I just rewatched the movie DS starred in, in MASH. As an Operating Room RN, for 15 of my 30 years, as a nurse, it was a very emotional movie to watch. Also, my grandpa’s doctor served in Korea as well. I don’t believe we will ever know the caliber of actors that were in that movie, with the exception of Alan Alda. I will ALWAYS LOVE the movie and series MASH, especially as an OR Nurse. May you RIP Donald Sutherland and I wish your family peace and condolences during this time of loss.

I began to realize about 30 years ago the actors and actresses we watched growing up in the 60s, 70s, 80s and thru today have passed on. Leaving an empty space in our hearts. Never occurred to me the loss happens with each generation. Being 65 and have seen the shows and movies with great performers and even the music we listened to, we are a special generation of folks. As we age we tend to reflect on the people and events that touched our lives. I cherish the days gone by even more these days knowing this nation is so much more divided.

Donald Sutherland. I absolutely loved this man. He is sweet and funny as hell and just a glorious beautiful soul. And it all shines through in his work. He was one of the all time greatest actors. A beautiful man. And human. Inside and out. I do not know how he could think of himself as ugly or even unattractive. He was beautiful through and through. And excessively gifted and talented. Talent and heart and beauty that he gifted to the world in his admirable life and work. I love every character he ever portrayed. There is not a single flaw in any of the portrayals of all the flawed human beings he endeavored to give us in his films. Though I love everyone of them, my all time favorite is Calvin Jarrett in Ordinary People. Both he and Mary Tyler Moore were perfect and profound in that film. Thank you, Donald Sutherland. Thank you from my heart. For all the joy you gave me and so many others in this world sharing your gifts of talent and beauty with us in your timeless work. "Rest in peace child of the universe. What I saw is his humility and humanity. He was so natural in his movie roles that you were immersed in his character like it was real. So when he cried watching his character in Don't Look Back I realized that he BECAME his character. Maybe thats why he had to walk away and never see one of his completed films, it was just too overwhelming and exhausting for him. He touched your heart because he played fron the heart in his movie characters. In the movie industry he was one of the greats.

He had the choice of being paid $35,000 or 2% of the gross for that role. Thinking the movie would not do well, he took the cash. The movie went on to gross 141 million. He took that role as a favor to his friend, director John Landis, because the studio insisted a "star" be in the cast.

My memorable but fleeting moment with The Don was when he walked right past my table at a cafe across the road from the Notre Dame when I was visiting in 2008. Oooooofffff those eyes

He was magnificent, it’s hard to have a favorite role, but 1981’s Eye Of The Needle, was a masterpiece, we rewatched it last night, fantastic performance!!!! And he was not an ugly man, I had a huge crush on him!!!

Well deserved lifetime achievement award. Yes people like Mr Sutherland are actors and protray people. But they are humans to and most do there job well. Us as watchers grow and watch these characters. Some that we even wish and want to be like those characters. He may have played alot of bad guys but thats what he was good at. THank you 60 minutes for giving him a tribute.

What a range of roles! Talent that refused type-casting. Even in “bad B-movies,” Sutherland was always “A+.”
