About Episode 123: Waking up at the border was as awkward as you might think, but that is one of the best things about RVing! Need to sleep? Pullover. We visited Haines for two reasons. We heard the bears and eagles were abundant, even more than most of Alaska and it gave us an opportunity to take the Marine Highway and ferry to Skagway Alaska. Considering all the miles we drove, we knew we were not up for an “out and back” and the ferry makes Tok to Haines to Skagway a more direct shot to the Cassiar Highway. Here’s a quick tip on the Marine Highway. Anything over 30’ you need to call. So don’t even waste your time trying to figure out their unacquainted website. All the staff from the phones to the crew are very helpful and polite.

We were at that exact spot in Haines back in August. Sadly we didn’t see cub city. But the eagles were awesome, as the were the views! This is the only KZfaq show we watch as a family.

I was so excited to see a new Video! I was on that same road going north from Haines. Thank you for all the beautiful footage! We had our 3/4 ton Ford flatbed with a Lincoln Welding Machine. Stored it in Fairbanks, then on a plane to Prudhoe Bay. 12 weeks of pipelining for Conoco. Then ended up living north of Soldotna in Nikiski. 4 years of beautiful Alaska! I remember our Ferry voyage on the Columbia out of Bellingham. Sorry for the story, just so excited to watch where we were. Long time ago. 28 years ago. Also, I don’t have cable so this is like my best Show! (Oh My Gosh! It’s the Colombia!) I am so glad your on that one we were! I had forgotten so much, no cell phones in 1990 to take lots of pictures. We had a 35mm Film. I can’t find those photos. Thank you SO much for sharing!

Had to pause mid-video, and let ya'all know how much I appreciate this type of video! It really give's us insight into what you have to do in term's of searching for enough internet spd., then editing/downloading just ONE video! If I ever get to travel in my TT, (other than just random camping @ nearby St Lake's/Parks), I wouldn't even consider making video's for a youtube channel! Thanks. The channel really adds to our travel and overall we get more out of it, but it doesn't come easy. We work 60-80 per week, which many won't believe. For right now, KYD is an eat, sleep breath thing.

At Skagway in May 2023, we witnessed a camper and pickup truck way over 62 ft. long try to load into the MV Leconte, a smaller ferry, six times before the ferry personnel told the driver to give it up. The owners had to wait three more days in Skagway until the much larger MV Columbia arrived. By the way, I was told by a charter airplane pilot from Haines that Haines had a hippie problem and Skagway had a jewelry store problem. Ha!

we had a good time when we were in Skagway, as much of a good time as you can on 9/11/2001. That's right, that day. We where still able to take the train up the Mountain into Canada, they had not yet mandated the Passport reentry, driver's licenses was acceptable. Hope you enjoyed Skagway

Hope that crowd was far enough away from the bears and their cubs. I was lucky to have travelled to the Yukon and Alaska 5 times as a tour bus driver from Ontario. We travelled by ferry from Prince Rupert BC. To Skagway. Hanes was always at least an hour as RV’ers that couldn’t backup tried to maneuver to the end of the ferry and then off. Looks like you guys had no problems with that maneuver. Happy travels

My mom and dad taught me if you get pulled over or if you are the the border same rules apply. All windows open and interior lights on Sunglasses, hats and radio off. Cell phone off/down. 4 way flashers and turn car off (if you're pulled over) No smoking, eating or gum. Don't reach/open anything without asking first. Hands on the wheel the entire time. No one talks, except when spoken to and end every sentence end with sir or mam. Have all receipts in hand at customs with final, exact tally. Example $172.82 not $170 or about 150 bucks. No jokes. Never gotten a ticket 😉, never been pulled over to secondary, never had to pay any duty at customs.

That is the same as the border between British Columbia and Washington State. There are I think 5 or 6 crossings and the 2 main ones closest to the coast are open 24/7 but there is one a bit inland just north of Lynden Washington that is closed from midnight to 8 a.m.

Really great video guys. I know you've done some updates to how your equipment is holding up, but would love to see a dedicated video on how everything is holding up, truck, RV, mods, solar, hitch, what's working and what maybe not so much now that you've been in Alaska for some months now. Including things you might do differently.
