I like building planes. When I need a special profile or something, I make a plane for it. Usually I use a piece of beech fire wood and a piece of highspeed steel for the blade. It´s fun, the plane does it´s job and it will come in handy in the future.

These planes really are at antique stores, flea markets, and swap meets all over the Midwest states. However, the prices are getting outrageous. I spend a lot of time traveling to the shows and meets and see the same sellers month after month hundreds of miles apart and they are not moving goods I then offer them 20 to 30% less and remind them that they had this plane in inventory for over a year. Guess what? They sell for 30% less. Don’t be afraid to make a reasonable offer. But also do your research so you are making a reasonable offer. Hit that subscribe button too, Mr Blackburn is a national treasure that must be preserved! Thank you Mr B!

You know, Graham, I've found a coffin smoothing plane here in Brazil. They were asking for 600 reais, around 120 dollars. 😬 So, I'm thinking about making some, starting from those made with a chisel! So, I'm definitely going to look for dimensions and so on. 😊 Anyway, thanks for all the info! Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

Your ship planes are beautiful!! I have a coffin plane, several moulding planes, a Stanley 78 double rebate plane in new condition (with two blades!), a homemade mini-plane that’s about 3” long with a 1/8” wide cutter (not really an iron), several block planes … but my two favorite planes are my Dad’s Stanley 5, and his Dad’s Stanley 28! All of these planes are old - especially the moulding planes. Some of them were pretty beat up when I got them (one blade looked as if someone hit a nail … and just kept planning over that nail!), but I worked on them and got them all revived and back in working order. I love the sound of a plane singing through a piece of wood!

Mr. Blackburn, new subscriber here. I had never heard of you or your channel until this video was on my google today. You were immediately one of my heroes when I saw that incredible shelf of molding (moulding? 😁) planes behind you! I’m only an occasional woodworker, rude shelves and the like, never anything too fancy. But I inherited a couple of old tools from my Granddad. He was not a woodworker or carpenter, but a Missouri farmer through a big part of the last century. I’m sure you know that farmers through the ages have, by necessity, been jacks-of-all-trades. Since then I’ve picked up a few other tools here and there. Gradually I’ve put a few of them in working order, just for the pleasure of learning the way centuries of woodworkers accomplished so much before electricity and complicated power equipment. Thank you for your contributions to this generation’s appreciation of how woodworkers did amazing things in the past!

I have a plane that is quite similar to the extra long v-grooving plane. Here in France theses were sold as planes for making dovetailed table slides (you would make a groove and then do the dovetail part with the plane). Of course i guess it can be used for a wide array of odd jobs 🙂

Good videos. I like the relatively short descriptions of the tools, but it leads to many other questions. ie: Why is the length of a jointer plane important vs the smoothing plane? A. The length of the jointer plane shaves the high points of the stock and results in a flatter surface. The smoothing plane is too short to create a flat surface. It just makes things feel nice. Rippled, but nice. I'm sure this is explained in your books, but a little of this insight and reasoning in the videos would be great.
