I believe this song is about a brother and sister who are the same age, who used to sleep in the same bed together because of, well they hadn't hit puberty yet, and they where siblings. But then, the girl starts to go through puberty, and therefore the parents separate them. The children are sad about this, because they have slept together for years and are at unease not being with each other, innocent love. (They have not had sex with each other before, they were just used to sleeping in the same bed). Then, one night the boy is saying goodnight to his sister and they both can't take it so the boy sleeps with his sister. Now this is where there are 2 different theories from me. 1. (Not innocent one)-When the line states at 2:50 her eyes are hinting at something different-a lustful look FOR sex. Then after that, without their parents knowing, they have incest from then on when they sleep with each other, and you can read the rest of the lyrics from that lens. Eventually, Len might've gone through puberty, and then they actually had sex from then on. 2. (Innocent one)-Instead of being sexual at 2:50, it could be that her eyes changed from sad to happy, and Len comforted Rin from then on by sleeping with her. Their parents don't know they're sleeping with each other, but it's not sexual. Len eventually goes through puberty, and from then on, he can't say that this is innocent in people's eyes, even though it is. They don't tell their parents because they fear that they'll be disappointed or angry. So, I believe that this song is about a pair of twins who don't want to grow up. Okay, okay, slow down everyone. The main idea of this song is to emphasize that as children grow older, it's expected that male-female siblings will separate more as they mature physically. It's expected to consider being open with each other to become more limited as they grow older. I mean, when most siblings reach a certain age they tend to want more privacy or to think it's "weird" sharing certain things, e.g. time spent alone with each other or physical affection. This song is more about the twins mourning that loss of perceived innocence and of the intimacy shared between siblings, esp those of the exact same age but different gender, but being aware of the stigma that surrounds them should they continue to act the same way that they always have.

I get that this is supposed to be about siblings growing up and not understanding why they can't do things like kissing each other's cheek or sleep in the same bed anymore, but the lyrics don't really help convince you it's supposed to be wholesome...

The way I see Adolescence is not Incest. It's something completely different. Yes, it depends on the song whether Rin and Len are Twins, Lovers, or just simple Mirror Images. In Adolescence, they're Twins. But, I state again, this song is not incest. This song is about twins who are joined at the hip. They've always been together, ever since they were born. When they were young, it was cute how the two would care for each other. Spending time together, holding each other in sleep, brushing each other's hair. But, as they grow older, and, as Rin put it in the song, "The promise that we made to always dance together is turned into a lie by my growing bosom," as the two start to grow and develop, society starts to see it as weird and gross instead of cute. Society, even their parents, start to try and push the two away from each other without telling the two anything, making the twins wondering what they did wrong and wondering what's going on. As an older Vocaloid fan (I’ve been around for almost ten years now wow) this comment section is wild to me, cuz like... back in the day, we just accepted that this song was about incest and didn’t really think anything of it lmao. That animated PV especially made it clear. As time goes on, I’m seeing fandoms become more and more focused on what is okay in real life, and either avoid or explain away things that would be wrong if real people did them. It’s kinda weird, since fiction has always been a way to explore topics you can’t explore in real life. But now you see Star Wars fans bashing people who like Kylo Ren, or vocaloid fans trying desperately to make Adolescence non romantic. When, honestly? It doesn’t matter. These aren’t real people. They’re characters. Nobody is getting hurt. Of course we know what would and would not be okay irl, but that doesn’t mean our fiction has to directly correlate with it. This is just a fun little song song by computer programs. It’s not that deep.
