The fact that many DCC decoder functions are assigned to different buttons by different manufacturers can create a lot of confusion for owners and operators. However you have the option to remap the button assignments for each function using a process called function mapping or remapping. It also pays to do some advance planning for this process so as to avoid potential conflicts and differences among throttles. In this video I'll show you how to do that using the free DecoderPro program. I'll also give you some tips on how to go about coming up with a common set of function assignments for this process.

Some really useful uploads recently Larry, thanks. I would find it really helpful if you could upload a demonstration of your post about changing sounds on ESU decoders using the Loksound software,( but without the Lokprogrammer) and then making the actual changes using Decoder Pro. Hopefully I wouldn't be the only one who would find it useful!

It’s coming, I already have the v. 5 decoders and will be doing articles for MR on the topic with videos planned for concurrent release. Thanks for the suggestion-Larry

Thanks! nice video. I was able to finally set my prime mover options. It was always starting up once power was applied to tracks. What a pain have noise all over :) Now I can start it when I need it

Yes, finding the right CV setting can be difficult since manufacturers don’t always use the same one. Be aware that different decoders may do it different ways too.

It would be nice to see other decoders such as Digitrax not just TSU2.

Thanks Larry. I have Tsunami 2's and remapped functions manually on the throttle (not through the JMRI software). For some of my locos, I cannot remap F11 once I've remapped it once. I can remap F11 multiple times just fine on others. Have you experienced this? I will try again using the JMRI software.

I just had a similar issue this week and resolved it with a CV8 reset. After that I was able to remap functions as I desired.

@@TheDCCGuy Thanks. I solved it by reviewing the "Legacy Function Map" tab. There were several items checked for F11. As you mention in the video, this takes priority over any settings in the "Function Map" tab. Once I unchecked the items and wrote to the decoder, I could modify F11 . I would have never known this without DecoderPro and your helpful tip. Thanks for the video.

Larry, excellent video on using decoder pro to make sound function changes. I learned a lot. Can you tell me why you choose Digitrax for DCC system? Thanks for sharing. Ken

I have been using Digitrax since they first started in 1994. They sent me one of their first sets for a review in Model Railroading magazine and I stuck with them ever since. I also have owned System One, NCE, Lenz, Bachmann, MRC, and Atlas systems for reviews but have kept Digitrax as my main system. I still have all the Digitrax equipment I picked up over the last 25 years and with minor exceptions it still works and I have only had to send one throttle back for repairs in that time. The big difference compared to most of the others is the expandability of their systems-everything is compatible so you can start with a beginner set and add to it as needed. You don’t have to start all over when you decide you need more capacity, etc. NCE is pretty good to but they got into the game too late for me to go with them.

Thanks for the great info. It helps me out. I have an MRC, but am not pleased and am thinking of changing to Digitrax. This helped a lot. Ken

@Mr Allen, I did not like the single knob to control the engines, having to constantly recall and search for the engine I wanted to control. I also did not like the feel of the controller in my hand. To me personally some of the programming was a bit trying. MRC does make a good system but was just not for me. Thank you for asking.

Can I use either the digitrax programmer or the ESU programmer to programme any make of decoder.
@TheDCCGuy
@TheDCCGuy 3 жыл бұрын
The Digitrax PR4 can be used with any type decoder. However as far as I have been able to ascertain the ESU programmer can only be used with their decoders. That said, because it is optimized for use with their LokProgram and their decoders it is much faster than other methods.

Hey, so I sent my Atlas S2 loco (n scale) back to train world for an exchange because it was sputtering and would no matter where it was on the track, even brand new track with feeders it did this. I got the new one Last week and it does the same thing, just sputters around the track. Train world has told me to the decoder May need to be set to run more efficiently, I may need to adjust the cvs which I know little about. Do you know what cvs they’re talking about? I can switch horns and such but I don’t know how it would stop it from sputtering. Sorry for the long comment, you seem to know a lot about this stuff.

The decoder should have been optimized for the locomotive by the manufacturer. Since I have no idea which decoder was installed in that loco it makes it a little hard from me to comment. However, Atlas should have a tech sheet on their website on programming the decoder so I suggest you contact their customer support people. Now let me share my experience like this. A couple of years ago I bought a small steam loco with a LokSound decoder in it. Unfortunately the manufacturer had switched motors after the first run and as a result the thing ran horribly. I tried all kinds of custom CV settings and autocalibration to no avail. I finally replaced it with a SoundTraxx decoder that worked well with the motor. More recently Rapido had a batch of models that kept burning up motors, with LokSound decoders. They finally came up with some CV reprogramming changes that fixed the issue but not before they had to replace a bunch of motors and reprogram everything in their warehouse. So I bet this is the kind of issue you are seeing. And only the folks at Atlas will know. I’m sorry I can’t can’t offer a more specific answer but this is the first I have heard of this particular problem but I bet Atlas has heard from a lot of customers in your situation-good luck.

Thank you Larry, I’m glad you have an experience like mine! I will check the Atlas website for a table/chart on programming the CV values, I am a rookie when it comes to this stuff, I have 3 other Atlas locos and they all worked flawlessly out of the box. Thank you for your time and letting me know that I’m probably not the only one with this issue. Take care!
