bullets. Grinding the base metal, the lead and zinc (mostly) remain in/on the plate steel. We have been using 6010 rods, but the welds are poor, and it takes forever to make a pass. Any ideas, filler metal suggestions? Thank you for all your instructional videos and comments.

Hi there, First of all I find your videos very interesting and educative! About the 7016 and 7018 which are low hydrogen electrodes hence they have to be preheated in an oven. I do not have this facility currently. If I don't pre-heat them will the penetration be effected? I never had the opportunity to test it out my self. Thanks for your videos!

ive filled up like 3 or 4 practice plates... i make the same stupid errors every time my root is awesome but when i get to the cover it gets wavy also im welding using a tombstone so heat may be off but its pretty hot. they tell me its incomplete im trying to practice using the run off more (starting on the backing bar) its hard because the backing bar tends to get perosity on it and the rod will stick so i tended to start in the test plate

You will fine if you are not welding to code. If you are welding to a code like D.1.1 or D.1.5 you will need to use rods that are fresh from a newly opened container and store the unused portion in an oven OR use rods that have been heated in an oven. The stay times vary some rods are good for 4 hours in ambient air and other are good for up to 8.

Are you using 1/8th wire? 110 seems pretty cold even if you are running stringers. I do my overhead at 120-130 for the purposes of the unlimited test. My vertical is about 118-120ish. My suggestion would be to try and up your heat a bit. Best of luck bro.

Is 125 too hot for 1/8 6011? I took a weld test for a barge company today and the weldor had the machine cranked to 125 for the 6011 doing vertical and overhead. Needless to say it didn’t look very well and the rod was just eating into the metal

@smalltownplaya712
@smalltownplaya712 10 жыл бұрын
basically the same as this " dig " function , more force the more agressive the arc. It is best to not use the arc control when practicing for test's as some jobsites have welders without any kind of setting. Good luck .

This was great. In class we are using 5/32 6010 for vertical inside corner welds. My beads travel speed and arc length are good until about an inch from the top. I start to get a lot of arc blow and when I adjust my rod angle it either blows out the top or mounds underneath. I've tried shortening the arc length and increasing the travel speed but it still looks pretty sloppy. Even angling the rod downwards towards the top doesn't help. Any suggestions???

Do you think a higher dig setting would affect the duty cycle of a lower amperage machine?
@Dread_Naught_But_The_Dark
@Dread_Naught_But_The_Dark 7 жыл бұрын
I have a very limited knowledge of welding machines and their functions but i can almost guarantee from my knowledge of electricity that it would (or should) lower the duty cycle. any increase in amperage such as from a dig function would increase the total power (in watts) being pushed through the machine. (compared to a machine without a dig function). This would ideally increase the temperature of the circuitry and the transformer more quickly under working load and should be used more sparingly than regular welding settings.

I freaking suck at vertical. I can't figure it out to save my life. My horizontal T-joint was perfect according to the teacher, but now that I am doing vertical it is just impossible for me. I get lots of globbed up parts no matter how fast my travel speed is or my amperage. My teacher told me to travel much faster than you are traveling in the video and to not pause at all, just up and down quickly up the metal. I've tried everything I know to try and just cannot get it. Please do a more in depth video showing how to stack beads on vertical 6010.

I don't think my small inverter machine like 6010 or 6011. 6010's do nothing but stick / won't light and the 6011's stick alot too, but run ok IF i can manage to get one to light. And forget about using a half burned rod. Even grinding the tip clean, they won't light. 6013's always run fine tho.

I'd hate to go to a school that makes you use 6011 rods. They stick too much on ordinary AC welders. 7014 rods are much nicer to use on mild steel which is the metal pretty much what an average shop uses.
